    Wildlife associated with burrows of dolichotis patagonum in Central West Argentina

    Community structure is strongly influenced by positive interactions between species. Detecting and describing these interactions is essential in the study of communities. Dolichotis patagonum Zimmer-mann, 1780 (CN: mara) is a cavid rodent that builds burrows for breeding. In this study, camera traps were used to identify which species use the burrows built by maras in Sierra de las Quijadas National Park, San Luis, Argentina. All burrows were used by other species. A total of 68.7% of all medium-and small-sized taxa recorded in this study used the burrows.     En este trabajo se reporta el primer registro para Lyncodon patagonicus en el Parque Nacional Talampaya, provincia de La Rioja, Argentina. El mismo consiste en un registro fílmico proveniente de trampas cámara, donde también se observa la interacción de la especie con Lycalopex gymnocercus. Este dato aumenta las localidades de registro de L. patagonicus, considerada una especie rara y vulnerable, ampliando su presencia a cuatro áreas protegidasThis work reports the first record for Lyncodon patagonicus in Talampaya National Park, La Rioja province, Argentina.     Breeding behavior of mara [Dolichotis patagonum (Zimmermann, 1780)] in the Monte-Chaco ecotone of Argentina

    Phylogenetic constraints and ecological factors have been suggested as alternative key factors in the evolution of animal sociality. The mara (Dolichotis patagonum) is a cavid rodent endemic to Argentina that has the particularity of being monogamous with a communal breeding system. Researches on reproductive behavior of mara in its natural habitat have been restricted to Peninsula de Valdés (PV). In this work, we studied the breeding behavior of the mara in Sierra de las Quijadas National Park (SQNP). A census to locate mara's dens in 230 ha, was conducted through adjacent line transects of five meters width. After locating the dens, we followed their reproductive activity using camera traps. A density of 4.34 randomly distributed dens/ha was found. No communal breeding was observed. Breeding season extended from October to June. Estimated density was from 0.16 to 0.24 reproductive adults/ha. The survival rate of juveniles was 31.3%. These observations differ from those reported for the species. Resource dispersion hypothesis could explain both reproductive strategies prevailing in the extremes of its distribution, SQNP (solitary breeding) and PV (communal breeding). The intraspecific variability registered enhances the importance of ecological factors in determining sociality traits for the mara.Fil: Gatica, Ailin.     Potential predators of Dolichotis patagonum in the surroundings of its burrows, in Sierra de las Quijadas National Park, San Luis, Argentina

    Dolichotis patagonum (common name: mara) is a large sized rodent, endemic of Argentina, which raises its juveniles in burrows. It has recently been categorized as vulnerable. This is the first study to evaluate D. patagonum interactions with potential predators in the surroundings of the dens. We monitored 20 burrows, using camera-traps, with a total of 5644 camera-days, obtained over two years (2015 and 2016). Five potential predator species were detected (Lycalopex griseus, Puma concolor, Leopardus geoffroyi, Salvator sp. and Chaetophractus villosus). L. griseus and L. geoffroyi were the species with the highest frequency of visits. Both species were photographed attacking the juveniles. Four out of five potential predator species registered presented agonistic interactions with adults of mara. Overlap between all species analyzed and mara was low to moderate, and potential predator visits to the surrounding of the burrows did not vary according to the presence of juveniles. Our results suggest that in this system, predators behave as opportunistic predators of mara's juveniles. Mara's social and reproductive behavior varies along the distribution range of the species, therefore it is of great ecological value to analyze and understand the variations of its interactions with predators in different regions and environments.Fil: Gatica, Ailin.     Abundance and activity of Chelonoidis chilensis (Gray, 1870) in the Chaco-Monte ecotone of central Argentina region

    Turtles represent one of the most threatened groups of vertebrates. Habitat loss by expansion of the agricultural frontier, exploitation and unregulated trade are the primary causes for sharp declines in many turtle species. Chelonoidis chilensis is a widespread turtle having the broadest distribution in South American continent, it has recently been reclassified from threatened to vulnerable. Considering this, it is necessary to search for non-invasive study methods that allow us to safely assess its ecological traits and monitor its populations. The objective of this work was to evaluate abundance and activity patterns of C. chilensis, using conventional and non-invasive methodologies in different years and vegetation types in Sierra de las Quijadas National Park. Conventional methodology consisted in sampling a study area through 5m width visual detection transects, placed one adjacent to another, involving a total of 168 transects (216 has). This sampling was repeated twice, with a one-year interval. Non-invasive novelty methodology consisted of using ten camera traps that were installed for two years. Turtle frequency in different vegetation types, activity patterns according to temperature and sex ratio were determined. The abundance of C. chilensis registered was 0.027 (in 2016) and 0.036 turtles/ha (in 2017). Temporal activity, observed through camera-traps, was detected between 25 to 40 °C and from 8 am to 8 pm. The results allow us to conclude that the abundance in the park is lower than what has been reported by several authors in other Chaco regions. In this sense, further studies should be made on this ecotonal region to assure the protection of this vulnerable species. This study is the first to report abundancy and activity patterns of C. chilensis in the ecotonal region with the novelty of using a non-invasive method for monitoring the species.Fil: Gatica, Ailin.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
