Artesania e industriosidad: los retratos de George Peter Alexander Healy (1834-1868)
No full textBellion, Wendy A.Portrait painter George Peter Alexander Healy (1813-1894) captured in his work the faces of the powerful and the wealthy in midcentury America. Although highly popular at the time, his life and work have been mostly ignored in the scholarship on nineteenth-century art. Through methods of archival research and iconography, and through the perspective of social art history and postcolonial studies, this dissertation studies Healy’s activity between 1834 and 1868 to reveal how the artist embraced industrial culture. Industrial and financial capitalism shaped Healy’s career as a source of patronage as well as inspiration, motivating the artist to redefine the portrait genre and rethink its marketability. Healy concocted different genres to satisfy his industrialist sitters: portraits of the “industrial aristocrat,” the “industrial inventor,” and the “financial capitalist.” This dissertation traces Healy’s prolific career as a portraitist and analyzes his engagement with industrial materials, methods of production, land use, and networks of distribution and exchange. It also examines how his venues of display, marketing strategies, and travel patterns utilized nineteenth-century industrial technology. Together, this evidence demonstrates that during the most prolific period of his career, Healy visualized industrial and financial capitalism in the midcentury U.S. by fully embodying industrial processes in his life and work, and, in turn, shaped industrial culture through his portrait practice.El retratista George Peter Alexander Healy (1813-1894) capturó en su obra los rostros de los miembros pudientes de la sociedad estadounidense de mediados de siglo. Aunque fue muy popular en ese momento, su vida y obra se han ignorado en la mayoría de los estudios sobre el arte del siglo XIX. A través de la iconografía y de investigación de archivos, junto con las perspectivas de la historia social del arte y los estudios poscoloniales, esta tesis estudia la actividad de Healy entre 1834 y 1868 para revelar cómo el artista adoptó la cultura industrial. El capitalismo industrial y financiero dio forma a la carrera de Healy como fuente de patrocinio y de inspiración, lo que motivó al artista a redefinir el género del retrato y a repensar su comerciabilidad. Healy formuló diferentes géneros retratísticos para satisfacer a sus modelos industriales: el "aristócrata industrial", el "inventor industrial" y el "capitalista financiero".
