Hygrothermal Modeling of Masonry with Interior Insulation Retrofit - Perspectives on hygrothermal performance and modeling-uncertainty

    No full text
Energy retrofit of existing buildings is mainly an endeavor to reduce energy consumption. Interior insulation retrofit of masonry falls among retrofit measures in this regard. However, interior insulation of masonry may give rise to hygrothermal risks in the structure. Thus, hygrothermal analysis of solutions for such retrofit becomes paramount. Such analysis often involves hygrothermal simulations of models that represent the retrofit scenario. Unfortunately, analysis of this kind can be complex and often suffers from lack of information, like limited access to the material properties involved, or it suffers from inaccurate understanding of the acting moisture transfer mechanisms. Uncertainties thus exist that practitioners should be aware of. The objective of this thesis is to provide a contribution to modeling techniques and to provide an insight that highlights modeling uncertainty. This with a focus on modeling bare brick masonry exposed to driving rain in the context of interior insulation retrofit. The work spans small- and large-scale experiments, analytical work on material property modeling methods, and hygrothermal modeling and simulation. In the experiment work, a focus is given moisture absorption along the brick-mortar interface, which is an important aspect of rain absorption of bare brick masonry. The information gathered on such absorption is further investigated by hygrothermal simulation. The work includes establishing a hygrothermal model for 2D and 3D analysis, where different parameters and modeling choices are investigated. A 3D analysis is of particular interest regarding beam ends embedded in the masonry, a detail vulnerable to moisture damage in interior insulation retrofitting of masonry. A smart vapor barrier (SVB), which provides an inward drying potential during warm weather, while preventing interstitial condensation during cold weather, is given special attention since little data has previously been gathered on the performance of SVB as a measure in combination with interior insulated masonry. Simplified modeling of hydraulic conductivity (liquid permeability) is explored to ease engineering applicability through prediction based on the capillary absorption coefficient and retention curve. This is done in the framework of a bundle of tubes model that is supplemented with a liquid film model, with the latter covering surface diffusion. A large-scale laboratory experiment, including varying configurations of interior insulated masonry wall structures, is presented, and assessed for performance by the varying of parameters. In addition, it provides a scenario with accompanying performance results with which to compare hygrothermal simulations against, for a check of realism of simulation results

Climate robust buildings: towards buildings with a robust energy performance under climate change

Building performance simulation (BPS) is a powerful tool allowing building designers to estimate the behavior of buildings and assess the impacts of their design decisions on their performance. BPS requires large number of input variables, of which some can be predicted during design phase with reasonable certainty such as thermal properties of materials and building dimensions, and some are difficult to be predicted, such as climate and occupancy. Climate as an input variable in BPS is the main theme of this PhD work. Climate conditions are key input variables for BPS, but traditionally and for simplification, a typical climate condition is used to represent the most likely condition that a building will experience. Such approach results for the final designs to be sensitive to variation of climate conditions and even fail to provide expected performance when the conditions are beyond typical ranges. Such sensitivity of buildings to atypical climate conditions is becoming more critical considering that due to climate change the frequency and intensity of extreme climate conditions is increasing. This thesis provides an overview of the risks induced by climate change on the performance of buildings and provide a method for protection against future climate uncertainty. The first step towards protection against climate uncertainty is to identify the climate conditions that a building might face during its life span. The work identifies a prospect of climate conditions for built environment as: climate normals or typical climate conditions and climate extremes. Climate extremes are distinguished into two: foreseeable extreme conditions and unforeseeable extreme events. It further discusses to which extent these conditions can be considered during the design phase of buildings. After identifying the possible climate conditions, a work was set to create a framework that conceptualise protection for buildings against all these conditions. After reviewing the concepts and definitions provided in the literature, the two concepts of «robustness» and «resilience» were found appropriate for the aimed framework. According to the defined framework, the concept of robustness is the most proper to deal with typical and foreseeable extreme climate conditions, where in this concept the main focus is on reducing the sensitivity of performance under presence of source of uncertainty. The discussion on protection against unforeseeable extreme events falls into the concept of resilience, where withstanding and recovery mechanisms should be considered and was out of scope of this thesis. Based on the framework a climate robust building is “a building that, while in operation, can provide its performance requirements with a minimum variation under typical and foreseeable extreme climate conditions“ In the second step, a total of 74 representative weather files are synthesized for city of Geneva to account for future foreseeable extreme conditions together with typical climate conditions. The aim is to investigate the impacts of these conditions on the energy performance of single buildings and their combination to create a virtual neighborhood. The results showed, depending on the type of building, the relative change of peak load for cooling demand under near future can be up to 28.5% higher for extreme conditions compared to typical conditions. Furthermore, the results for the neighborhood demonstrate the critical situation that an energy network may face due to increased peak load under extreme climatic conditions. It is concluded that only those weather files that take into consideration both typical and extreme conditions are the most reliable for providing representative boundary conditions to test the energy robustness of buildings under future climate uncertainties. In the final step, a method is proposed in this work, in which three future weather files including typical, extreme warm and extreme cold conditions are used in a simulation-based optimization process. The method allows architects and engineers to effectively consider future climate uncertainties during the design phase and achieve solutions with robust energy performance against these uncertainties. Using only three weather files make the process feasible and computationally inexpensive. To test the effectiveness of the method, the primary energy use of an obtained optimum solution is calculated for the 74 weather files. According to the results, the performance of the optimum solution not only has 81.5% lower variation (less sensitivity to climate uncertainty) but at the same time 14.4% lower mean value of energy use in comparison to a solution that is compliant with a recent construction standard (ASHRAE 90.1-2016). Less sensitivity to climate uncertainty means better robustness against climate change and simultaneously keeping a high performance. The simplicity and the low computational demand of the process ascertain the feasibility and applicability of this method. The approach can be used at any stage of design process and can help architects and engineers to improve robustness of their design against future climate uncertainties

Moisture performance of thermally insulated basement walls in cold climates

Climate change entails frequent and intense events of heavy rainfall and rain-induced floods in many regions with cold climates. In addition, present solutions for stormwater management involve the infiltration of surface runoff into the ground surrounding the buildings. Although sufficient drainage normally prevents water pressure on the basement envelopes in new buildings, the basement envelope is still prone to high moisture strain in the form of high relative humidity (RH) in soil/backfill, precipitation/stormwater, and water from snowmelt. The primary objective of this thesis has been to make novel contributions to the scientific knowledge regarding the effect of outward drying of thermally insulated concrete basement walls. Several scoping and desktop studies were conducted to map the extent of scientific research available. Furthermore, a novel experimental method that involved applying load cells to monitor the outward drying and precipitated condensation of concrete wall segments insulated with different configurations of thermal insulation and dimpled membranes was developed. In the experiment, the wall segments were exposed to warm interior and cold and humid exterior conditions in a climate simulator. Subsequently, numerical simulations were conducted using COMSOL Multiphysics®. The simulations were performed to investigate the concrete wall segments from the laboratory experiment and the long-term moisture performance of thermally insulated basement walls. The vapour permeability of the exterior thermal insulation, moisture performance of three types of concrete, effect of two dimpled membrane positions, and effect of interior vapour barriers were investigated. The literature reviews and desktop studies provided an overview of the international recommendations for thermally insulated basements in cold-climate countries and studies focusing on the hygrothermal simulations of basement envelopes. Differences between the recommendations primarily pertained to the exterior damp proofing of the walls, use and position of dimpled membranes and vapour barriers, and use of vapour-permeable thermal insulation. Note that a method for the validation of the hygrothermal simulations of basements using full-scale physical measurements was not found in the literature. Therefore, it was concluded that a recognised method/procedure to determine the below-grade exterior boundary conditions is required. In the experimental study, the three basement wall segments exhibited similar drying rates. Thus, it was concluded that the outward drying was primarily limited by the concrete type and not the exterior thermal insulation or position of the dimpled membrane. This inference was validated by numerical simulations. Using vapour-permeable thermal insulation on the exterior side of basement walls in dwellings might improve the moisture performance of the interior wall components; however, the effect of the insulation will primarily depend on the capillary moisture transfer of the concrete and the thickness and permeability of the exterior and interior insulation. If the concrete dries slowly, a dimpled membrane positioned between the concrete and exterior insulation might provide sufficient drying, assuming that the air gap behind the membrane is slightly ventilated. Therefore, the span of the moisture properties of concrete used in basements requires a thorough investigation

Expanding knowledge base for photovoltaic systems’ integration by contributing to the development of an experimental testing method for evaluation of their performance as climate screens

Building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) is a vital element of zero energy or zero emission buildings (ZEB). BIPV systems are integrated into the building envelope and generate electricity on-site during the expected service lifetime of a system of around 25-30 years. The primary function of a BIPV system is seen as electricity production. Hence, factors that affect it are usually in focus when systems are evaluated and monitored after installation. While its function as a building envelope component is usually not appropriately evaluated, neither before nor after installation. One of the main functions of building envelope components is weather protection of inner building structures. A significant impact of precipitation on the building envelope is represented by WDR (wind-driven rain), a simultaneous occurrence of wind and rain. Most wind-driven rain testing is done for façade systems, wall-windows, and wall-doors, while much less is published on WDR testing for roof systems. Furthermore, BIPV systems are barely studied as climate screens. Watertightness of BIPV systems can be evaluated using WDR exposure testing. Water leakages that occur during testing should be quantified to provide valuable information in addition to the usual qualitative data. This thesis contributes to the research on WDR testing by investigating selected BIPV systems for roof integration with means of quantitative measurements. This thesis presents results from experimental testing of a water collection system for quantification of WDR intrusion and provides extensive information on the design and application of BIPV systems designed for roof integration. As a result, a framework is presented, which includes a step-by-step test methodology and a detailed description of the construction of the water collection system. This methodology was applied to three BIPV systems designed for roof integration: solar shingles system integrated along metal roof plates, solar roof tiles integrated along dummy roof tiles produced by the same manufacturer, and large glass-glass solar modules integrated along steel roof plates. The watertightness level was determined for all the tested systems. The systems can be ranked according to their watertightness level, i.e., the maximum level of air pressure applied simultaneously with water spray and runoff water when no water leakages occur on the tested system’s inner side

Her blir bruk av dampbrems mest gunstig.

Parameterstudien undersøkte 135 parametervariasjoner fordelt på to konstruksjoner. As much as an estimated 75 percent of all building damage is related to moisture and water. Moisture contributes, among other things, to good growth conditions for mold, which is the most important negative health factor in indoor environments. Structural floors in wood-frame houses, with a transition to the outer wall, present challenges related to moisture and mold growth. The traditional design means that moist indoor air can diffuse into the structure, and condense in contact with the edge beam. This contributes to good mold growth conditions. This study investigates how structural floors between heated rooms can be made as moisture-proof as possible in order to reduce the risk of mold growth in the edge beam. Initially, seven semi-structured interviews were conducted in order to represent experiences from the industry. In addition, the interviews were used to showcase the problem in a parametric study. The parametric study elucidated 135 parameter variations divided into two constructions. The parameter variations were simulated in the WUFI 2D application, with subsequent mold index calculations in WUFI Mold Index VTT. The results indicate that the risk of mold growth in the edge beam is real. Observations by informants indicate condensation problems associated with an outdoor climate that is humid and cold, but not where it is drier and warmer. Difficulties in detecting moisture problems in the edge beam are pointed out by all informants and are justified by the inaccessibility of the construction. The parametric study confirms the observations to a certain extent, and indicates the risk of mold growth in most calculation cases. The risk of mold growth is affected to the greatest extent by parameter combinations that contribute to periods with temperatures above 5 C and relative humidity higher than 95 percent. Within structural floors in wood-frame houses, it is important to reduce moisture transport towards the edge beam. At the same time the construction should support transportation of air to keep the humidity as low as possible. This is achieved by using a non-vapor resistant edge beam material, for example an 18 mm OSB board, which is retracted 5 cm. By using an additional vertical barrier layer next to the edge beam insulation, the risk of mold growth will most likely be reduced to an acceptable level. The vertical barrier layer can either be a type of bridging or a vapor retarder

The future climate changes caused by the global warming can have a dramatic consequence for the built environment. The future climate changes will most likely lead to a wetter, warmer and more extreme weather over the next 100 years. Moisture damages or the influence of moisture stands for approximately 75% of all the building damages. It is therefore important to think about local climate conditions during project planning and execution of buildings. Especially in Norway where the climate is strongly affected by variations between the different regions due to the country’s geographical conditions. The purpose of the master thesis is to look at how the esthetic challenges and moisture damages will arise for larger buildings due to the execution of façade details and if the recommendations have been followed or not. The recommendations that are being looked into are limited to regard grime on the facades and the distance to the ground. Since Byggforsk is known to have some rigid recommendations, it will be looked into whether some of the recommendations should be adjusted more to the local climate conditions. A field study has been carried out in Trondheim and Bergen on the total of 83 buildings, where 42 buildings are in Trondheim and 41 in Bergen. The field study was carried out by walking around and looking for ’’mistakes’’. Thereafter, a visual survey was done by the help of a camera and a folding rule. A registration form was filled out for each building after the survey. The registration forms are in the appendix but can also be read separately. From the field study one could find that the main difference between Trondheim and Bergen is the amount of algae that grows on the buildings. Bergen has significantly more algae on the facades, along the ground and on the flashing below the windows. Some of the reason behind the amount of growth in Bergen is the mild coastal climate, and the fact that it will often be moisture available in the air because of the sea air and amount of precipitation. When filling out the registration forms it was discovered that some recommendations should get another wording, some should get more content and for other cases recommendations should be made. The grime on the facades was mostly visible as traces on the walls followed by algae. The most iterative cause for the traces was the construction of the flashing, which is also mentioned in Byggforskserien. Byggforsk have a general recommendation for all ventilated claddings regarding the construction of the drip edge. This has led to challenges for new types of claddings that have other characteristics than traditional wood cladding and sheet cladding. Different solutions for the flashing was discovered for metal sheets that can oxidize, but none of them looked particular suitable for the claddings of brown patinated cobber cladding or corten steel cladding. Hence a recommendation for oxidizing metal sheet claddings should be created to make it easier to avoid flashings that will result in aesthetically unsightly appearance. It is also recommended to look at the choice of words and recommendations for all claddings regarding the edge against the structural reveal for windows and valves. This is because it has often been traces below the windows and valves due to the design. For the distance to the ground it was discovered that it should be some local adjustments to limit the amount of biological growth for ventilated claddings. In Bergen it was often discovered that the algae were growing high up on the cladding from the ground. In several cases the algae were noticed growing up to around 400mm from the ground. In other cases, the algae were often growing 50mm higher than the recommended distance to the ground. These findings indicate that the recommendation for the distance to the ground should be increased to avoid biological growth for climates equivalent to the one in Bergen. Due to the growth up to around 400mm and the expected wetter weather, it is recommended to adjust the recommendation up from 300mm to 400mm. Byggforsk also have contradictory recommendations about the minimum distance to the ground when certain demands are fulfilled. In Trondheim the algae often grows up to around 100mm, and therefore it is recommended that the minimum recommendations are altered to be the same, 150mm. This is also based on the fact that the minimum recommendation is more often used than the recommendation at 300mm, even if the requirement for 100/150mm is not fulfilled
