Truth, purification and power: Foucault's genealogy of purity and impurity in and after The Will to Know lectures

    No full text
Foucault’s 1970–71 lectures at the Collège de France, The Will to Know, highlight the significance of themes of purity and impurity in Western thought. Reflecting on these themes coincided with the emergence of Foucault’s theory of power. This article presents the first analysis of Foucault’s investigation of purity and impurity in The Will to Know lectures, identifying the distinctive theory Foucault offers of purity as a discursive apparatus addressing correspondence between the subject and the truth through the image of relative integrity or mixture. It then traces Foucault’s subsequent reflections on these themes in his later writings on disciplinary power. The implications of Foucault’s position are considered; the article will close by putting Foucault’s ideas in dialogue with those of Kristeva, and in considering the role that purity and impurity may play in resistance

[English] The concept of globalization is considered quite modern but as the author of this book, it is not. The Savage and Modern Self: North American Indians in Eighteenth-Century British Literature and Culture

    No full text
The Savage and Modern Self examines the representations of North American "Indians" in novels, poetry, plays, and material culture from eighteenth-century Britain. Author Robbie Richardson argues that depictions of "Indians" in British literature were used to critique and articulate evolving ideas about consumerism, colonialism, "Britishness," and, ultimately, the "modern self" over the course of the century. Considering the ways in which British writers represented contact between Britons and "Indians," both at home and abroad, the author shows how these sites of contact moved from a self-affirmation of British authority earlier in the century, to a mutual corruption, to a desire to appropriate perceived traits of "Indianess." Looking at texts exclusively produced in Britain, The Savage and Modern Self reveals that "the modern" finds definition through imagined scenes of cultural contact. By the end of the century, Richardson concludes, the hybrid Indian-Brition emerging in literature and visual culture exemplifies a form of modern, British masculinity

The annual publication of the students of Gilbert Paterson Middle School, Lethbridge, Alberta. (Volume. 2001-02)pdf1^'ST^ Administrators’Message It is with great pride that we, the administration team at Gilbert Paterson Community School, have served you over the past year. At times the 2001-02 school year has been difficult and at times exciting. But together we have grown as a community to become caring, concerned and compassionate citizens. The events of September 11, 2001 brought a sudden realization that we in Lethbridge do not live in isolation from the rest of the world. In spite of this unrest and uncertainty, there has never been a more favourable time in this great nation of ours. Young Canadians have educational and lifelong opportunities abound. The choices presented can be mind-boggling, as technology has created a limitless boundary to our imagination. Yet, it is reality, which forces us to become strong citizens. Emerson said, “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself’. Young Canadians like yourselves must take the opportunities and advantages you have to work hard and make Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada and the World a community of caring, concerned and compassionate citizens just as you have done at Paterson. Published in Canada Printed in USA 2001 On August 22 & 23, 2001, 22 students and 16 teachers participated in a Leadership Retreat at Gilbert Paterson Community They painted, ate, played games, ate, designed logos, ate, had a fashion show, ate, played ninjas, and got to know each other really well. The Ninjas in the Dark game got pretty crazy according to the stories the next morning. But they sure learned how to have fun and how to be good leaders for the years to come! 2 Leadership Retreat- August 2001 3 Welcome to Grade Nine To kick-off their return to school and their last year at GPCS, the grade 9s were treated to a pancake breakfast cooked and served by the teachers. With Mr. Philpott, Mr. Usman, Mr. Scott and Mr. Smith to pour and flip, what could possibly go wrong? 4 Welcome Back Breakfast 5 Turkey Trot 2001 On October 5, 2001 ,the Grade 8 Leadership class lead students at GPCS in a TURKEY TROT. Both the elementary and middle level students participated in the event that morning. Students were to partner up and then estimate the time it would take them to circle the school yard TWICE. The person(s) who walked, ran, skipped or whatever closest to their estimated time won— YOU GUESSED IT-- a turkey for 6 Halloween 2001 J. M 7 Outdoor Ed 8 Writing on Stone October 10-12,2001 Oct. 10- Mr. Boulet gathered his group outside of GPCS. Along with Mrs. Lysak and Mrs. King, they boarded a bus for Writing-On-Stone with none other than Mr. T. Spackman driving! Did they know what they were in for? Day One:winds calm but cool. Students set up camp in designated areas and then explored while the 3 fierce leaders, Boulet, King and Lysak lunched. One group returned from their explorations to find that a few birds had chewed their way into their food boxes. Sure nice of them to share with the locals!. With snacks in hand to feed Mr. Boulet and themselves, the students were lead on a hike around the park. They saw beautiful hoodoos and land features, cool ancient writings and SNAKES! Yep! Having only heard stories about snakes and slitheries, the group actually saw a rattle snake crawling around in his hole. That night the wind shook the tents while the coyotes howled while they slept. hen are we going —HOME? IIIKnWX. Day Two: windy, rainy, cold- The park officer came by with her bus and took the group on an official tour of the Writing On Stone park. She told stories about the native people who use to live on the land and pointed out the different writings left behind. Once back at the campsite, the group played Capture the Flag and explored the hoodoos nearby. Johnny, however, tried desperately to please his team and ended up with a sprained ankle. Needless to say, he had to get Mr. Boulet to give him a piggy back ride back to the campsite where he was attended to by Nurse Lysak. That night, after roasting marshmallows and singing campfire songs, they fell asleep to the howling of the coyotes and the snoring of their leader, Mr. Boulet......or was it Mrs. Lysak???? Modification of crumb rubber cement interface and its effect on strength and viscoelastic properties

    No full text
Due to an increasing amount of waste tires being produced yearly, environmental concerns arise as waste tires in landfills pose both a fire hazard, and a habitat for rodents and mosquitos. As a result, the reuse of waste tires in the form of crumb rubber in concrete has been attempted. Previous research work has shown that the inclusion of crumb rubber in concrete results in a drastic decrease in compressive strength due to the incompatibilities between rubber and cement paste. The limitations related to the use of crumb rubber concrete are related to the interfacial transition zone between rubber and paste. Due to mismatches in free surface energy, coefficient of thermal expansion, and elastic modulus between rubber and cement paste, it has been observed that an interfacial gap is present; furthermore, entrapped air, microcracks, and inconsistent degree of hydration of cement paste has been observed at the transition zone. The research work presented here attempts to improve understanding about what conditions alter the local microstructure of crumb rubber cement interface; furthermore, the limitations and concerns in characterization of rubberized concrete from literature are detailed and studied, and modifications to testing matrix are attempted to better understand and quantify issues at the rubber-paste interface. The research work presented is subdivided into four tasks. The first task involves altering the design mix of rubberized cement paste to improve interface and performance. Within the first task, uses Type I and Type K expansive cement blend as a means of physically interlocking rubber and paste. The first task also includes usage of shrinkage reducing admixture in bulk mixture and as a pretreatment to alter the surface chemistry of rubber, and testing its effect on the performance of rubberized cement paste samples. The second task involves understanding how curing conditions alter the interface and subsequent mechanical performance of rubberized samples; the effect of relative humidity and temperature are explored. The third task involves targeted testing of the interface of various rubberized cement paste mixtures; understanding of interface performance, interfacial gap, and entrapped air quantity are explored. The fourth task involves a specialized application of crumb rubber in concrete; low-density rubberized foam concrete samples are cast and tested for application as engineering materials arresting system.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2022-05-01The student, Robbie Damiani, accepted the attached license on 2020-03-10 at 16:38.The student, Robbie Damiani, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2020-03-10 at 16:46.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2020-03-13 at 14:04.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #14884 on 2020-08-25 at 17:26:51Made available in DSpace on 2020-08-26T23:51:23Z (GMT).
