Structural Adjustment, Global Trade and the New Political Economy of Development

Biplab Dasgupta. Structural Adjustment Global Trade and the New Political Economy of Development. New Delhi. Sage Publications. 1998. Price Indian Rupees 450 (hardback). The author has written a very topical book the relevance of which cannot be understated. At the core of the book the author discusses the concept of the new political economy of development which forms the theoretical underpinnings that lie behind the structural adjustment/ stabilisation programmes of the international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Biplab Dasgupta has very concisely and succinctly analysed the new political economy of development which has, as its centre-piece, a blind faith in the operation of free-market forces. This can be traced back to the Reagan and Thatcher years, which saw a shift away from interventionist policies to allowing the markets to decide

Biplab Majumdar and His Poetry with Special Attention to Cosmic Convergence

    No full text
Biplab Majumdar is the author of nearly 100 books of poetry, prose, rhyme, translation, novels and short stories. His works are published both in Bengali and English. The contents of this latest volume, Cosmic Convergence, are divided into two parts: Part-A covers the year from January to December and Part-B contains 12 poems on a variety of subjects. The poems are followed by 3 pages of selected comments on Biplab Majumdar’s by a variety of eminent authors. This volume makes possible an assessment of the scope and stature of Majumdar’s work. These poems-often witty and beautiful- are an achievement, a testament to Majumdar’s ongoing power to engage us in his vision. They confirm Majumdar’s reputation as one of India’s finest poets. From evocations of the daily wonders of life to explorations of spirituality, feelings and sensibilities. His celebration of idiom and understanding of the modern mind may help us to understand ourselves

A water soluble Ni-Schiff base complex for homogeneous green catalytic C S cross-coupling reactions

Since the embarkation of C – S cross-coupling from aryl halides with thiols a handful of works have been contemplated in aqueous medium. Herein, we report an example of a water soluble Ni-Schiff base complex as the green catalyst for the synthesis of thioethers. We have synthesized a Ni-Schiff base complex [NiL(H2O)2 ](ClO4)2 using N 4 -donor Schiff base ligand (1,3-bis(((E)-pyridin-2-ylmethylene)amino)propan-2-ol) and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) study along with different spectral analyses. The complex is mono-nuclear and cationic in nature having two perchlorate anions. Two water molecules remain coordinated with the Ni(II)-centre. The hydrogen bonding interaction through coordinated water and perchlorate anions connect the monomeric units to form 2D supramolecular structure. Based on its aqueous solubility, the complex has been used for the catalytic C – S cross-coupling reaction between aryl iodide and aryl or alkyl thiols using TBAB at 60 ◦ C in aqueous media (yield 92%). At room temperature, an isolated yield of 57% can be achieved. This environmentally benign protocol is paramount in view of the environmental sustainability

Bismuth halide semiconductors : a combined theoretical and experimental approach for photovoltaics

Lead-free halide perovskites have received huge interests lately following the unparalleled success of MAPbI3 in photovoltaics. The non-toxic bismuth-based halide perovskites, which offer good ambient stability compared to Pb-based halide perovskites, remain one of the key areas for the development of lead-free absorber materials. Like Pb-based halide perovskites, Bi-based perovskites also exhibit rich structural varieties and tunable optoelectronic properties. Among various Bi-based perovskites, Cs3Bi2I9 was selected for detailed investigations as it shows good atmospheric stability and reasonable optical bandgap for a single-junction solar cell. However, the photovoltaic performance of Cs3Bi2I9 was found to be poor, limited by low photocurrent density. To comprehend this unusually poor performance, we carried out in-depth photophysical investigations on Cs3Bi2I9 combined with ab-initio calculations. A comparative photoluminescence spectroscopic study between thin-films and single crystals revealed the presence of defects that act as non-radiative recombination centres. This is further supported by the first principle calculations. Based on our theoretical calculations, we demonstrated that synthesizing Cs3Bi2I9 in excess BiI3 environment could passivate some of the defects, resulting in improved of power conversion efficiencies. Nonetheless, further investigations on photophysical properties show that the photovoltaic (PV) performance is not limited by only free carrier generation, but also on the inefficient extraction of carriers. Due to the zero-dimensional crystal structure, as opposed to the threedimensional (3D) network of lead-based halide perovskites, the extraction of long-lived free carriers is found to be inefficient for Bi-based perovskites. To overcome this problem, we replaced Cs+ with Ag+, which promotes a 3D crystal structure. The PV performances of the silver bismuth iodide system are found to be superior compared to any other bismuth-based perovskites reported so far. The highest power conversion efficiency is similar to that of MAPbI3 when the latter was first incorporated in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), but with improved atmospheric stability. It is worth mentioning that silver bismuth iodide-based solar cells were produced in ambient atmosphere, which itself is a massive advantage over fabrication techniques of lead-based halide perovskites. Overall, our study reveals that a 3D crystal structure is an essential criterion for high-efficiency lead-free perovskites. Our study also demonstrates that the ns2 electronic configuration is not a sufficient parameter to describe defect-tolerant semiconductor, rather should be considered as one of the necessary variables along with structural dimensionality.Doctor of Philosoph

Macroanatomy and 3-dimensional modeling of the tentacular head of Phascolosoma arcuatum (Grey, 1828)

Abstract: The macroanatomy of the tentacular head of Phascolosoma arcuatum belongs to phylum Sipuncula has been studied under light microscopic methods and computer aided graphics analysis. The tentacular head structure has been reconstructed using computer aided graphics analysis using series histological images on computer aided software platform. The P. arcuatum has only five, semitransparent, pigmented, lobed tentacles in tentacular crown with large tentacular coelomic connections. We found that the tentacles are lined by ciliated columnar epithelium with large number of mucosecretory cells, indicating their deposit feeding habit. Fewer number of tentacles, body wall and there burrowing habit supports there integumentary breathing habit. A thick striated collar encircles the tentacles forming the ventral wall of the mouth channel and protects tentacles from mechanical damage when retracted. These structural peculiarities revealed from macroanatomical analysis are strongly suggestive about the important role of the collar region of the tentacular crown of the head of P. arcuatum in relation to its burrowing habit to its concern habitat.
