    Friends and Neighbors: Jazz and Everyday Aesthetics

    Everyday life became a major theme for philosophers, ethnographers, historians, sociologists, cultural theorists, and artists in the early twentieth-century, and it continues to inform some of the most important debates in all of these fields. The use of the term, however, is often vague and paradoxical. It has been applied on the one hand to experiences that are common to everyone, such as eating, sleeping, walking or talking; on the other hand, it is used to describe social practices that are somehow excluded from or in some way resist incorporation into the standard narratives of modern life. This chapter explores the concept of everyday aesthetics in the context of jazz studies. It begins with a survey of current debates on everyday life in popular music studies, cultural studies, ethnomusicology and philosophy, before discussing the example of Ornette Coleman’s early-1970s loft experiment, the Artist House, in New York City

    In Vaudeville Melodies, Nicholas Gebhardt introduces us to the performers, managers, and audiences who turned disjointed variety show acts into a phenomenally successful business. First introduced in the late nineteenth century, by 1915 vaudeville was being performed across the globe, incorporating thousands of performers from every branch of show business. Its astronomical success relied on a huge network of theatres, each part of a circuit and administered from centralized booking offices. Gebhardt shows us how vaudeville transformed relationships among performers, managers, and audiences, and argues that these changes affected popular music culture in ways we are still seeing today. Drawing on firsthand accounts, Gebhardt explores the practices by which vaudeville performers came to understand what it meant to entertain an audience, the conditions in which they worked, the institutions they relied upon, and the values they imagined were essential to their success

    Heritability and Linkage Analysis of Appendicitis Utilizing Age at Onset

    Appendicitis usually afflicts the young, but there is a large tail in the distribution of onset age. The genetics of this disease are still not well understood. A heritability analysis and genome wide linkage analysis of a large twin dataset was undertaken. Treating age of onset of appendicitis as a censored survival trait revealed a heritability of 0.21, and found evidence of linkage to Chromosome 1p37.3.     The Cultural Politics of Jazz Collectives: This Is Our Music documents the emergence of collective movements in jazz and improvised music. Jazz history is most often portrayed as a site for individual expression and revolves around the celebration of iconic figures, while the networks and collaborations that enable the music to maintain and sustain its cultural status are surprisingly under-investigated. This collection explores the history of musician-led collectives and the ways in which they offer a powerful counter-model for rethinking jazz practices in the post-war period. It includes studies of groups including the New York Musicians Organization, Sweden’s Ett minne för livet, Wonderbrass from South Wales, the contemporary Dutch jazz-hip hop scene, and Austria‘s JazzWerkstatt. With an international list of contributors and examples from Europe and the United States, these twelve essays and case studies examine issues of shared aesthetic vision, socioeconomic and political factors, local education, and cultural values among improvising musicians

He is the author of the screenplay the Seven Per Cent Solution and co-author of The Black Orchid.
