Glasius bio-inspired neural networks based UV-C disinfection path planning improved by preventive deadlock processing algorithm

    No full text
The COVID-19 pandemic made robot manufacturers explore the idea of combining mobile robotics with UV-C light to automate the disinfection processes. But performing this process in an optimum way introduces some challenges: on the one hand, it is necessary to guarantee that all surfaces receive the radiation level to ensure the disinfection; at the same time, it is necessary to minimize the radiation dose to avoid the damage of the environment. In this work, both challenges are addressed with the design of a complete coverage path planning (CCPP) algorithm. To do it, a novel architecture that combines the glasius bio-inspired neural network (GBNN), a motion strategy, an UV-C estimator, a speed controller, and a pure pursuit controller have been designed. One of the main issues in CCPP is the deadlocks. In this application they may cause a loss of the operation, lack of regularity and high peaks in the radiation dose map, and in the worst case, they can make the robot to get stuck and not complete the disinfection process. To tackle this problem, in this work we propose a preventive deadlock processing algorithm (PDPA) and an escape route generator algorithm (ERGA). Simulation results show how the application of PDPA and the ERGA allow to complete complex maps in an efficient way where the application of GBNN is not enough. Indeed, a 58% more of covered surface is observed. Furthermore, two different motion strategies have been compared: boustrophedon and spiral motion, to check its influence on the performance of the robot navigation

Multidialectal orthography and the writing of vowels in Mixe

    No full text
This paper deals with the challenges of achieving a unified writing system for all Oaxaca Mixe languages, something that many community members deem necessary for defending the identity and culture of the Mixe people. The Mixe orthography was created in the 80’s as the result of the collaboration between community members and linguists (cf. Valiñas, 1991). One explicit goal of that process was to create a single writing system for all the dialects. Nowadays, this system is a wide spread orthography as it is used almost officially in some communities, it appears in recent publications (Díaz, 2008; Zavala, 2013a, b; inter alia), and it is taught in some high schools and in two colleges throughout the Mixe territory. It is intended to be a deep orthography (Seifart, 2006; Katz & Frost, 1992; inter alia), with a high correspondence between phonemes and graphemes (Reyes, 2005). While it can be easily adapted to write the consonants for all dialects, it has several problems for writing vowels. Due to the lack of phonological descriptions thirty years ago, the vowels systems of many Mixe languages were not taken into account. Furthermore, there was little understanding of the phonological processes that changed the vowel systems from six vowels in proto-Mixe (Wichmann, 1995) to a range of six to nine (or even ten) vowels in the present day Mixe languages (Author, forthcoming). Thus, it was difficult to realize that seemingly phonetically equivalent vowels are phonologically different across dialects and how differently sounding vowels are in fact phonologically equivalent between two given dialects. Thus, in many cases there is disagreement as to how some vowels should be represented. In addition, for some communities, using different conventions for writing vowels provides a distinctive identity (Suslak, 2003). Based on a comparative study of the vowel system in twenty six Mixe dialects (Author, forthcoming), this paper shows how the problems for writing vowels could been solved once there was a better understanding of the phonological processes that changed the vowel systems in Mixe languages. However, this solution would involve a compromise between a deep and a shallow writing system. Finally, I will discuss how non-linguistic factors make very difficult to actually achieve the desire of having a unified orthography. References Author. Forthcoming. The discussion around the nutrition and physical, intellectual and moral education of children and adolescents has been pervasive throughout Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Often tackled by authors of medical treatises and encyclopedias, the educatio of children and youngsters has triggered the interest of the Portuguese physician Rodrigo de Castro (c.1546-1627/29?) who dealt with it in the final section of the First Part of his treatise De uniuersa mulierum medicina. Drawing on the comparison between this text and the medical writings that preceded it, we will seek to outline the educational routine prescribed for children and adolescents in the course of the twenty centuries separating Mnesitheus of Athens (4th century B.C.) and Castro, as well as reflect on how the Portuguese author has in-corporated elements drawn from ancient and medieval traditions in his own work. IV a. The Ancient Medical Sources in the Chapters about Sterility of Rodrigo de Castro’s De universa mulierum medicina

Rodrigo de Castro (c. 1546–1627) was a Portuguese medical author exiled in Hamburg, where he wrote De universa mulierum medicina (1603). This chapter will identify the ancient sources cited in the chapters about sterility, and analyse how Castro relied upon classical medical, biological, and philosophical texts to structure his views. The chapter considers his suggested types, causes, and therapies for female and male sterility, and the legal, social, and moral implications of sterility. More broadly, the chapter will demonstrate the connections between sexuality, conception, and fertility in early modern medical texts, reconsider the validity of Thomas Laqueur’s influential ‘one-sex model’, and show how early modern authors drew on the authority of ancient medical sources to justify the attribution of blame to men and women in theories of infertility.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Will Quantum Computers Scale without Inter-Chip Comms? A Structured Design Exploration to the Monolithic vs Distributed Architectures Quest

    No full text
Being a very promising technology, with impressive advances in the recent years, it is still unclear how quantum computing will scale to satisfy the requirements of its most powerful applications. Although continued progress in the fabrication and control of qubits is required, quantum computing scalability will depend as well on a comprehensive architectural design considering a distributed multi-core approach as an alternative to the traditional monolithic version, hence including a communications perspective. However, this goes beyond introducing mere interconnects. Rather, it implies consolidating the full communications stack in the quantum computer structure. In this paper, we propose a double full-stack architecture encompassing quantum computation and quantum communications, which we use to address the monolithic versus distributed question with a structured design methodology. For that, we revisit the different quantum computing layers to capture and model their essence by highlighting the open design variables and performance metrics. Using behavioral models and actual measurements from existing quantum computers, the results of simulations suggest that multicore architectures may effectively unleash the full quantum computer potential.Accepted Author ManuscriptQCD/Almudever La

Estimating selection pressures on HIV-1 using phylogenetic likelihood models

    No full text
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) can rapidly evolve due to selection pressures exerted by HIV-specific immune responses, antiviral agents, and to allow the virus to establish infection in different compartments in the body. Statistical models applied to HIV-1 sequence data can help to elucidate the nature of these selection pressures through comparisons of non-synonymous (or amino acid changing) and synonymous (or amino acid preserving) substitution rates. These models also need to take into account the non-independence of sequences due to their shared evolutionary history. We review how we have developed these methods and have applied them to characterize the evolution of HIV-1 in vivo. To illustrate our methods, we present an analysis of compartment-specific evolution of HIV-1 em) in blood and cerebrospinal fluid and of site-to-site variation in the gag gene of subtype C HIV-1. The Narrative of Rodrigo Rey Rosa and the Clues to Violence

    No full text
Rodrigo Rey Rosa (Guatemala, 1958) has written some stories and novels that have earned an important place in literature not only in his country but also in Latin America and Spain. His work reveals disparate faces of violence. In many cases, this violence is not only a mechanism to illustrate the scope of evil, but also what is worse, its persistence and ways of sophistication. From the discourse analysis of his works such as Ningún lugar sagrado (1998), Piedras encantadas (2001), Caballeriza (2006), Otro zoo (2007) and El material humano (2009), in this article we present some elements that would make possible to determine a “typology” of violence: a) the determinants of the culture of violence, b) declarative elements that articulate his discourse; c) the subjects of violence: officials, adventurers, criminals, rogues, rascals d) forms of violence: political, institutional, kidnapping, weapons, drugs (trade and consume), bad management of information and traffic of influences, among others. The result will be an analysis that may let us understand the argument levels about violence, one of the most significant recurrences in the Guatemalan author\u27s narrative.特集 ラテン文学論
