Life and work of Lloyd George Geering : an annotated bibliography
This bibliography consists of 114 works authored by Lloyd George Geering, and 27 works substantially about him, that have been published prior to December 2005.
While, because of the restricted time-frame and the selection criteria detailed below, this is not a comprehensive bibliography, it does include all significant works by or about Lloyd Geering through to the end of 2005, and provides an accurate representation of the key elements of his life and thought
The Geering controversy : a political analysis.
This is a study of an ideological conflict within the
Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. It is about a controversy
which stimulated fiercer debate than the church had seen in
its previous sixty years of united existence. It concerns a
conflict which at some stage encompassed most of the
fundamental doctrines of the organization and involved the
participation of nearly all its leading figures. The central
personality of the whole debate was Lloyd Geering, principal
of the denominational seminary, who found himself at the end
of 1967 arraigned before the highest court of his church on
a charge of heresy

Die ‘vergroening’ van die Christelike godsdiens: Charles Darwin, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin en Lloyd Geering
The greening of Christianity: Charles Darwin, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Lloyd Geering. Since the time of Charles Darwin, evolutionary biology challenged the metanarrative of Christianity which can be summarised as Fall-Redemption-Judgement. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin tried to circumvent these challenges by integrating the traditional Christian doctrines with evolutionary biology. However, he did not succeed since the Catholic Church, time and again, vetoed his theological publications. A number of Protestant theologians promoted his views but even they could not convince ordinary Christians to accept his views. These were too esoteric for Christians. Most of them were convinced that the acceptance of the theory of evolution will eventually undermine their faith. In recent years Lloyd Geering argued a case for the creation of a new narrative in which the Big Bang and the theory of evolution do play a role. He calls it the ‘Greening of Christianity’. This article discusses the metanarrative of Christianity and the challenges the theory of evolution presents before it assesses the views of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Lloyd Geering
Northern Scotland's late oil-fuelled industrialisation: labour mobility and community transformation since the 1970s
Northern Scotland experienced profound transformations during the late twentieth century through the discovery and exploitation of North Sea oil and gas. This chapter discusses two instances of the boom in industrial activity, which has had major, enduring impacts on the region’s social, economic, and physical landscapes. It first examines the manufacturing of oil rigs at a giant graving dock at Nigg in Easter Ross. Next, it explores the building and operation of what was once Europe’s largest oil terminal at Sullom Voe in Shetland. These changes reversed long-term historical trends: the Highlands and Islands underwent late industrialisation at a time when Britain’s traditional manufacturing regions were shedding hundreds of thousands of jobs. Distinct trajectories of labour mobility were apparent, which varied from temporary relocation in Shetland and Easter Ross to career transitions to the international oil industry. Dislocations in both places and the maturing and depletion of the North Sea basin were associated with disappointment, namely layoffs and closures. More recent discussions on hopes for the transition to wind power in Sullom Voe and Nigg are moulded by their experiences and understanding of what renewables could offer and the legacies of Easter Ross as a hub of energy industry manufacturing and Shetland as a centre of landing oil and gas
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
