Getatchew Haile - Ethiopian Studies in Honour of Amha Asfaw

    No full text

Rebecca Haile – a New Star in the Ethiopian Literary Firmament

    No full text
It is rather difficult to determine the genre of the book "Held at a distance: my rediscovery of Ethiopia" by Rebecca Haile – it is part travelogue, part history, part memoir but reads like an autobiographical novel. The story is about a young Ethiopian woman who in 1976 was forced to flee to the United States of America with her family during Ethiopia’s “Red Terror”. Rebecca grew up in Minnesota where her father, professor Getatchew Haile worked at St. John’s Col-lege as a scientist. After 25 years in the USA Rebecca decided to return to her native country and her visit dislodges so many Western stereotypes of Africa. She admires the great cultural heritage of the ancient times, respects its history and rich civilization. Her insight into Ethiopia is so unique that it reveals her to us as a very talented young writer

A Short Apocalyptic Text Based on the Prophecy of Ezra (Esdras Salathiel)

    No full text
The main themes of the text, occasionally ascribed to Ezra (Salathiel), are the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, the end of the world, the future rulers of Ethiopia, and the honouring of the Sabbaths. It is cast in the spirit of 4 Ezra, quoting it and Jubilees occasionally and extensively. As in 4 Ezra, its author is interested in knowing and declaring the future to call the faithful to observe the law and the ordinances. Reckoning the time by cycles, aqmar, provides him the revelation of future events ‘with exact dates’. The text, composed before the sixteenth century, is one more source of Gǝʿǝz apocalyptic literature. The article is an edition and translation of it as preserved in EMML 6429, fols 9v–39r

Towards a theory of quantum integrability in finite size systems

    No full text
We study general quantum integrable Hamiltonians linear in a coupling constant and represented by finite NxN real symmetric matrices. The restriction on the coupling dependence leads to a natural notion of nontrivial integrals of motion and classification of integrable families into Types according to the number of such integrals. A Type M family in our definition is formed by N-M nontrivial mutually commuting operators linear in the coupling. Working from this definition alone, we parameterize Type M operators, i.e. resolve the commutation relations, and obtain an exact solution for their eigenvalues and eigenvectors. We show that our parameterization covers all Type 1, 2, and 3 integrable models and discuss the extent to which it is complete for other types. We also present robust numerical observation on the number of energy level crossings in Type M integrable systems and analyze the taxonomy of types in the 1d Hubbard model.Ph. The article presents a collation and translation of an apocalyptic text, which may be titled, Conversation of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus with His Twelve Apostle Disciples at Jericho, as taken from EMML 7229, fols 93r–109r. It is one of the two conversations known so far (the other took place at Däbrä Zäyt) and, although copied in the same hand, this conversation cannot be considered a part of the traditional Nägärä Maryam
