Efficiency, Welfare, and Altruism : Moral Assumptions in Economic Theory and Practice
This book focuses on two themes: how efficiency is treated in economic theory and how ethics is dealt with in economic practice. Carl-Henric Grenholm argues that economic theory might contribute to a needed revision of mainstream economic theory. Gert Helgesson analyses different efficiency concepts within mainstream economics. The main issue is how Pareto efficiency is related to values, norms, and ideology.Pareto efficiency and welfare is dealt with in another article by Gert Helgesson. The central problem here is whether the Pareto principle should be applied for practical purposes in the real world. Helgesson argues that it should not.Roland Granqvist deals with the problems related to the potential Pareto principle. His thesis is that some kinds of altruism should be included in cost-benefit analysis, e.g. concerns for other persons´health and safety. In another article, Roland Granqvist and Hans Lind discuss the "excess burden" of taxes. They argue that the general concept of excess burden has been operationalised in a questionable way. Finally, two articles deal with moral values and ethical convictions in economic practice.</p

Ethics, Economics, and Feminism
This volume focuses on the contributions of feminist theory to a critical evaluation of neoclassical economics and the contributions of economic theory to ethical reflection. Julie Nelson argues that women and nature share a similar treatment in neoclassical economics. They are made invisible or pushed into the background. John Broome argues that formal techniques used in economics can contribute to ethical theory.Five articles give outlines of studies on ethics and economics. Per Sundman makes a critical analysis of a neo-Aristotelian approach to the managerial role in business ethics. Gert Helgesson discusses ethical preconditions in economic theory. Malin Löfstedt deals with the neoclassical view of humans, Ann-Cathrin Jarl writes about the conceprions of equality in feminist economics, and Carl-Åke Elmersjö deals with economic analysis in health care.</p
Ideology in Science and Economics
The main topic of this volume of "Studies in Ethics and Economics" is the role of ideology in science and economics. Mikael Stenmark discusses the place of ideology in science, and Hans Larsson argues that there are implicit assumptions in economic theory which can facilitate its use for ideological purposes.Gert Helgesson tries to clarify what economists mean by "theory" and "model", and Göran Collste discusses what it means to formulate ethical principles for making priorities in health care. Per Sundman analyses different ways of applying the notion of democratic legitimacy in the context of business corporations, and Mikael Lindfelt argues for a virue ethical approach to professional ethics.</p
Responsibility for scientific misconduct in collaborative papers
This paper concerns the responsibility of co-authors in cases of scientific misconduct. Arguments in research integrity guidelines and in the bioethics literature concerning authorship responsibilities are discussed. It is argued that it is unreasonable to claim that for every case where a research paper is found to be fraudulent, each author is morally responsible for all aspects of that paper, or that one particular author has such a responsibility. It is further argued that it is more constructive to specify what task responsibilities come with different roles in a project and describe what kinds of situations or events call for some kind of action, and what the appropriate actions might be
