    Laser-vibrometric ultrasonic characterization of resonant modes and quality factors of Ge membranes

    The vibrations of a single-crystal germanium (Ge) membrane are studied in air and vacuum using laser vibrometry, in order to determine mechanical properties such as Q-factors, tensile stress, anisotropy, and robustness to shock. Resonance modes up to 3:2 are identified, giving a residual stress measurement of 0.22 GPa, consistent with the value obtained from x-ray relaxation studies. The membrane is found to be isotropic, with Q-factors ranging from around 40 at atmospheric pressure to over 3200 at 5 x 10-4 mbar, significantly lower than those found in polycrystalline Ge micromechanical devices. The robustness to shock is explained through the high resonance mode frequencies and the dissipation mechanism into the substrate, which is a direct consequence of having a high quality film with low residual tensile stress, giving the potential for such films to be used in optoelectronic devices

    Cultural identities as reflected in the literature of the Northern and Southern dynasties period (4th-6th centuries A.D.)

    During the period of the Northern and Southern dynasties of China identity questions became serious in a society thrown into disorder by political, religious and ethnic problems. This thesis uses three books written in the sixth century to discuss how educated Chinese faced identity problems and how they dealt with them. The Buddhist monk Huijiao, dealt with the problems of sinifying a foreign religion. He constructed many different identities in addition to the Buddhist one for the monks in his book Gaoseng zhuan, (Lives of Eminent Monks), a collection of biographies of Buddhist monks, to bring Buddhism closer to Chinese tradition and more acceptable by Confucian standards. Through the identity construction he also made responses to anti-Buddhist ideas. Yang Xuanzhi's Luoyang qielan ji, (Record of the Monasteries of Luoyang), deals with the identity problems of Chinese officials serving a Xianbei regime in the north and of the short-lived capital of the Northern Wei in Luoyang. Yang reconstructed a Chinese identity for the lost capital as a true heir of Chinese tradition, as were the emperors, princes and officials who lived there. He created an identity defined not by ethnicity but by culture. Yan Zhitui's Tanshi jiaxun, (Family Instruction of the Yan Clan), is a book which tells his descendants how to construct and maintain the future identity of his own family. He drew on his own experience of recovering from repeated political catastrophes to set out an identity that would help the family to survive disordered times and maintain their status in society

    The landscape of Wang Wei's Wang River Villa is examined by reviewing the essays and papers written about the poetical collaboration, the “Wang River Collection.” The purpose of this paper is to clarify the meaning of villa architecture in China. The author expects that this research will contribute to a mutual understanding between cultures. The villa was a Utopia for Wang. On the other hand, he was a pious Buddhist and Buddhistic concepts are reflected in the landscape. I consider the features of the classical landscape of Xie Lingyun and "Chu Ci," as written in “The Collection,” a reflection of the Buddhistic concept. When considering what the classics meant to Wang Wei, it is apparent that his villa is a representation of the classical landscape. It is not an imitation of the classical landscape, but a unique and original creation of art by Wang.departmental bulletin pape
