Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Organizational Justice and Workplace Deviance Behavior: Evidence from University of Gondar
Employees in many institutions show different deviant behaviors due to the existence of injustice in their work environment. Research suggests that employees who perceive injustice in their workplace are more likely to engage in workplace deviance behavior. Distributive, procedural, and interpersonal justices are the main elements of the justice behavior. If an organization fails to satisfy these elements, it is proved that there is an indication of injustice. Therefore, the aim of this study is examine the effect of organizational justice on workplace deviance behavior in the study area. To achieve this objective, an explanatory with cross sectional research design was carried out to investigate the relationship and effect between organizational justice and workplace deviant behavior. The total population of the study was 120 academic and 37 administrative staff in which 30 of the academic staff were excluded for they were on a study leave. For this reason, 104 questionnaires were distributed and out of which 103 questionnaires were returned and used for the analysis purpose. One questionnaire was incomplete and the remaining 23 questionnaires were not distributed because of the inaccessibility of respondents during data collection period, hence excluded from the study. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 21 and the finding of the correlation analysis indicated that organizational justice elements were negatively correlated with workplace deviance behavior. Similarly, the regression analysis result tells us that procedural and distributive justices were a negative and insignificant effect on workplace deviant behavior but the interpersonal justices were a negative and significant effect on the outcome variabl
Investigating quality service and student satisfaction: evidence from College of Business & Economics, University of Gondar, Ethiopia
Abstract Providing quality service is the major concern of many public organizations. However, the way to provide immediate service (responsiveness), the capacity to deliver on promises of accurate and consistent service (reliability), the degree of trust and confidence of students in the service provided by the college (assurance), the physical appearances of the service that the college offers (tangibility) and understanding the needs of students in the college are not as such potential. Thus, the study aims to investigate the effect of a quality service system on student satisfaction in Business and Economics College, University of Gondar. An explanatory research design with a quantitative research approach was employed to address the specified objectives. The population of the study was 6323 and out of these, 376 samples were drawn through stratified random sampling technique. Of 376 self-administer questionnaires, 263 were valuable for this analysis. One of the objectives of the study was to understand the dominant service quality dimension. The finding of the mean score of SERVQUAL dimensions portrays that students are less satisfied with dimension responsiveness (M = 2.31), which implies that the way students get an immediate response for their need showed very low followed by dimension empathy (M = 2.63) i.e., the willingness of staff to support or help students, spontaneous care and concern of staff to student’s needs, is lower, whereas with tangibles, assurance, and reliability are better. The PLS-SEM analysis result confirmed that tangibility and assurance has a significant effect but other service quality dimensions are not
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Locus of Control and Its Effect on Entrepreneurial Development among Final Year Students of College of Business & Economics
The aim of this study was to investigate locus of control and its effect on entrepreneurial development of students of College of Business and Economics. The total population of the study was 955 final year undergraduate students and the required data, extracted from 237 questionnaires, were analyzed through SPSS version 21. Proportional stratified sampling was used to select the sample respondents. One of the objectives of this study was investigating the level of locus of control of final year students. The finding indicated that all the items of locus of control were beyond the cutoff points. This implies that many of the behaviors of the students were in the internal perceived locus of control (M=3.5585). This is to mean that everything has carried out under own control rather than created by chance and opportunities. In addition, the mean score of entrepreneurial development was 3.4, which was far from the minimum cutoff points (2.5). This implies that students are exhibiting somehow good entrepreneurial development. The Pearsons correlation analysis notified that internal locus of control has a significant relationship with entrepreneurship development (r=. 389, p<. 05) and its external locus of control also shows a significant relationship between the two variables at r=.292, p><0.05). The developed hypothesizes was also tested by using regression analysis and its result revealed that internal locus of control has statistically significant effect with students’ entrepreneurial development (β=0.355, t=6.039, p><0.001) and its external locus of control has a positive and significant effect with entrepreneurial development (β=242, t=4.114,p><.05
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
