Properas extrorsum introrsus eundo : epiek en anti-epiek in de Ysengrimus
The Ysengrimus is a difficult poem that escapes all attempts of categorization. The traditional qualification as a ‘fable’ ignores its epic characteristics, whereas approaching it as an animal epic often does not take into account the play with epic conventions. This contribution points out several of these genre inconveniences, thus stressing the experimental and unconventional approach of the anonymous poet. In this paper its epic qualities are spelt out, but also the way the author undermines them. Typical for the poem is its intrinsic ambivalence that combines opposing qualities in such a way that they constantly seem to annihilate each other. The result is a work that reinvigorates Latin literature and initiated an entirely new literary tradition in the vernaculars
