The Gibson Paradox: An Empirical Investigation for Turkey

    No full text
This paper tests the existence of Gibson paradox using the traditional and modern time series techniques in the case of annual Turkish data. Even though the results from the traditional Gibson paradox regression suggested a positive relationship between the interest rates and the prices levels in Turkish data, subsequently it was proven to be spurious. On analyzing the time series properties of the variables and the results from the Johansen cointegration procedure, we reveal that there is no support of the Gibson paradox in Turkish data.Gibson paradox; co-integration; Turkey

1,3,5-trioxane is the simplest cyclic form of polyoxymethylene (POM), a class of formaldehyde polymers that has been proposed as the origin of distributed formaldehyde formation in comet comae and a potential source of formaldehyde in prebiotic chemistry. Although claimed POM detections have since been proven to be inconclusive, laboratory simulations of cometary conditions have yielded trioxane and other POMsfootnote{Cottin, H., Bホnilan, Y., Gazeau, M-C., and Raulin, F. Origin of Cometary Extended Sources from Degradation of Refractory Organics on Grains: Polyoxymethylene as Formaldehyde Parent Molecule. textit{Icarus} textbf{167} (2004), 397-416.}. While the microwave spectrum of 1,3,5-trioxane has been studied extensivelyfootnote{Oka, T., Tsuchiya, K., Iwata, S., and Morino, Y. Microwave Spectrum of s-Trioxane. textit{Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn.} textbf{37} (1964), 4-7.}, to date only one rotationally-resolved ro-vibrational spectrum has been publishedfootnote{Henninot, J-F., Bolvin, H., Demaison, J., and Lemoine, B. The Infrared Spectrum of Trioxane in a Supersonic Slit Jet. textit{J. Mol. Spect.} textbf{152} (1992), 62-68.}. Here, we present our studies of the nub{16} band of gas-phase trioxane centered at 1177 wn. Trioxane was entrained in a supersonic expansion of argon and characterized by continuous-wave cavity ringdown spectroscopy using an etalon-stabilized external-cavity quantum cascade laserfootnote{Gibson, B.M. and McCall, B.J., contribution TJ08, presented at the 69th^{th} International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy, Urbana, IL, USA, 2014.}. Rotationally resolved spectra were obtained with less than 15 MHz resolution.Made available in DSpace on 2016-01-05T20:04:10Z (GMT). 1,3,5-trioxane, often used as a solid fuel or source of formaldehyde, is a symmetric top of the C3v_{3v} group. Although the microwave\footnote{Oka, T., Tsuchiya, K., Iwata, S., and Morino, Y. Microwave Spectrum of s-Trioxane. \textit{Bull. Chem. Soc. Jpn.} \textbf{37} (1964), 4-7.} and low-resolution vibrational spectra\footnote{Stair, A.T. Jr. and Nielsen, J. Rud. Vibrational Spectra of sym-Trioxane. \textit{J. Chem. Phys.} \textbf{27} (1957), 402-407.} have been studied extensively, only the \nub{17} band near 1072 \wn has been observed with rotational resolution\footnote{Henninot, J-F., Bolvin, H., Demaison, J., and Lemoine, B. The Infrared Spectrum of Trioxane in a Supersonic Slit Jet. \textit{J. Mol. Spect.} \textbf{152} (1992), 62-68.}. Here, we will present our studies of trioxane vapor from 1140-1220 \wn, covering the \nub{16} band at a resolution of approximately 30 MHz. Solid trioxane was heated, and the resulting vapor was entrained in a continuous supersonic expansion of argon. Continuous-wave cavity ringdown spectroscopy was then performed using a frequency-stabilized external cavity quantum cascade laser (EC-QCL) as the light source. In addition to providing new ro-vibrational transition frequencies of trioxane, the present work serves to validate our newly-developed EC-QCL spectrometer and will be used to evaluate the cooling performance of the sheath-flow supercritical fluid expansion source currently under development\footnote{Gibson, B.M., Stewart, J.T., and McCall, B.J., contribution TJ14, presented at the 68th International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy, Columbus, OH, USA, 2013.}.Made available in DSpace on 2014-09-17T16:56:18Z (GMT). Public worship and practical theology in the work of Benjamin Keach (1640-1704)

    No full text
The late seventeenth century was a critical and fruitful period for the Particular Baptists of England. Severely persecuted following the Restoration, toleration in 1689 brought its own perils. Particular Baptists were fortunate in having several strong leaders, especially the London trio of Hanserd Knollys, William Kiffin, and Benjamin Keach. Such a small and severely persecuted group as the Baptists could afford little time for academic pursuits, thus of necessity most of their theology was practical in nature. Benjamin Keach (1640-1704) was the most outstanding practical theologian among the English Particular Baptists of the late seventeenth century. This dissertation is a study of Keach, in particular his writings on public worship and practical theology. Although Keach was a prolific author, he has been almost completely neglected by scholars. After a biographical sketch of Keach, this study considers his writings on public worship and practical theology. In the area of worship, Keach made two outstanding contributions: First, he was the most vocal apologist for Baptist views on Baptism of his period. Secondly, and more importantly, his hymn writing and defense of hymn singing broke new ground, not just for Baptists, but for English Protestantism, in general. In addition to his contributions in these areas, he also dealt with the laying on of hands and the sabbath day worship controversy. Keach's contributions to practical theology fall into two main groups: his writings that concern religious education and those that deal with polity. In addition to these, Keach's vigorous advocacy of a high Calvinist soteriology are also considered under the rubric of practical theology. Keach's most important (although not his most positive) contribution in this area were his soteriological writings. Although well within the bounds of orthodoxy, some of the tendencies in Keach's soteriology were taken up by the following generation of Baptist leaders and developed into a stultifying hyper-Calvinism that handicapped Baptist evangelism and missions. In the conclusion, Keach's contributions to a theory of practical theology are considered

    Impact-Echo Dataset "IE Platte"

    No full text
This dataset contains raw data resulting from Impact-Echo measurements at the reference concrete block "IE Platte", located at BAM (German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing). The specimen contains three polystyrene slabs and one polyethylene foil to act as reflectors. The specimen was produced in a three-step process. First, the base plate was cast. Second, the reflectors were taped to the base plate. Finally, the upper layer was cast on top of base plate and reflectors. A drawing is contained in the dataset. The Impact-Echo method is based on the excitation of the zero-group-velocity frequency of the first symmetric Lamb mode of a plate-like structure, in order to assess its thickness. Numerous publications elaborate on Impact-Echo theory, examples are [1-3]. The measurements have been conducted using a setup that contains only commercially available components. The setup consists of an Olson CTG-2 concrete thickness gauge (Olsen Instruments, USA) for actuation and sensing and an 8-bit NI USB-5132 digital storage oscilloscope (National Instruments, USA) combined with the Echolyst software (Schweizerischer Verein für technische Inspektionen (SVTI), Switzerland) for data acquisition. Measurements were conducted using a grid of 29x29 points with a spacing of 50 mm. At each point 8192 samples were recorded at a sampling rate of 1 MS/s. The dataset contains the (X,Y) location in mm of the individual measurement points as well as the raw measurement data at those points. The data is provided in the formats *.mir/*.mhdr (Echolyst), *.npy (Python) and *.mat (Matlab) and *.csv to ease the import in various post-processing tools. References: [1] Gibson, A. and S. The effectiveness of project-based learning on net-generation aerospace engineering students

    No full text
This paper presents an analysis of project based learning for today’s engineering students, of the ‘net-generation’. The learning attributes of the so-called ‘net-generation’, being characterised by their exposed to computer technology throughout their childhood development, generate specific challenges to educators, as traditional education techniques are less effective. Independent learning and active collaborative learning are critical components of the project based learning technique, which may be an effective educational tool for academics to exploit. These approaches match the preferred learning style of ‘netgeneration’ students who exhibit strong preference for independent learning, group work and the use information and communication technologies. This investigation is supported by a case study, of a project conducted by final year students, in the School of Mechanical Engineering, at The University of Adelaide.Dorothy L. Ab initio modeling and experimental investigation of Fe2 P by DFT and spin spectroscopies

    No full text
Fe2P alloys have been identified as promising candidates for magnetic refrigeration at room-temperature and for custom magnetostatic applications. The intent of this study is to accurately characterize the magnetic ground state of the parent compound, Fe2P, with two spectroscopic techniques, μSR and NMR, in order to provide solid bases for further experimental analysis of Fe2P-type transition metal based alloys. We perform zero applied field measurements using both techniques below the ferromagnetic transition TC=220 K. The experimental results are reproduced and interpreted using first principles simulations, validating this approach for quantitative estimates in alloys of interest for technological applications.</p
