    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Testes qualitativos e quantitativos com o traçador fluorescente rhodamina-WT (RWT) foram realizados na porção sudoeste da área carbonática Lajeado-Bombas, localizada no alto vale do rio Ribeira de Iguape, município de Iporanga, na região sul-sudeste do Estado de São Paulo. A partir dos testes qualitativos foi possível identificar dois sistemas de drenagem subterrânea independentes na área estudada: sistema Córrego Fundo e sistema Areias-Bombas. No sistema Córrego Fundo foi comprovado que em condições de nível de água (n.a.) baixo, as águas coletadas pelo sumidouro da gruta do Córrego Fundo e pelo sumidouro do córrego da Passoca, ressurgem no lago do Bairro da Serra, configurando um sistema convergente. Já em períodos de n.a. alto, as águas destes dois sumidouros ressurgem tanto na ressurgência do lago do Bairro da Serra como na ressurgência da gruta do Córrego Seco, caracterizando um sistema divergente. No sistema Areias-Bombas, os córregos provenientes da serra da Anta Gorda são injetados na área carbonática, passam pela gruta das Areias de Cima e convergem para a depressão das Areias. Os córregos Batalha, Sebastião Machado e Carniça são responsáveis pela formação do ramo esquerdo desta gruta, enquanto que o córrego Grande e Roncador formam as galerias do ramo direito. Na depressão das Areias, a drenagem é injetada na gruta das Areias de Baixo, vindo a ressurgir na gruta do Laboratório. Neste percurso o sistema recebe as águas do sumidouro autogênico da Berta do Leão I e II. Os córregos Grande e Roncador apresentam um caráter divergente, remetendo parte do seu fluxo para a ressurgência das Bombas. Os testes quantitativos foram realizados na rota de fluxo \"sumidouro do córrego Carniça-depressão das Areias-ressurgência da gruta do Laboratório\", permitindo caracterizar parâmetros hidrológicos e características morfológicas da rota em duas situações distintas: durante período de chuvas e durante período de estiagem. No período de estiagem a circulação da água foi caracterizada por movimentos lentos com velocidades médias de 0,08 m/s e velocidades máximas de 0,17 m/s. Já em épocas de chuva os movimentos foram mais rápidos, com velocidades médias de 0,15 m/s e velocidades máximas de 0,38 m/s.The main proposal of this research is the geohydrological study of the southwestern part of the Lajeado-Bombas limestone area using qualitative and quantitative dye-tracing tests with rhodamine-WT (RWT). The study area lies in the upper Riviera river valley, Iporanga municipality, Southern São Paulo, Brazil. Based on the qualitative dye-tracing test, two independent underground drainage systems have been identified: the Córrego Fundo and the Areias-Bombas systems. The Córrego Fundo system showed a convergent drainage behavior during low-stage periods, by which the water collected by the Córrego Fundo and Passoca caves comes out at the Bairro da Serra lake. On the other hand, during high-stage periods the same system exhibits a divergent pattern, and the water collected by the above two caves comes out both at the Bairro da Serra Lake and the Córrego Seco cave ressurgence. In the Areias-Bombas system, the allogenic rivers coming from the Anta Gorda range sink into the limestone, go through the Areia de Cima cave, and converge to the Areias karst depression. The Batalha, Sebastião Machado and Carniça creeks form the left branch of the Areias cave system, whereas the Grande and Roncador creeks belong to the right branch of this cave. In the Areias depression the water drains into the Areias de Baixo cave and comes out at the Laboratório cave ressurgence. During this flow route the system receives water from the Berta do Leão I and II autogenic sinkholes. The Roncador and Grande creeks have a divergent drainage pattern in which part of their water goes to the Bombas ressurgence. Quantitative dye-tracing tests were performed during high-and low-stage periods for the flow route between the Carniça creek sinkhole, Areias depression and Laboratório ressurgence. During the low-stage period the measured mean groundwater flow velocity was 0,08m/s with a maximum of 0,17m/s.     We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
