Primo Levi e Pierre Bayle.

Decidability of freshness, undecidability of revelation (extended abstract)

We study decidability of a logic for describing processes with restricted names. We choose a minimal fragment of the Ambient Logic, but the techniques we present should apply to every logic which uses Cardelli and Gordon revelation and hiding operators, and Gabbay and Pitts freshness quantifier. We start from the static fragment of ambient logic that Calcagno, Cardelli and Gordon proved to be decidable. We prove that the addition of a hiding quantifier makes the logic undecidable. Hiding can be decomposed as freshness plus revelation. Quite surprisingly, freshness alone is decidable, but revelation alone is not

NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF MEMBRANE PRELOADS ON THE LOW-SPEED IMPACT RESPONSE OF COMPOSITE LAMINATES

This article presents a comprehensive study on the mechanical behaviour of composite laminated plates undergoing a low-speed impact of an external body while they are subjected to in-plane preloads. The effect of such preloading was investigated by means of finite-element analysis of several impact events on laminates with three different span-to-thickness ratios. Tensile and compressive preloads, both uniaxial and biaxial, were considered; in the case of compression, the impact on buckled specimens was also studied. The results obtained show that the span-to-thickness ratio is a fundamental parameter in determining the effect of initial strains. Under a tensile preload, the impact-caused peak stresses were higher than in the case of no preload, and their increment was higher in thicker laminates. Under compression, the most dangerous influence of initial stresses was found at medium span-to-thickness ratios for preloads comparable with the buckling load, whereas, in other cases, negligible or even beneficial effects were observed. These results can justify some experimental findings from the existing literature, even if they were obtained without modelling the material degradation due to damage. Also, they allow us to conclude that the explanation of other phenomena strictly related to damage, as well as an accurate prediction of the extent of damage, requires a failure model

    Basic theory of F-bounded quantification

    No full text
System F-bounded is a second order typed lambda calculus, where the basic features of object-oriented languages can be naturally modelled. F-bounded extends the better known system , in a way that provides an immediate solution for the treatment of the so-called ``binary methods''. Although more powerful than and also quite natural, system F-bounded has only been superficially studied from a foundational perspective and many of its essential properties have been conjectured but never proved in the literature. The aim of this paper is to give a solid foundation to F-bounded, by addressing and proving the key properties of the system. In particular transitivity elimination, completeness of the type checking semi-algorithm, the subject reduction property for reduction, conservativity with respect to system and antisymmetry of a ``full'' subsystem are considered, and various possible formulations for system F-bounded are compared. Finally a semantic interpretation of system F-bounded is presented, based on partial equivalence relations
