I had the opportunity to attend the 1994 American Geriatrics Society (AGS)/American Federation For Ageing Research(AFAR) joint annual scientific meeting, May 19-22, in Los Angeles. It brought together geriatricians from all over the world: USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Israel, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong. The program was heavily scheduled with parallel sessions, providing updated information on the current trends in geriatrics and gerontology. This article is a report of the advances in topics attended by the author: molecular and cellular basis of ageing; cardiovascular diseases; hypertension; heart failure; dyslipidaemia; thromboembolic disorders; clinical practice guidelines; geriatrician’s role in primary care, long-term care and acute care.published_or_final_versio

Dr. Marjory Warren: The Mother of Geriatrics

No full text
Marjory Warren (1897 - 1960) was a person with innovation and dynamism. Her work was missionary and her proposals visionary. She was a surgeon to start with, and yet she created geriatrics out of medicine. She advocated practising geriatrics as a specialist, and yet she emphasized the importance of generalist training. She argued for having separate wards with environment and caring process appropriate for elderly patients, but she insisted that these wards should be an integral part of a general hospital with equal access to diagnostic and therapeutic facilities. She was thankful that she was not distracted by fame during her early endeavours so that she could quietly build up this special branch of medicine. Her concern for human life, not only for the unwanted and unfittest elderly patients but also for her passengers, ended up in her tragic death in a car accident at the age of 62. Her work continues to influence and inspire those who share her conviction that elderly people deserve the best care.published_or_final_versio

A workshop for interprofessional trainees using the geriatrics 5Ms framework [online ahead of print]

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Interprofessional trainees need geriatrics training to prepare them to care for our aging population. Team‐based care will help them be ready to work in an Age‐Friendly Health System. The Geriatrics 5Ms provides a framework to engage learners in five main domains of caring for older adults from an interprofessional perspective: Mobility, Mind, Medications, Multicomplexity, and what Matters Most. DESIGN We created a half‐day workshop for interprofessional trainees using the Geriatric 5Ms framework to increase their preparedness in caring for older adults as part of an interprofessional team. SETTING The New England Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center. PARTICIPANTS A total of 66 trainees from 10 professions. INTERVENTION After introductory sessions on careers in aging, participants engaged in an interactive session to learn about the professions represented. They then formed interprofessional groups to discuss a patient case using the Geriatrics 5Ms framework with a modified jigsaw format. MEASUREMENTS Trainees were surveyed before and after the workshop on their attitudes toward careers in aging, understanding of skills and training paths of other professions, and familiarity with the Geriatrics 5Ms framework. RESULTS Overall, 97% of the trainees rated the workshop highly. Trainee ratings significantly increased in the areas of understanding of other professions, and familiarity and applicability of the Geriatrics 5Ms, particularly for nonphysicians. CONCLUSION A workshop for interprofessional trainees using the Geriatrics 5Ms framework increased the readiness of trainees to care for older adults as part of an interprofessional team. This workshop offers a promising model for needed interprofessional geriatrics education.VA Boston Healthcare Syste

This new open access edition supported by the Fragility Fracture Network aims at giving the widest possible dissemination on fragility fracture (especially hip fracture) management and notably in countries where this expertise is sorely needed. It has been extensively revised and updated by the experts of this network to provide a unique and reliable content in one single volume. Throughout the book, attention is given to the difficult question of how to provide best practice in countries where the discipline of geriatric medicine is not well established and resources for secondary prevention are scarce. The revised and updated chapters on the epidemiology of hip fractures, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, surgery, anaesthesia, medical management of frailty, peri-operative complications, rehabilitation and nursing are supplemented by six new chapters. These include an overview of the multidisciplinary approach to fragility fractures and new contributions on pre-hospital care, treatment in the emergency room, falls prevention, nutrition and systems for audit. The reader will have an exhaustive overview and will gain essential, practical knowledge on how best to manage fractures in elderly patients and how to develop clinical systems that do so reliably

Geriatrics studies in Nigeria: systematic review and quality assessment protocol

No full text
INTRODUCTION: Geriatrics, a specialized medical branch focusing on the health and well-being of older individuals, has gained increasing attention due to the global demographic shift towards an aging population. Despite the significant growth of the older adult population in Nigeria, limited empirical studies hinder the translation of research findings into health and well-being improvements for older adults in the region. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review will synthesize geriatrics research conducted in Nigeria over the past 6 decades, identifying temporal patterns and research priorities. METHODS: Four electronic databases will be searched to identify studies from published and grey literature on geriatrics in Nigeria between 1960 and 2023 and will be reviewed from inception to 2023: PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and African Journal Online. The population of interest is older adults aged ≥60 years. The review team comprises primary investigators, content experts, and a subject librarian. Data extraction and analysis will be conducted independently by review authors, and statistical analysis will be performed by experts. EXPECTED RESULTS: Depending on the results, we anticipate that this systematic review will help clarify the state of geriatrics studies and services in Nigeria. RELEVANCE: The review will fill research gaps to inform policy directives and interventions in geriatric care by developing evidence-based clinical and policy documents to improve the health and well-being of older adults in Nigeria.</p
