Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Development of an analytics platform for Myhealthbox (Medtrend - Healthcare Analytics)

2. Responsabili delle politiche di assistenza sanitaria per monitorare focolai di malattie o livelli di interesse verso farmaci specifici o argomenti di salute.myHealthbox is one of the largest, independent, sources of digital information on healthcare products, it provides information suitable for both the general public and healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc.). The myHealthbox search engine provides users with easy access to digital information leaflets for a big selection of health-related products ranging from traditional pharmacy medicines to over-the-counter and alternative therapies, from medical devices and topical creams to nutritional supplements, veterinary and plants products. Ultimately the information provided helps patients and professionals use medicines and health products in a safer way. Every interaction with myHealthbox (i.e. searches, data and documents access) is recorded and logged. For each interaction with the platform the following information is collected: location, timestamp, referrer, search terms, accessed pages, language, documents viewed and time spent on each page/action. Data analytics is the scientific process of transforming data into insight for taking better decisions and finding the optimal path to the desired target/goal. The development of a data analytics solution often involves studying past historical data to research potential trends, to analyze the effects of certain decisions or events, or to evaluate the performance of a given tool or scenario. The goal of data analytics is to improve the business goals by extracting knowledge which can be used to make improvements or changes and reduce costs. MedsTrends is a data analytics tool developed to gain insights into the data collected from each interaction with the myHealthbox platform. It is a web based application built using the following technologies: PHP, MySQL, Apache, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, JSON. MedsTrends is used to identify the most popular products or active ingredients in every country, region, city or zip code area is a specific timeframe (i.e. week, month or year); a typical query could be: “find the top ten most popular products in Milan, Italy in November, 2016”. Another common query implies the retrieval of the location where a specific product is mostly read about; this in turn can help highlight season differences in product use or other season-related patterns. MedsTrends data can be visualized in table, chart or map mode. As the data analyzed includes not just search terms but also the actual information read by users, there is a fundamental difference in the reliability and relevance of the data MedsTrends' analysis is built upon. Most known solutions do not consider “relevance” as a variable in defining data quality and the few systems that do are struggling to find a useable approach to this problem. MedsTrends users typically belong to one of the following categories: 1. healthcare marketing or products managers to map and analyze interest in their own or competitor's products, highlight health trends or monitor interest in specific medicines classes. 2. healthcare policy makers to monitor disease outbreaks or levels of interest towards specific medicines or health topics

Collaboration of Parents and EFL Teachers to Enhance Children’s Motivation towards Reading Skills: Focus to 1st Cycle of Primary Schools in Jimma Zone

    No full text
The goal of this study is to investigate to what extent parents and an EFL teachers work collaboratively to boost children’s motivation to reading skills. To achieve this aim, the First Cycle of Primary Schools (1-4) of Jimma zone, two woredas ( Kersa and Mana) and one special town (Jimma) were taken as an example. Clear and measurable attempts were made to investigate the extent to which parents work with EFL teachers to increase their children’s motivation to the direction of reading skills. In order to achieve the targeted objective mixquestionnaire and semi-structured interview for teachers, an FGD with parents, and classroom observation were made on the current views of parents involvement to maximize students’ motivation of reading and teachers’ role as well. Results of the study show that the parents and EFL teachers hardly work cooperatively to enhance students’ motivation towards reading skill. They do not have an effective communication way in which they exchange constructive information about the students’ reading motivation. There are clearly seen mismatches between the intended curriculum that vehemently sets parents and teachers should work together so as to make students are motivated toward reading skill of English

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
