    The subject of each of the following vignettes was connected, in some way or other, with the Diocese of Clifton. Fr Eustace Barron served in a number of parishes in the diocese between 1876 and 1916; Mgr Francis Bickerstaffe-Drew was a good friend of George Ambrose Burton, Bishop of Clifton from 1902-31, with whom he maintained a correspondence throughout his time as a military chaplain in Flanders during the First World War; and Fr John Buchanan, a chaplain with the United States Army, was posted to the diocese with his men during the Second World War. </jats:p
