    No full text
Applied to a wide range of areas, the key concepts of data mining and artificial intelligence have recently been introduced to the field of information and records management. When the academic studies conducted in the field in recent years are examined, it is observed that one of the main points of interest is the processing of the data obtained from information management systems and transforming them into useful and usable information. The raw data in these systems are processed by various methods and converted from static data stacks to dynamic information, thus providing support to decision makers in terms of both strategic planning and management. With the diversification of information management systems, data in Student Information Management Systems (SIMS) in educational institutions such as universities have also entered the application area of data mining. In this study; by using the data of Marmara University (MU) Department of Information and Records Management (DIRM) students between the years 2011-2022, it is aimed to determine in which areas the curriculum-based course choices are made. In this context, students\" academic/professional preferences and tendencies can be determined by making data analysis and visualizations. To this end, DIRM students’ recorded data in MU SIMS between 2011-2022, except for identity number, student number, name, surname information, all anonymized data (courses taken, place of birth (city/region), grade point average, graduation time, number of students who graduated and left the department, etc.) will be analyzed by data mining techniques and data visualization. The data obtained from ÖBYS in excel format will be analyzed using Python programming language and Pandas library and visualized with different data visualization libraries such as Seaborn, Plotly, Matplotlib. Keywords: Information and records management; data visualization; association rules analysis; student information management system

    Carbon neutrality and economic development

The scope of the research is to analyze the relationship among CO2 emissions, aggregate income, energy consumption, and openness degree using a Panel Vector Auto-Regression (PVAR) methodology for a sample of nine industrialized countries, with a long-term perspective (1870–2008). The empirical results show the absence of a causal nexus between energy consumption and GDP, in favor of the “neutrality hypothesis.” Moreover, a strong bidirectional causal relationship is evidenced between CO2 emissions and energy consumption. Finally, a strong association between GDP and openness degree is detected, as a result of the globalization process

    Statistical Hydrology

    No full text
Hydrological phenomena such as precipitation, floods, and droughts are inherently random by nature. Due to the complexity of the hydrologic system, these physical processes are not fully understood and reliable deterministic mathematical models are still to be developed. Therefore, in order to provide useful analyses for designing hydraulic facilities and infrastructures, statistical approaches have been commonly adopted. This chapter describes some statistical topics widely used in hydrology. Among the large number of subjects available in literature, the attention is focalized on some of them particularly useful either for innovative hydrological analyses or for an appropriate application of common procedures. Precisely, the chapter describes in details the stationary hypothesis on hydrological time series, the univariate extreme value analysis procedure, the intensity–duration–frequency curves, the copula function useful for multivariate analysis, and the regional flood frequency analysis. Author Keywords: Copula function; Extreme rainfall analysis; Extreme value analysis; Goodness-of-fit tests; IDF – intensity duration frequency curves; L-moments; Multivariate distributions; Nonstationary time series; Regional index flood; RFFA – regional flood frequency analysis; Time series segmentation; Trend detectio

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Condemned to be a criminal. The debate on criminal responsibility: from 19th century Italian legal science to neuroscience

    No full text
During the 19th century the concepts of liability changed radically in all areas of law. In this context, Cesare Lombroso with his scientific studies reveals the figure of the delinquent, and he has the audacity to demonstrate the non-existence of free will. From these scientific studies the Italian Positive School develops, a movement of jurists who spread the idea of an atavistic determinism in Europe, according to which, at the base of the criminal phenomenon, there are anthropological factors. After some initial success of Italian theses in Europe, the first criticism of the Italian school came from France and Germany. These opinions favour the emergence of a common European tendency, the movement of “social criminal law”, i.e. a group of jurists who, in spite of their origin and training, show a clear sensitivity towards the new social sciences and favour the contamination of criminal law by these social sciences, ending up attributing great importance to social factors in the development of the criminal phenomenon, an incidence that the law must necessarily take into account when dealing with criminal responsibility

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
