    Individual vs. Group Decision Making : an Experiment on Dynamic Choice under Risk and Ambiguity

    This paper focuses on the comparison of individual and group decision making, in a stochastic inter-temporal problem in two decision environments, namely risk and ambiguity. Using a consumption/saving laboratory experiment, we investigate behaviour in four treatments: (1) individual choice under risk; (2) group choice under risk; (3) individual choice under ambiguity and (4) group choice under ambiguity. Comparing decisions within and between decision environments, we find an anti-symmetric pattern. While individuals are choosing on average closer to the theoretical optimal predictions, compared to groups in the risk treatments, groups tend to deviate less under ambiguity. Within decision environments, individuals deviate more when they choose under ambiguity, while groups are better planners under ambiguity rather than under risk. Our results extend the often observed pattern of individuals (groups) behaving more optimally under risk (ambiguity), to its dynamic dimension

    Luis Paret y Alcázar fue uno de los pintores españoles más notables de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Cuando el pintor cursaba sus estudios en la recién creada Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, el Infante don Luis, hermano menor del rey Carlos III, se fijó en él y lo tomó bajo su protección, posibilitándole una estancia de tres años de estudio en Roma. A su regreso empezó a trabajar como pintor de cámara del Infante. Entre los trabajos que se le encomendaron figuran los de los animales del Gabinete de Historia Natural que atesoraba su protector. En este estudio se abordan las relaciones entre el coleccionismo de carácter científico y el artístico en el siglo XVIII.Luis Paret y Alcázar was one of the most notable Spanish painters in the second half of the 18th century. When the painter was studying at the newly created San Fernando’s Academy of Fine Arts, the younger brother of King Carlos III, Infante don Luis, noticed him and took him under his protection, enabling him to stay for three years in Rome.When the painter came back to Spain, he began to work as a painter of the Infante's camera. Among the works entrusted to him are those of the animals of the Cabinet of Natural History treasured by his protector. In this study the relationships between collecting of a scientific and artistic nature in the eighteenth century are addressed

    Comparing behavior under risk and under ambiguity in a lifecycle experiment

    Experiments on intertemporal consumption typically show that people have difficulties in optimally solving such problems. Previous studies have focused on contexts in which agents are faced with risky future incomes and have to plan over long horizons. We present an experiment comparing decision making under certainty, risk, and ambiguity, over a shorter lifecycle. Results show that behavior in the ambiguity treatment is markedly different than in the risk condition and it is characterized by a significant pattern of under-consumption

    Are groups better planners than individuals? An experimental analysis

    We present the results of an experiment comparing group and individual planning in the domain of lifecycle consumption/saving decisions. Individual decision making is compared to two group treatments, which differ based on the presence of a rematching rule. We find that individuals and groups differ in how they solve the intertemporal consumption problem, but not in how they improve their consumption planning within a sequence. Individuals’ performance improves across sequences, groups without rematching perform approximately the same, while groups with rematching do significantly worse. Our main finding is that while groups perform better than individuals in the first sequence, this difference seems to disappear in the second lifecycle. Results show that in the second sequence groups in the rematching treatment deviate substantially more from optimum than groups that are left stable across sequences

    The books by Guillermo Cabrera Infante (1929-2005), “the only English author who wrote in Cuban”, not only stand out for their great humor and continual wordplay, but also for attempting to make resurge what he had to leave behind when he went into exile: his island, Cuba, and particularly Havana. His writing thus oscillates between the arbitrariness exposed in his puns and the endeavor to represent the absent. Like that – and with what I have called “eco-logics” of Cabrera Infante’s writing –, he succeeds in joining his obsession with playing with words by decomposing them and revealing their treacherous arbitrariness, with his stubborn effort to make them translate and represent his lost Havana. In this way, Cabrera Infante’s texts become palimpsests of the necessity to re-present, archive and safeguard that which is lost, while simultaneously ridiculing that very endeavor by connecting mockery and searching, joking and desperation.Los libros de Guillermo Cabrera Infante (1929-2005), “único escritor inglés que escribió en cubano”, no solo se destacan por su gran humor y sus constantes juegos de palabras; también son intentos de hacer renacer lo que con su exilio había dejado atrás: su isla, Cuba, y en especial La Habana. El legajo contiene: 1) un extracto certificado del registro parroquial de bautismos de Zultepec relativo a Lucas Mariano, hijo legítimo de don Felipe Martínez y doña Ángela Celedonia de Bretos; 2) una certificación clerical que declara que en Metepec, el 24 de abril de 1760, Lucas Mariano Agustín recibió el sacramento de la confirmación, identificando a sus padres y confirmando su condición de españoles y su vecindad en Toluca; 3) una petición de don Felipe Martínez y Pinto Infante y Ávila solicitando copias autenticadas de un privilegio real de armas concedido originalmente a su quinto abuelo, en la que afirma la limpieza de sangre de sí mismo, de su esposa difunta doña Celedonia Ángela de Bretos Rodríguez de Prado y de sus hijos; 4) la transcripción de un privilegio real de armas expedido en Madrid en 1538 por Carlos V y Juana I, por el cual se conceden armas a Juan Infante por sus servicios militares en Cuba y en la Nueva España; 5) cuatro testimonios de cuatro hombres de Toluca que declaran de manera uniforme la nobleza y limpieza de sangre de don Felipe Martínez, enfatizando reiteradamente que ni él, ni su esposa, ni sus descendientes —mencionando expresamente a doña María Anna Bernarda— tuvieron relación alguna con la Inquisición ni con “mala raza”; y 6) una autenticación oficial de autoridades y escribanos reales que afirma la validez jurídica del expediente.     In 1996, the Cuban writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante exposes his ars poetica: an exposition of reasons and a confession, the exercise of parody as a defining style, something that can be seen in all of his literary work. Based on Linda Hutcheon's postulates on parody, and in connection with the pastiches of Marcel Proust, the work of Bustrófedon is shown as a purgative and exorcising virtue for Cabrera Infante, where play, humour and “criticism in action” challenge established conventions and facilitate the entertainment of author and reader.En 1996, el escritor cubano Guillermo Cabrera Infante expone su ars poética: una exposición de motivos y una confesión, el ejercicio de la parodia como estilo definitorio, algo que se constata en el conjunto de su obra literaria.
