An asynchronous distributed and scalable generalized Nash equilibrium seeking algorithm for strongly monotone games

    No full text
In this paper, we present three distributed algorithms to solve a class of Generalized Nash Equilibrium (GNE) seeking problems in strongly monotone games. The first one (SD-GENO) is based on synchronous updates of the agents, while the second and the third (AD-GEED and AD-GENO) represent asynchronous solutions that are robust to communication delays. AD-GENO can be seen as a refinement of AD-GEED, since it only requires node auxiliary variables, enhancing the scalability of the algorithm. Our main contribution is to prove convergence to a v-GNE variational-GNE (vGNE) of the game via an operator-theoretic approach. Finally, we apply the algorithms to network Cournot games and show how different activation sequences and delays affect convergence. We also compare the proposed algorithms to a state-of-the-art algorithm solving a similar problem, and observe that AD-GENO outperforms it.Team Bart De Schutte

George Müller: The Knight of Faith

    No full text
I have observed that contemporary Christian believers and churches often have distorted views of the meaning of faith as they seek to live out their Christian life. Such distorted views can translate into a variety of forms. For example, the phrase “the faith” may collectively denote a set of doctrines or theological beliefs. It is also adopted by the prosperity gospel movement to attain health and wealth. So, how does one learn the true meaning of faith as expressed in the New Testament and avoid the distortions in today’s Christendom? This thesis looks at the lived-out definition of faith as expressed in the book Fear and Trembling, written by Søren Kierkegaard under the pseudonym Johannes de silentio. In this book, the author uses the narrative of Abraham and Isaac in the Akedah to define the concept of faith, and he states that he has never met a person with the kind of faith that Abraham possessed. However, across the North Sea, in Bristol (England), there was a contemporary of Kierkegaard whose name was George Müller. His autobiography and the annual reports published to document the donations in support of his orphanages, schools, and missionary efforts that he had received through the power of his prayers describe well his life of faith. Last year, I published a novel featuring a fictionalized George Müller set in the twenty-first century. This contemporary setting makes this exceptional character accessible to today’s culture and society while preserving the original meaning of his mission and his faith in God. My novel was positively received and “inspired” a film that is currently being developed for release in 2023. The methodology that I employ to communicate the meaning of faith to Christians consists of a teaching model for small groups known as generational mentoring. Gregory Scott Massey developed this model in his 2019 dissertation Generational Mentoring: Using Past Saints as Present Examples. As the title suggests, the author uses small groups as a setting where Christians can learn specific character qualities from the model of Christians from the past who exemplified such qualities. I have included five chapters of an original workbook designed for small groups which help leaders teach the meaning of faith: (i) as defined by Søren Kierkegaard in Fear and Trembling through the life of Abraham, and (ii) as was lived out by George Müller, both the real nineteenth-century man and the contemporary fictional character from my novel.   </p

Abstract Legal effectiveness is a process that aims so that the law can be effective. Synergize between what is in the rules of a number of rules for the creation, maintenance and maintenance of peace in social life. This situation can be reviewed on the basis of several measures of effectiveness. According to Soerjono Soekanto, the main problem in law enforcement is located in its own law (the prevailing laws and regulations), law enforcers, namely those who oversee the application of law, facilities or facilities that support the application of law, the community where the law is applied and legal culture in the community. These five factors are closely related due to the essence of law enforcement. The five factors are a benchmark of the effectiveness of the application of the law. In this article the author tries to describe the functions of the Sharia law enforcement institutions in Aceh, namely the Mahkamah Syar'iyah and Wilayatul Hisbah

This two-part series is based on a speech given on 28 May 2018 at the Australia Awards Women’s Leadership Initiative at the Parliament of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. In Part 1 of this In Brief series, the author described some of the challenges in Papua New Guinea (PNG) today: the way custom can conflict with state law; the difficulties in upholding elements of our constitution that relate to equality; and what happens if we allow our institutions to be weak and ineffective. He also described how he thinks we can fix these problems — by respecting the rule of law, the constitution and democracy. But in this second part, he focuses on ethical leadership and gives some examples from his career which he thinks show how leaders can act in ethical ways when confronted with difficult situations.AusAI

Tourism Impacts on Indigenous Cultures in Papua New Guinea (PNG): At Time of International Tourism Shocks

    No full text
The Covid-19 pandemic has crippled the tourism industry with the massive decline in international tourism visitors. As a result, indigenous tourism communities that are heavily dependent on tourism suffer from the loss of economic and social benefits. Swaikoski (2020) believes that the niche tourism market flourished until the coronavirus (Covid-19) caused havoc on participating communities. The indigenous people in Papua New Guinea are known for their unique cultural knowledge, traditions, customs, beliefs, arts, and mythology. Each tribe contains distinct traditional attires, languages, totems, and rituals, adding uniqueness and importance to the world. Thus, this study acknowledges one of the iconic cultural groups in PNG, the Asaro Mudmen from Komunive village, Eastern Highlands Province. The author evaluates how the absence of tourism during the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the Komunive community, their way of life, resources, and leadership structure. This research explored both positive and negative impacts of tourism on the Komunive community to better understand the community’s views and perspectives about the post-Covid-19 era. The study employed a qualitative method of research in the form of a single case study approach and administered 17 interviews over one week using online platforms. The sample consists of village and church elders, village councillors, tourism committee members, and tour guides, all from the Komunive community. The indigenous community has never experienced an international tourism shock in the past. Thus, the results indicated more negative impacts experienced during the absence of tourism at the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. Tourism was a crucial contributor to the community's pre-Covid-19 era and played a significant role in their community well-being. These include economic, social, environmental, and cultural benefits. However, the absence of tourism has shifted their perspective on how they intend to reengage with tourism when tourists return to PNG. The study further found that the self-determination values of the indigenous community were a more vital link to the shift. The work is dedicated to the analysis and interpretation of selected themes in poetry of Stanislaw Grochowiak. The inicial hypothesis is the belief that self-reflexive poetry occupies a special place in the Grochowiak’s work. Most fully, creative awareness manifests itself when author uses particular poetic genres.
