    The efficacy of bone reconstructive therapies in the management of peri-implantitis. A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of bone reconstructive procedures for the reduction of probing pocket depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP) and suppuration (SOP) in peri-implantitis-related bone defects at ≥ 12-month follow-up. Materials and methods: Three databases were searched for RCTs and CCTs that compared bone reconstructive therapies to access flap surgery (Focused Question - FQ 1) and RCTs, CCTs and prospective case series that assessed the efficacy of reconstructive therapies (FQ 2). Meta-analysis was performed for FQ1 when ≥3 studies were identified, while for FQ2 a network was drawn based on RCTs with common treatment arms. Results: Seven RCTs were identified for FQ1, while 5 RCTs and 6 prospective case series for FQ2. There was no significant difference in PPD change between access flap surgery and reconstructive surgery (-0.387; p=0.325) at 12 months. Furthermore, no clear differences in terms of PPD and BOP changes resulted from the different reconstructive therapies included in the network. Only a small percentage of treated cases with any modality achieved peri-implantitis resolution, as defined by different composite outcomes. Conclusions: Reconstructive surgery does not offer significant improvements in peri-implant clinical parameters as compared to access flap surgery at 12-months.     Development of an in vitro model of the dentogingival junction using 3D organotypic constructs

    Objectives: The overall aim was to propose a plausible model of the dentogingival junction (DGJ) to deepen our understanding of the extrinsic influences responsible for the development of the junctional epithelial phenotype. The specific objective was to test the hypothesis that epithelial migration and proliferation would be inhibited by periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts in an in vitro model of the DGJ consisting of 3D organotypic cultures. Background: Previously, we showed that 3D organotypic cultures containing human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) supported the development of a multi-layered epithelium, while constructs containing human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPDLF) resulted in epithelial atrophy (Lu EMC, Hobbs C, Dyer CJ, Ghuman M, Hughes FJ. J Perio Res., 2020). However, changes in epithelial phenotype have not been studied within an in vitro model of the DGJ. Methods: The in vitro model of the DGJ comprised of a donor HGF construct (H400 epithelium overlying HGF-collagen matrix) supported by a dimensionally larger recipient collagen bed enriched with HPDLF. Samples were harvested, fixed and processed for immunohistochemistry. The changes in epithelial migration and proliferation following contact with HPDLF were assessed by measuring the horizontal extension of the epithelial outgrowth on the recipient collagen matrix. Results: Within our in vitro model of the DGJ, epithelial migration and proliferation were inhibited following contact with the recipient HPDLF. By contrast, the control set-up showed a relative increase in epithelial growth, where the epithelium came into contact with the recipient HGF. Overall, there were limited changes in the molecular expression of keratin markers. Conclusion: This study has proposed a plausible in vitro model of the DGJ to illustrate the role of different fibroblasts in the regulation of dentogingival epithelia. Furthermore, it suggests that the anatomical positional stability of the JE and its apparent resistance to apical migration could be associated with its interaction with the PDL.</p

    The Quest for Citations: Drivers of Article Impact

    Why do some articles become building blocks for future scholars, while many others remain unnoticed? We aim to answer this question by contrasting, synthesizing and simultaneously testing three scientometric perspectives – universalism, social constructivism and presentation – on the influence of article and author characteristics on article citations. To do so, we study all articles published in a sample of five major journals in marketing from 1990 to 2002 that are central to the discipline. We count the number of citations each of these articles has received and regress this count on an extensive set of characteristics of the article (i.e. article quality, article domain, title length, the use of attention grabbers and expositional clarity), and the author (i.e. author visibility and author personal promotion). We find that the number of citations an article in the marketing discipline receives, depends upon “what one says†(quality and domain), on “who says it†(author visibility and personal promotion) and not so much on “how one says it†(title length, the use of attention grabbers, and expositional clarity). Our insights contribute to the marketing literature and are relevant to scientific stakeholders, such as the management of scientific journals and individual academic scholars, as they strive to maximize citations. They are also relevant to marketing practitioners. They inform practitioners on characteristics of the academic journals in marketing and their relevance to decisions they face. On the other hand, they also raise challenges towards making our journals accessible and relevant to marketing practitioners: (1) authors visible to academics are not necessarily visible to practitioners; (2) the readability of an article may hurt academic credibility and impact, while it may be instrumental in influencing practitioners; (3) it remains questionable whether articles that academics assess to be of high quality are also managerially relevant.Impact;Citation Analysis;Referencing;Scientometrics;Cite

    AbstractMost arch anomalies are asymptomatic and detected incidentally on imaging or on autopsy. Occasionally, such anomalies can manifest clinically when associated with another vascular pathology such as an intracranial aneurysm. In this report, we describe a rare case of agenesis of the left common carotid artery with separate origin of the left internal carotid artery and the external carotid artery from the arch discovered on digital subtraction angiography performed during the evaluation of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Knowledge of such anomalies and radiographic appearance is essential for interventional neuroradiologist in planning treatment of such cases.</jats:p

    The personalization process can either be focused on individuals and their interaction with documents, or on the identification of shared patterns of behavior and the segmentation of the user population into groups of common interests. One issue in the personalization and the filtering processes is the selection of an appropriate model for the efficient representation and manipulation of user profiles and documents. It should be capable of facilitating the determination of relevant documents in terms of similarity between users and documents. The aim of this paper is to introduce three models for representing documents and profiles in the search process, and to examine their computational processes. The volume of document databases, the large number of users and their different interests creates the need for precise and efficient filtering techniques. This paper investigates different information retrieval models, which can be used to determine the similarity between documents and user profiles

    The Photo Album: Autoethnographic Witnessing and the Post-Shoah Re-creation of Memory

    With a focus on a family photograph album this doctoral dissertation uses the idea that testimonial objects speak and initiate the creation of new memory. To frame her theoretical approach the author refers to the literatures of memory studies, Holocaust studies, material cultures, autoethnography and contemporary psychoanalytic theory. The author was particularly influenced by an early reading of Art Spiegelman’s (1973, 1986) classic graphic novels about his family’s experience in the Shoah, Maus I and Maus II, long before this dissertation was imagined. The author contends that literature and art is an effective way of communicating experience that defies direct reference. Recovering the stories of her forebears is this author’s mechanism of understanding silence, retrieving the existence of family members, some of whom were believed to have perished in the Shoah, honoring their memory and helping future generations connect to their ancestors. The author describes her research methodology for her doctoral dissertation as a blend of autoethnography, narrative inquiry and an organic emergent approach. Historically, as we emerge into a period of time where there are fewer eye-witnesses to the Shoah and new approaches to learning about its impact, the author’s research rests on the idea that there is an emerging third generation discussion. The key methodological question asked in this doctoral dissertation is how creative autoethnographical witnessing and exploration of family stories in a narrative can help develop insight concerning the transgenerational impacts of the Shoah. Will the process of autoethnographic creative writing combined with multi-media depictions of a story as an art-based expression of research develop a representation of that which had been disavowed? Can the representation then be added to the repertoire of effective discourse and action toward combatting antisemitism and other forms of hate? The author proposes that research as an act of transgenerational witnessing can lead to illumination benefiting those within and outside of her community regarding cataclysmic loss.Graduat

    Profiling Customers Based on Their Social Risk Perception: A Cluster Analysis Approach

    Past research asserts that social risk is an important determinant of consumer purchase behaviour; however, the characteristics of consumers who perceive high/low social risk in a purchase decision have been largely neglected. This study examines consumer social risk perception from a sample of Indian consumers of automobiles. The study segments the consumers using a cluster analysis, and explores differences between clusters based on consumers’ social risk perception and their psychological, cultural, and socio-demographic variables. Need for cognition (NFC) and risk-taking tendency are the two psychological variables focused in the study. The three cultural dimensions considered include collectivism, power distance, and masculinity. The cluster analysis yielded three clusters: high social risk perceivers, medium social risk perceivers, and low social risk perceivers. High social risk perceivers are found to be the individuals with high NFC, low risk-taking tendency, high collectivism, low power distance, and high masculinity. Medium social risk perceivers are the individuals with medium level of NFC, risk taking tendency and collectivism, and are low on power distance and masculinity. Low social risk perceivers are the consumers low in NFC, high in risk-taking tendency, low on collectivism, high on power distance, and low on masculinity. Further, each cluster was cross tabulated with consumer demographics. </jats:p
