Sando Marteu: il cantore di Lubumbashi

    No full text
This article stems from a field research carried out in Lubumbashi in September and October 2018, as part of a national project on contemporary RDC, with a focus on the swahilophone creative expressions. It aims at outlining the poetics of the sing-songwriter Sando Marteau as it springs from his texts in Swahili, within the linguistic and cultural context of Lubumbashi

This paper reports on field research carried out as part of a Project of National Interest (PRIN) entitled “Mobility - Stabilisation. Congolese representations and social dynamics, in Congo and in the global space”, funded for the period 2017-2020 by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. Flavia Aiello and Roberto Gaudioso present unpublished texts by Patrick Mudekereza whom they met in Lubumbashi in 2018. Mudekereza never published his poems in poetry collections, considering his writing essentially as a practice associated with his work dedicated to art. Engaged in several forms of writing, both creative and discursive (the latter in French or English), the artist from Lubumbashi seems to have a very particular and intimate relationship with poetry, which he practises intermittently and of which he does not keep track systematically. In this article we will analyse six texts, three of which (Funga macho liya, Pima tuyambe and Langues) were composed during the work of the writers’ collective Libr’Écrire born in Lubumbashi in 2007; two are undated (Buzuri tele and Mu pori ya binvuri [In the Wood of Shadows]), and one (Mankamanshi>Mboleo [Snot>Fertilising]) is dated 13 February 2018. Three of these poetic compositions are bi/multilingual, in French, Swahili and Lingala (Funga macho liya, Langues, Mankamanshi>Mboleo), the others are written in Swahili

Treating eating disorders in groups: A pilot study on the role of a structured intervention on perfectionism on group climate

    No full text
Several studies have shown the efficacy of group treatments for patients with eating disorders (EDs) who have negative attitudes towards their bodies, also using the group climate as an indicator of process. Within this field of study, perfectionism has been examined as a factor that maintains eating disorders. This study proposes to comprehend what kind of treatment favours a better group climate, by providing a within-person comparison between two short group treatments of ED patients, where one was not focused on a specific topic and the other was structured around the topic of clinical perfectionism. Two groups of young adult patients with eating disorders were monitored for three months. Group climate was measured both with the Group Climate Questionnaire, which was administered at the end of each session, and through the clinical accounts written by an observer. The findings revealed that the perfectionism group, in comparison with the control group, presented a significantly higher level of engagement and avoidance, along with a lower level of conflict. In particular, the engagement of the perfectionism group increased in accordance with the therapeutic process, whilst in the control group, it remained relatively constant. The conflict decreased in both groups whilst avoidance increased alongside the sessions of the perfectionism group and decreased in the control group. The group on perfectionism, despite its enhanced high levels of avoidance, was effective in promoting a positive group climate. The clinical implications of structured group treatment for eating disorders, which manage the theme of mind-body splitting, will be discussed

Poesia swahili in Katanga: multilinguismo e corporalità nei versi di Patrick Mudekereza

    No full text
The world of Swahili contemporary poetry, as remarked by M. M. Mulokozi and T. S. Y. Sengo (1995: 22), is amazingly broad, given the progressive diffusion of the Swahili language in the course of the last two centuries, from the East African coast to the continental regions of Eastern and Central Africa. Accordingly, authors of Swahili poetic texts can also be found in the “periphery” of the Swahilophone area, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, where this language has become the medium of modern songs and written poetry in many areas, although the latter is hardly visible in a context where creative writing is predominantly expressed in French. In the present contribution, after an introduction on Swahili poetry in the DRC and on the linguistic complexity of the Swahilophone environment of Katanga, and particularly of its main city, Lubumbashi, we will present some (so far unpublished) poems by Patrick Mudekereza, art curator and director of the cultural centre WAZA, together with a first analysis of his verses, whose poetics emerges from plurilingualism and corporality

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
