No full textThis is the first of a pair of beautifully printed paperbound volumes I discovered among my books now in 2005. When and how did I get them? I can only guess. There is a $9 price tag on each from Kinokuniya with a San Jose telephone number. Were they perhaps a gift of Rafael Sakurai? As for the book itself, its dust-jacket has beautifully colored Ulm woodcuts of The Hawk and the Pigeons and of the man chopping down a tree (to get an axe-handle, I presume), with half of a beautiful peacock on the spine. Inside, the book moves from what we would call the back to the front with a succession of beautiful Ulm images, starting with FG on 11 and recurring every four to eight pages. The beginning T of C indicates that there are one-hundred-and-eighty-four fables on 221 pages. What a lovely pair of books!Language note: JapaneseLee Coope

No full textHere is the third generation of Dover's lovely coloring book. The price has gone up from 2.50 to $2.75. It will go up at least once more in my history of collecting it. As I mentioned about the original publication, the book is valuable because of the nicely enlarged and clear Ulm drawings. The format seems unchanged from that in the second generation

No full textThis is the second of a pair of beautifully printed paperbound volumes I discovered among my books now in 2005. When and how did I get them? I can only guess. As for the book itself, its dust-jacket has beautifully colored Ulm woodcuts of the eagle carrying the tortoise and the wolves asking the shepherd to get rid of the dogs, with the second half of a beautiful peacock on the spine. Inside, the book moves from what we would call the back to the front with a succession of beautiful Ulm images, starting with LM on 11 and recurring every four to twelve pages. The beginning T of C seems to indicate that there are one-hundred-and-seventy-two fables on 223 pages, followed by an essay on Aesop on 224, complete with both Ulm's title-picture and Velasquez' painting of Aesop. On 229, there is an indication of Chambry's 1960 edition, and that may well be what is translated here. What a lovely pair of books!Language note: JapaneseLee Coope

As I mentioned about the original publication, the book is valuable because of the nicely enlarged and clear Ulm drawings. The format finds a bar code added on the bottom right-hand of the back cover with the ISBN printed in relation to it. The verso of the title-page also adds Canadian and UK publishers and notes the inclusion of the work in Dover's Pictorial Archive Series
Untersuchung möglicher Ursachen eines "Refractive Surprise" nach Katarakt-Operation mit Standardverfahren und zusätzlicher Bildgebung mittels Visante-OCT
No full textDie Kataraktoperation ist heute durch die operationstechnischen Weiterentwicklungen ein wenig invasiver Eingriff. Im gleichen Maße ist der Anspruch an das postoperative Ergebnis gestiegen. Ein stärkeres Abweichen der postoperativen Refraktion von der Zielrefraktion – der sog. „refractive surprise“ – kann trotz optimalen chirurgischen Ergebnisses die Zufriedenheit des Patienten stark mindern. Ziel dieser Studie war es daher zu evaluieren, ob es Merkmale des Patientenauges gibt, welche bereits vor der Operation auf ein Auftreten eines „refractive surprise“ hindeuten.
In der vorliegenden Studie wurden prospektiv die Daten von 53 Patienten mit insgesamt 61 Augen erfasst, die sich in den Jahren 2010/2011 einer Kataraktoperation mittels Phakoemulsifikation und Implantation einer Hinterkammerlinse an der Universitätsaugenklinik Ulm unterzogen. Neben einer augenärztlichen Basisuntersuchung einschließlich Refraktion, Druckmessung, Biomikroskopie und Ophthalmoskopie wurde eine Biometrie des Auges bestehend aus Messung der Achslänge, Hornhautbrechkraft und Vorderkammertiefe durchgeführt. Zusätzlich zu diesen präoperativen Standarduntersuchungen im Rahmen eines solchen Eingriffs wurden prä- und postoperativ Messungen zur Darstellung des vorderen Augenabschnitts sowie der makulären Schichtung durchgeführt.
Ein „refractive surprise“ trat in dieser Studie in knapp 20 % der Fälle auf. Keiner der erhobenen Parameter zeigte einen statistisch signifikanten Zusammenhang zum Auftreten eines „refractive surprise“.
Nach Datenlage dieser Studie ist es zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt dem Operateur nicht möglich, mit den hier durchgeführten Untersuchungen Risikopatienten für ein Verfehlen der Zielrefraktion bereits vor der Operation zu identifiziere

No full textThe brochure advertising the facsimile edition of Steinhöwel's Aesopus: Vita et Fabulae Ulm 1476 from Edition Libri Illustri Verlag mentioned a 16-page set of documentation available for DM 75. Here it is! Contents include a two-sided loose sample page (Book III, Fable XI, The Father and Wild Son and the beginning of De Thaide et iuvene); a black-and-white rendition of the title-page woodcut of Aesop surrounded by the symbols of his life; a letter from Peter Teicher, the publisher, describing the original copy worked from and the overall project; sections on the history of fable, Aesop's fables, Aesop, Heinrich Steinhöwel, Johannes Zainer, Ulm, the Ulm Woodcutter, Otto Schäfer's private collection, and facsimile-creation with the most modern technology. A window-page follows with five rectangles cut open for viewing of the next page. Each of these quandrangles highlights a feature of the publication: the Latin title; all damaged portions, bruised, and marks faithfully represented; the woodcuts faithfully reproduced; frequent initials; and the readable type that Steinhöwel used. The inside of the back cover is then what we have been viewing through these windows, in this case Fable XII of Book Four, featuring The Lion and the Foxes. No full textBeeinflusst das intraoperative Morcellement eines Uterussarkoms das krankheitsfreie Überleben und das Gesamtüberleben?
Zielsetzung: Aufgrund symptomatischer Leiomyome werden Hysterektomien immer häufiger mithilfe minimalinvasiver Operationstechniken durchgeführt. Wird ein Sarkom morcelliert, besteht das Risiko einer Dissemination maligner Zellen. Das Ziel dieser retrospektiven Studie war zu analysieren, ob ein intraoperatives Morcellement das krankheitsfreie Überleben und das Gesamtüberleben von Patientinnen mit Uterussarkomen beeinflusst.
Methoden: Aus dem Behandlungszeitraum 2002 - 2015 wurden 57 Patientinnen ab 18 Jahren mit der Diagnose eines Uterussarkoms (n=38) oder Karzinosarkoms (n=19) eingeschlossen, welche sich als initiale Operation einer Hysterektomie unterzogen. Aufgrund seines klinisch sehr aggressiven Verhaltens wurde das Karzinosarkom miteinbezogen. Es wurden medizinische Daten, die der Frauenklinik und dem Krebsregister der Universität Ulm entstammen, pseudoanonym evaluiert. Das “uterine Morcellement“ beinhaltete das Morcellieren mithilfe eines Skalpells oder eine intraabdominale Tumorverletzung während abdominaler, vaginaler oder laparoskopischer Eingriffe. Verglichen wurden zwei Gruppen: Gruppe M- (ohne Morcellement; n=44) mit Gruppe M+ (mit Morcellement; n=13).
Ergebnisse: Es gab keine signifikanten Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Gruppen bezüglich des histologischen Subtyps, Nodalstatus, Gradings, Östrogen-und Progesteronstatus, BMI, Radio- und Chemotherapie. Allerdings waren Unterschiede betreffend das Alter, Tumordurchmesser, Metastasen- und Residualtumorstatus, Operationsmethoden, ASA-Score und das Follow-up zu erkennen. Für insgesamt 35,1% der Patientinnen konnte die Diagnose bereits präoperativ gestellt werden. Die Rezidivrate lag bei 58,8%. Das mediane krankheitsfreie Überleben bzw. Gesamtüberleben aller Patientinnen belief sich auf 25 bzw. 45 Monate. Es fand sich eine leichte Tendenz eines kürzeren krankheitsfreien Überlebens in Gruppe M+ im Gegensatz zur Gruppe M- (Log-Rank: p=0,061). Gruppe M+ wies ein signifikant kürzeres Gesamtüberleben (Log-Rank: p=0,008) und ein 3-fach höheres Rezidivrisiko auf als Gruppe M- (HR: 3,06; 95%-KI: 0,88 – 10,65; p=0,079). Letzteres zeigte sich jedoch als nicht signifikant.
Zusammenfassung: Dringend benötigt werden zuverlässige präoperative Diagnostiken, um Eingriffe wie das Morcellement weiterhin durchführen zu können ohne Patientinnen mit Uterussarkomen zusätzlich zu gefährden. Hierzu besteht die Notwendigkeit größere Studien zu erstellen, um ein evidenzbasiertes Outcome zu erhalten
