Dimensionalizing Cultures: The Hofstede Model in Context
No full textThis article describes briefly the Hofstede model of six dimensions of national cultures: Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Individualism/Collectivism, Masculinity/Femininity, Long/Short Term Orientation, and Indulgence/Restraint. It shows the conceptual and research efforts that preceded it and led up to it, and once it had become a paradigm for comparing cultures, research efforts that followed and built on it. The article stresses that dimensions depend on the level of aggregation; it describes the six entirely different dimensions found in the Hofstede et al. (2010) research into organizational cultures. It warns against confusion with value differences at the individual level. It concludes with a look ahead in what the study of dimensions of national cultures and the position of countries on them may still bring

ISSN 2537-6187.High rates of scientific and technological progress, computerization, globalization and internationalization of the world economy leads to the approach and interpenetration of business from different national cultures. The present paper is the “radiography” of the national culture in the Republic of Moldova according to Geert Hofstede theoretical model. Also, it identifies the variation and peculiarities of national culture dimensions: power distance index (PDI), individualism versus collectivism (IDV), uncertainty avoidance index (UAI), masculinity versus femininity (MAS), long term orientation versus short term normative orientation (LTO), indulgence versus restraint (IVR) in the countries of our study, Republic of Moldova and its main business partners: Romania, Russia, Ukraine, China and Germany

No full textZiel dieser Diplomarbeit ist es, eine Abgrenzung des Modells von Geert Hofstede zu anderen Kulturtheorien zu ermitteln und ferner die Diskussion um das Hofstedesche Kulturmodell aufzuarbeiten. Darauf aufbauend soll die Anwendbarkeit und Gültigkeit des Hofstedeschen Ansatzes geprüft werden, da dieser aufgrund seiner Sonderposition nicht selten ungeprüfte Anwendung erfährt. Die zentrale Frage ist demnach, ob geäußerte Kritiken und Schwachstellen Bestand haben und das Modell einer tatsächlichen Überarbeitung bedarf. Diese Fragestellung wird vor allem mit Blick auf das internationale Management beantwortet. Unterziel ist es, die Nutzbarmachung der Modelldaten für die praktische Anwendung darzulegen. Grundlegend für diese Diplomarbeit ist die Frage, welche tatsächliche Stellung die Kulturtheorie von Geert Hofstede heute einnimmt und inwiefern sie gültig Daten zur Verfügung stellt
