Letter From: P.S. Shields, New Albany, October 5, 1874 To: George Winter ALS, 4 p. (one sheet, folded) (with typed transcription)Acknowledging G.W. letter of September 18, requesting Shields' memories of his father's statements about the Battle of Tippecanoe. U.S. Army arrived near Prophet's Town the day before the battle. Indians invited a small squad, including General Harrison, to town for a friendly talk in the afternoon. During the talk, Indians took up offensive positions. Despite the Indians' suggestion of another talk in the morning, Harrison expected them to attack during the night and so mounted a heavy guard. Due to a dark and rainy night, the Indians slipped past the sentries, giving the soldiers little time to form up before they were attacked. His father's line was attacked three times, each charge accompanied by a yell, and tomahawks were thrown. A nearby company retreated, pursued by Indians, but managed to kill some and drive them back. Harrison moved about, encouraging his troops. The Indians were routed by a charge after dawn. The battle took two hours, twenty minutes; 43 U.S. soldiers and 53 Indians were dead on the ground. Burial of the dead; shortage of provisions

A letter describing the requirements for Rosemary Snook's parents of Bournemouth, England, to approve their 18-year-old daughter's marriage to George Fisher, an American soldier during World War II.Brussels, Belgium Nov. 8, 1945 My Dearest Snooky, The clerk at headquarters just called me on the phone and said he had to have papers showing your parents’ consent – since you are under 21. Here’s what you do: Have your mom or dad to write out in script their consent – like this: “Our daughter, Miss Rosemary Snook, age 18, of 179 Krison Rd. E. Howe Bournemouth Eng., has our (her parents) consent to marry Sgt. Geo. Fisher, 18169625 of Hq. Chan. Base Sec. U.S. Army.” Then the signatures of both your mom and dad. Please get this done as soon as you can, will you, Snooky? They have to have it before they can do anything else. Everything else seems to be going okay. I’ll try to wire you 20 pounds tonight for the ring. Don’t have time to write more. Just had to send you this information on the army’s time – but I’ll write you a longer letter tomorrow. Love Always, George P.S. It might be a good idea if you will send this through the American Red Cross. Letters get to American personnel much faster through the American post office. I know they’ll be glad to take care of it

[Transcription begins] Jan. 23, 1944 Friends at Bryant: First of all let me apologize in being so delinquent in writing. The fact is I’ve been moving so much I was reluctant to write for fear my address would change within a few days. After leaving Mississippi I transferred to Texas, Florida and finally up here. I received the Christmas package and letter and believe me you will never know just how much they meant to me. The mention of friends brought back to memory many fond remembrances. I don’t suppose I can add to the many praises which the Bryant Service Club has received, but believe me your fine work is not passing unappreciated. Thanks again and I’d love to hear from all of you again individually or collectively. George T. Dion 43 P.S. I’ve been transferred to the Air Corp. I’m now attending school here. [Transcription ends
