Mearuring the orientation and roation rate of 3D printed particles in turbulence
The orientation distribution and rotations of anisotropic particles in turbulent flows play a key role in many applications ranging from icy clouds to papermaking and drag reduction in pipe flow. However, experimental access to time-resolved orientations of anisotropic particles has not been easy to achieve. The use of 3D printing opens up the possibility to fabricate a wide range of particle shapes with smallest dimension down to 300 μm. So far, we have printed rods, crosses, jacks, triads, tetrads and helical particle shapes. We extract particle orientations from stereoscopic video images using a method of least squares optimization in Euler angle space. We find that in turbulence, the orientation and rotation-rate of many particles can be understood using a simple picture of alignment of both the vorticity and a long axis of the particle with the Lagrangian stretching direction of the flow

The Challenges Of Politicizing Justice And The Anthropology Of Law [desafios Da Politização Da Justiça E A Antropologia Do Direito]
The article discusses the challenges faced by an anthropology of law that focuses on western modern societies and on the analysis of the justice system in its relation to issues such as violence against women and violence against the elderly. Building on the debates within the legal-feminist theories, the following subjects are explored: (1) the relationship between universalism and different forms of particularism, (2) the opposition between judicialization of social relations and the politicization of justice, (3) new forms of control that characterize contemporary societies. The author points out the limitations and fallacies of the concept of culture in the understanding of contemporary legal and political dilemmas.532475492Corrêa, M., (1983) Morte Em Família: Representações Jurídicas E Papéis Sexuais, , Rio de Janeiro, GraalCorrêa, M., (1981) Os Crimes Da Paixão, , São Paulo, Editora BrasilienseDebert, G.G., A antropologia e os novos desafios nos estudos de cultura e política (1997) Revista Política E Trabalho, (13)Debert, G.G., Beraldo de Oliveira, M., Os modelos conciliatórios de solução de conflitos e a violência doméstica (2007) Cadernos Pagu, (29)Debert, G.G., Gregori, F., As delegacias especiais de polícia e o projeto gênero e cidadania (2002) Gênero E Cidadania, , in CORRÊA, M. Section one presents the results of associations found between environmental factors and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in a prospective cohort study, Section 2 presents genetic associations and interactions found between AMD risk genes and environmental risk factors from a case-control study nested in the cohort.
Section One
Aim: To investigate associations between environmental factors and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study (MCCS).
Material & Methods: Participants included 21 287 men and women, who were aged 40–69 years at baseline (1990–1994 (48 to 86 years at follow up). Participant's body compositions were measured and alcohol and nutrient intakes were estimated from a food frequency questionnaire at baseline in 1990-94. At follow up from 2003-2007, digital macula photographs of both eyes were taken and evaluated for signs of early and late AMD.
Section Two
Aim: Associations between genotype and AMD were assessed using a nested case-control study (2,287 cases, 2,287 controls individually matched on age, sex and country-of-origin), selected from the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study. Statistical interactions between selected environmental and genetic risk factors were evaluated
Global vulnerability to near-Earth object impact
A clear appreciation of the consequences resulting from an asteroid impact is required in order to understand the near Earth object (NEO) hazard. Three main processes require modelling to analyse the entire impact event. These are the atmospheric entry phase, land impact events and ocean impact events. A range of impact generated effects (IGEs) are produced by different impact scenarios. It is these IGEs that present the threat to human populations world wide, and the infrastructure they utilise. A software system for analysing the NEO threat has been developed, entitled NEOimpactor, to examine the social and economic consequences from land and ocean impacts. Existing mathematical models for the three principal impact processes have been integrated into one complete system, which has the capability to model the various effects of a terrestrial asteroid impact and, critically, predict the consequences for the global population and infrastructure. Analysis of multiple impact simulations provides a robust method for the provision of an integrated, global vulnerability assessment of the NEO hazard. The primary graphical outputs from NEOimpactor are in the form of ‘relative consequence’ maps, and these have been designed to be comprehensible to a non-specialist audience. By the use of a series of multiple-impact simulations, the system has identified the five countries most at risk from the impact hazard, as well as indicating the various factors influencing vulnerability
