No full textFrancesco Petrarca trascorse buona parte della propria esistenza sotto la protezione di cardinali e di signori laici. A partire dal suo apprendistato presso la corte cardinalizia dei Colonna ebbe modo di ampliare progressivamente le sue competenze curiali e politiche, partecipando ad importanti missioni diplomatiche (talora in veste di oratore) e mettendo la propria abilità di epistolografo al servizio dei sui domini. I signori dell’Italia settentrionale, a partire da Giacomo II da Carrara, mostrarono di considerare il dotto chierico, ben introdotto in Curia ed apprezzato da una schiera di giuristi appartenenti ai ranghi delle amministrazioni signorili, una figura capace di conferire prestigio a chi se ne facesse ospite e protettore. Nell’ampia produzione letteraria di Petrarca, inoltre, sono presenti componimenti poetici di carattere encomiastico, che si affiancano a numerosi passi e lettere dedicati ad una frammentaria ma significativa trattazione de principe. Alcune tra le sue opere più importanti, infine, sono dedicate ai signori e mettono in campo una tematizzazione del rapporto tra poeta e mecenate di stampo classico destinata ad un’ampia fortuna nei due secoli seguenti. A partire da tali vistosi dati biografici e letterari, il volume prende in esame il rapporto tra Petrarca e le corti, articolando la materia in tre capitoli.
Il primo capitolo (“Petrarca da commensalis a diplomatico”) prende in esame la carriera cortigiana di Petrarca, di cui si indagano le diverse fasi e le caratteristiche di fondo, seguendo i primi passi in qualità di comensalis di Giovanni Colonna; la progressiva autonomia nei confronti della famiglia romana garantita dal patronage di Clemente VI; il trasferimento in Italia e i soggiorni a Milano, Venezia e Padova. Nell’analisi di tutte e tre le fasi emerge l’importanza rivestita dai perduranti rapporti con protettori in Curia.
Il secondo capitolo (“Petrarca, le corti, i signori”) prende in esame i passi dedicati nell’epistolario e nelle altre opere petrarchesche alla vita nelle corti, dalle testimonianze di carattere autobiografico in merito alle missioni diplomatiche e al soggiorno presso i domini sino alle lettere rivolte a delineare l’educazione di un giovane sovrano (Fam. XII 2), le caratteristiche del condottiero ideale (Sen. IV), il ritratto del perfetto princeps (Sen. XIV 1, Rem. I 15-42).
Il terzo capitolo (“La produzione letteraria e le corti. Dediche e testi d’occasione”), infine, si concentra su due aspetti che tengono insieme il dato biografico e la produzione letteraria: la ricognizione sull’insieme dei testi poetici occasionali, in latino e in volgare, riconducibili ad un’effettiva partecipazione alla vita cortigiana; lo studio delle dediche di diverse opere letterarie, volte a suscitare un mecenatismo in molti casi piuttosto sognato che effettivo. Il primo paragrafo prende in esame il corpus in questione suddividendolo per generi (testi all’improvviso, epitaffi, carmina e poesie volgari) e destinatari. Il percorso che ne deriva mostra la frequenza, nella prima fase della carriera cortigiana di Petrarca, del ricorso all’omaggio poetico. Allo stesso tempo emergono alcune costanti tematiche, come la pratica dell’invio di simbolici doni campestri e l’invito al signore nel locus amoenus. L’attenzione al paesaggio e il tema oraziano del soggiorno in villa sono funzionali ad evidenziare il nesso tra otium e protezione offerta dai signori. La parte restante del capitolo prende in esame la dedica di tre opere (Africa, De Remediis, De viris illustribus) ad altrettanti domini. Nei paragrafi in questione, la storia compositiva e la struttura delle singole opere sono messe in relazione con il rapporto di Petrarca con i diversi dedicatari: Roberto d’Angiò, Azzo da Correggio, Francesco da Carrara. Il quadro che emerge è quello di una raffinata tematizzazione dei rapporti tra literatus e dominus che più che riflettere le pratiche del tempo delinea i tratti di un mecenatismo ideale. La pratica della dedica diviene allora l’occasione per immaginare una futura rinascita del rapporto tra cesari e poeti praticato nell’età augustea

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
