Complications and Recurrences after Excision and Reconstruction of Eyelid Tumours

    No full text
Introduction: The eyelids are a common site for skin tumours and account for 5–10% of all skin tumours. Treatment is mainly surgical and aims to preserve the anatomical structure of the eyelid, its function and not least its aesthetic appearance. Aim: Presentation of recurrence and complication rates of tumour-related eyelid surgery in a cohort of 450 tumours. Results: Analysis of a cohort of 450 tumours operated on revealed 13 (2.8%) operations with recurrences and 32 (7%) with complications. The statistical significance of recurrences was observed for the involved and uninvolved ciliary margin. At the temporal canthus, 23.1% of recurrences occurred compared to 7.7% at the medial canthus. SGC has the highest recurrence rate. Complications include the following: ectropion, dehiscence, gross cicatrix with normal function, retraction, post-radiation damage, sub-graft haemorrhage and graft rejection. Conclusions: The recurrence rate of eyelid tumours is lower than that of complications. The choice of surgical technique determines the frequency of complications and histological control of the excised tissue, as well as the frequency of recurrences

WIES VS. JONES PROCEDURE FOR ENTROPION: YOUNG OPHTHALMOLOGISTS LEARNING CURVE

Entropion is a common eyelid disease with various etiologies that represents a change in the position of the eyelid, in which the edge is turned inward towards the eyeball. If left untreated, entropion can lead to several eye diseases. Aim: We compared two possible entropion reconstruction options; the Wies and Jons procedures, performed by young ophthalmologists under supervision. Methods: We selected 30 well-documented cases of patients operated > 3 years previously and followed for ≥ 2 years; 15 patients operated with the Wies technique and 15 with the Jones technique. The total operative time and learning curve of young ophthalmologists were observed and compared. Results: We compared the degree of entropion correction, cosmetic outcomes, and recurrence for up to two years. As a cosmetic result, our observations demonstrated the advantages of the Wies technique. In the Jones procedure, plication caused slight thickening of the lower eyelid below the operative incision, making the operative cicatrix more visible. There were two cases of relapse with Wies and none with Jones during the first year. Conclusion: Both techniques were applied for entropion correction. However, the Weis technique was suitable for manifest cases of entropion because it showed greater entropion reduction and better aesthetic postoperative results and was the method of choice for reoperation for the same disease. Young ophthalmologists adopted the Wies procedure much faster than did Jones

Eyelid tumors in children over a 10-year period

Introduction: Eyelid tumors in children are rare and, fortunately, mostly benign. Reconstruction after excision of these tumors is an extremely responsible procedure, considering the early age of the patient. Aim: To analyze the incidence and location of malignant and benign tumors in children up to 18 years of age over a period of 10 years. Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 29 eyes from a cohort of 450 eyes with tumors operated on in our clinic between 2010 and 2019. Of all tumors of the eye and adnexa, only tumors of the eyelids were considered. All tumors were histopathologically examined after their surgical removal. Results: Eyelid tumors in children account for 6.4% of the tumors studied in all age groups, and 0.2% of them are malignant. The ratio of women to men is 62% to 38%, with most of them residing in cities. The most common eyelid tumors in children are cysts (47%), followed by papillomas (17%) and nevi (10%). The distribution on the eyelid is as follows: medially located 31%, centrally 45% and temporally 24%. Conclusion: Eyelid tumors in children prefer the female sex. Malignant tumors of the eyelids are rare. The average size of tumors is about 4-6 mm. The duration of the disease directly correlates with the size of the tumor. For tumors of the lower eyelid, a doctor is consulted earlier than for tumors of the upper eyelid. Inflammatory reaction around the tumor is more common in the right eye

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
