Conflictual engagement : how Italian feminist movements navigate institutional interaction while preserving radical identity
No full textRadical feminists face a difficult choice: remain pure outsiders with limited impact, or risk cooptation by engaging with the very institutions they seek to overthrow. Historically, the Italian feminist movement has maintained a staunchly anti-institutional stance. The Italian state, on the other hand, has exhibited limited institutional support for gender equality as well as a weak development of state feminism. Despite this antagonistic backdrop, feminist movements and institutions do interact through what this study terms “conflictual engagement,” a framework that reveals how anti-institutional movements can work within existing systems while preserving their radical identity. Three key elements define these interactions: antagonist representation, indirect influence, and pragmatic interaction. Drawing on thirty interviews with feminist activists and politicians, the study challenges binary interpretations of movements as either entirely antagonistic or fully aligned with institutions, emphasizing the productive role of conflict in shaping these relationships and enhancing democratic engagement

Get PDFThis article analyzes different paths leading to similar outcomes across three age-cohorts of activists in three feminist spaces in Italy. It addresses three challenges in the literature on biographical outcomes. First, it brings forward the methodological problem of recognizing crossing-points, which define a before-and-after in the activist’s life course. Second, it improves the ways in which gender and sexuality are discussed in terms of biographical outcomes. Third, this empirical study elaborates the time in movement and the generational aspects of biographical outcomes, emphasizing the radical challenge of the younger cohorts and the long-term effects on the older cohort. This article suggests that only by deep case study, which incorporates different feminist spaces, we are able to better understand the gendered and generational biographical outcomes of feminist movements. These results can also be insightful for the analysis of other types of collective action outcomes
Black Women's Voices Reach Out the World
No full textThe enduring struggle of black feminism to make the voice of marginalized groups matter is developed in this book by Djamila Ribeiro, a Black Brazilian feminist philosopher and journalist, through the notion of “the place of the word” and the issue of the accessibility of knowledge. In her work Lugar de Fala (The Place of the Word, 2019), she comes across the longstanding history of black women’s fights and resistance, challenging the universal epistemology that constantly misreads some voices instead of others. This book, recently translated into Italian, French, and Spanish, is aimed at producing a tool for political action by crossing geographical, political, and social borders and supporting black women’s empowerment and self-awareness. According to the radical idea of accessibility of knowledge, Ribeiro speaks to everyone, democratizing the access to certain concepts and tools. This political task has been taken on by an independent Italian publishing house, which carried on Ribeiro’s effort in the European context
