Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Herstellung biomorpher, poröser Keramiken mittels Chemischer Gasphaseninfiltration und Reaktion
Biomorphic ceramics are a new class of materials derived from natural biopolymers that can be fabricated by different ceramization routes in order to produce carbides, nitrides and oxides, depending on the processing conditions. A wide variety of non-oxide ceramics such as SiC, Si3N4 and SiC-Si3N4 in addition to oxide-based ceramics like TiO2 have been produced in this study from carbonized paper preforms using Chemical Vapor Infiltration and Reaction (CVI-R) technique. For production of non-oxide ceramics, different precursor systems such as SiCl4/H2 and Metlytrichlorosilane (MTS)/H2 were used in order to deposit firstly preceramic layers such as Si or Si/SiC into the carbon template, then by further chemical reaction in He or N2 containing atmosphere at high temperature, SiC, Si3N4 and SiC-Si3N4 composite ceramics with different composition, phase structure and morphology were obtained successfully. As SiC-based ceramics are used commonly for high temperature structural applications, the influence of SiC microstructure and the SiC-Si3N4 composition on their oxidation resistance performance was investigated under isothermal and cyclic oxidation conditions. Additionally, processing of biomorphic TiO2 ceramics by CVI-R technique was carried out firstly by infiltration of the carbon biotemplate with TiCl4/H2/CH4 and TiCl4/H2/N2 precursors in order to obtained TiC and TiN, respectively. Subsequently, TiO2 ceramics were obtained by exposing TiC or TiN to oxidation step in airflow at a wide range of temperatures. Their crystalline structure (anatase, rutile) as well as specific surface area (SSA) and mechanical properties was found to depend on the oxidation temperature. Generally, the SSA of biomorphic carbide ceramics obtained by CVI-R technique is low, not more than 1 m2/g, which is not suitable for applications as catalyst or catalyst support. The carbide derived carbon (CDC) approach was applied on the SiC and TiC ceramics as an additional step in the ceramization process in order to enhance their SSA. Nanoporous carbon with very high SSA was generated on the carbide surface which was subsequently converted into highly porous SiC or TiC by either CVI or CVI-R technique using appropriate precursor system. The photocatalytic activity of biomorphic TiO2 ceramics prepared by different techniques such as conventional CVI-R, CVI-R combined with CDC approach and SiC viii supported TiO2 ceramics was evaluated by photodegradation of 4-Chlorophenol under ultraviolet radiation. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 obtained by combined CVIR/ CDC approach exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity due to its higher crystalline anatase structure with higher SSA compared to the other TiO2 samples. The biomorphic porous ceramics produced by CVI-R technique shows very good mechanical performance even after oxidation at high temperature. Possible applications as catalyst (TiO2) or catalyst support (SiC, SiC-Si3N4) even at high temperatures can be applied.Biomorphe Keramiken stellen eine neue Klasse von Materialien dar, die aus natürlichen Biopolymeren abgeleitet werden. Über verschiedene Keramisierungsverfahren können Karbide, Nitride und Oxide, mit unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften hergestellt werden. Ein breites Spektrum an nicht-oxidischen Keramiken, wie etwa SiC, Si3N4 und SiC-Si3N4 zusätzlich zu den oxid-basierten Keramiken, wie TiO2 wurden im Rahmen dieser Arbeit aus Papiervorformen mittels chemischer Gasphaseninfiltration und Reaktion (CVI-R) hergestellt. Für die Herstellung von nicht-oxidischen Keramiken wurden verschiedene Precursorsysteme, wie SiCl4/H2 und Methyltrichlorsilan (MTS)/H2 verwendet, um zuerst präkeramische Schichten, wie Si odor Si/SiC auf das Kohlenstofftemplat abzuscheiden. Anschließend wurden durch chemische Reaktion in He- oder N2-Atmosphäre bei hohen Temperaturen SiC, Si3N4 und SiC-Si3N4 Keramiken mit unterschiedlicher Zusammensetzung, Phasenstruktur und Morphologie erfolgreich erzeugt. Da SiC-basierte Keramiken allgemein Anwendung im Hochtemperaturbereich finden, wurde der Einfluss der SiC-Mikrostruktur und der SiC-Si3N4 Zusammensetzung auf ihre Oxidationsbeständigkeit unter isothermer sowie zyklischer Oxidation untersucht. Zusätzlich wurde die Herstellung von biomorphen TiO2-Keramiken mittels CVI-R Technik durch Infiltration des Kohlenstofftemplates mit den Precursorsystemen TiCl4/H2/CH4 oder TiCl4/H2/N2 zuerst TiC oder TiN erzeugt. In einem anschließenden Oxidationsschritt im Luftstrom in einem weiten Temperaturbereich wurden die TiC oder TiN-Keramiken zu TiO2-Keramiken umgesetzt. Ihre kristalline Struktur (Anatas, Rutil) sowie die spezifische Oberfläche und mechanischen Eigenschaften sind von der Oxidationstemperatur abhängig. Im Allgemeinen ist die spezifische Oberfläche von biomorphen Keramiken die durch den CVI-R Prozess hergestellt wurden, sehr gering, – kleiner 1 m2/g – was sie für die Anwendung als Katalysator oder Katalysatorträger nicht attraktiv macht. Die Carbidederived Carbon (CDC) Methode wurde an den SiC und TiC-Keramiken angewendet, um die spezifische Oberfläche zu erhöhen. Der nanoporöse Kohlenstoff mit sehr hoher spezifischer Oberfläche wurde auf der Karbidoberfläche erzeugt und im nächsten Schritt in hochporöses SiC oder TiC mittels CVI oder CVI-R mit geeigneten Precursorsystemen umgewandelt. x Die photokatalytische Aktivität der biomorphen TiO2-Keramiken, die durch unterschiedliche Route hergestellt wurde, hinsichtlich der Photozersetzung von 4- Chlorphenol unter UV-Licht untersucht. Dabei zeigt die durch den CVI-R Prozess mit anschließender CDC-Methode modifizierte Keramik die höchste photokatalytische Aktivität aufgrund des hohen Anteils der kristallineren Anatasstruktur mit höherer spezifischer Oberfläche verglichen mit den anderen TiO2-Keramiken. Die biomorphen, porösen Keramiken die mittels CVI-R Technik hergestellt wurden, zeigen sehr gute mechanische Eigenschaften sogar nach Hochtemperaturoxidation. Anwendungen als Katalysator (TiO2) oder als hochtemperaturbeständiger Katalysatorträger (SiC, SiC-Si3N4) sind daher viel versprechend
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
