Product Lifecycle Management Challenges of CPPS

    No full text
In the chapter Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Challenges of CPPS, data and information management issues arising from the advanced use of modern product development and engineering methods are addressed. These advanced methods are required for engineering processes of smart systems and individualized products with high complexity and variability. Emphasis is put on challenges of the life-cycle oriented information integration of products and the respective Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS). Furthermore, the chapter addresses data and information management problems coming from integration of the use and operation phase of products and systems in terms of forward and backward information flows. In the chapter Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Challenges of CPPS, data and information management issues arising from the advanced use of modern product development and engineering methods are addressed. The Internet of Things and Services opens new perspectives for goods and value-added services in various industrial sectors. Engineering of industrial products and of industrial production systems is a multi-disciplinary, model- and data-driven engineering process, which involves engineers coming from several engineering disciplines. These engineering disciplines exploit a variety of engineering tools and information processing systems. This book discusses challenges and solutions for the required information processing and management capabilities within the context of multi-disciplinary engineering of production systems. The authors consider methods, architectures, and technologies applicable in use cases according to the viewpoints of product engineering and production system engineering, and regarding the triangle of (1) the product to be produced by (2) a production process executed on (3) a production system resource. This chapter motivates the need for better approaches to multi-disciplinary engineering (MDE) for cyber-physical production systems (CPPS) and provides background information for non-experts to explain the interaction between production engineering, production systems engineering, and enabling contributions from informatics. Furthermore, the chapter introduces a set of research questions and provides an overview on the book structure, chapter contributions, and benefits to the target audiences

We classify the uniserial infinitesimal unipotent commutative groups of finite representation type over algebraically closed fields. As an application we provide detailed information on the structure of those infinitesimal groups whose distribution algebras have a representation-finite principal block

Securing the state, undermining democracy: internationalization and privatization of western militaries

Changes in the field of security since the 1990s triggered off a number of still continuing military transformations in liberal democracies. Since their armed forces were designed for the purposes of the bipolar Cold war security constellation, they have been “redesigned” according to the new tasks as agreed upon in the new NATO strategic concepts or the assignments for the Europeanized forces within the European Union: Conflict prevention, crisis intervention, counter-terrorism have been added to the range of deployment missions. This recent transformation of the armed forces is pushed ahead in the political spirit of new public management well known from other policy areas in the OECD countries. The proclaimed reforms are guided by efficiency and effectiveness principles only, issues of democratic control and integration of the armed forces into the society are marginalized in the political discourse. But integration and cooperation within international organizations is only one of the two trends detrimental to democratic control of the military; increasing contracting with Private Security and Military Companies is the other. Contracting is intended to reduce political and financial costs and risks for Western governments. The authors argue that, in the long run, both trends of privatization and internationalization, though they seem to run into opposite directions from a purely etatist perspective, result in the joint effect of exacerbating democratic control and accountability of security policies. This point is illustrated by the employment of private military companies by the US government agencies and US military and the reform of the German armed forces.

Where Architecture Meets Biology: An Interview with Detlef Mertins

I began doing research on Mies van der Rohe in the early nineties, after Fritz Neumeyer had published his book The Artless World, (1994). Neumeyer foregrounds Mies\u27 library, the books that Mies read. He was also the first to collect all the things that Mies himself wrote. One of the things that I found very surprising was that Mies was a reader of science, and especially of biology in the 1920s. He had a collection of about 40 books by the botanist Raoul Francé, the author of Der Sanze als Erfinder ( The Plant as Inventor, 1920). This was surprising, for I had always thought of modernism as an architecture of technology rather than an architecture that was imbued with organic aspirations and ethos. One thought of organic architecture more in terms of biomorphic form; in the German context, one thought of Hugo Häring, but not the straight-up-and-down, orthogonal architecture that Mies developed, or his expression of structure

Rezension: Sack, Detlef (2019): Vom Staat zum Markt - Privatisierung aus politikwissenschaftlicher Sicht

The book by Detlef Sack provides a profound overview of the topic of "privatisation" from a political science perspective. First of all, different forms of privatisation are presented. Then the privatisation topic is placed in the context of political and economic theories. After an overview of the history of privatisation in Germany, Europe and selected countries in Africa and Asia, the author describes and analyses privatisation projects in various policy fields. He then points out the need for an effective regulatory regime for the privatisation of public tasks and services. In a next step, the economic, social and power-political effects of privatisation are outlined. Finally, current reactions to privatisation in the form of remunicipalisation and perspectives for further privatisation research in political science are presented. The book is characterized by a pleasant objectivity in dealing with a politically and scientifically often very controversially discussed topic and can therefore be recommended for reading to anyone interested in this subject

Application Scenarios of Blockchain Technology in Product Lifecycle Management

In recent years the term “blockchain” was shaped primarily by cryptocurrencies and financial speculation. The underlying concept as a combination of previously known mechanisms, which in their sum de facto form the term blockchain, is much less considered. The background of blockchain is a form of information system that differs in several ways in a fundamental way from many information systems currently in use. This includes, above all, de-centralization, the use of certain cryptographic mechanisms and the way in which participants interact with each other within the network. With a certain push of technology, the use of blockchain systems has now experienced a media caused upswing, but it should be noted that a lot of use cases are not clearly defined. In partic-ular, due to the novelty of the technology, the most diverse forms of blockchain systems are emerging, which in addition cannot always be clearly assigned to the corresponding application possibilities. The work on hand deals with the question, what benefits different blockchain systems could have in terms of application in an industrial environment. The consideration is not limited to individual aspects of the industry, but the entire product life cycle is considered. For this the various blockchain concepts are broken down to their base in order to provide a as complete as possible collection of the benefits and obstacles of blockchain technology. Under this perspective, existing and potential use cases are collected, and generic uses identified and categorized. Furthermore, concrete, self-developed use cases serve to illustrate how the technology can be used in the context of the product life cycle
