Métodos de excavación, estratigrafía y SIG : reconstrucción de contextos depositacionales en el sitio de Piedras Blancas, Valle de Ambato, Provincia de Catamarca

Departamento de Antropología; Argentina.Los métodos de excavación que utilizamos en arqueología requieren que sigamos determinados procedimientos para excavar los depósitos arqueológicos. Estos procedimientos, no sólo establecen parámetros técnicos a seguir en la excavación, sino que también implican ciertos presupuestos acerca de la estructuración interna de los mismos. Así, al momento de aplicar una determinada técnica de excavación, también estamos suponiendo la naturaleza de los que vamos a excavar. Es decir, que cuando excavamos un sitio arqueológico, la disgregación y agrupación que hacemos de los depósitos conforman una especie de armazón estructural donde ubicamos a las interpretaciones posteriores que les realizamos. Ahora, dicho armazón ¿es una estructura inmutable? o por el contrario, ¿puede re-disgregarse y re-agruparse en otras dimensiones en función de nuevos interrogantes que puedan surgir en el proceso investigativo? En este sentido, en este trabajo mostramos las potencialidades que nos brinda la tecnología SIG para re-disgregar y re-agrupar los depósitos que ya fueron excavados en función de interrogantes que no fueron contemplados al momento de seguir determinados procedimiento de excavación. El caso de estudio a través del cual mostramos dichas potencialidades lo conforman las excavaciones realizadas durante un período de 5 años en el denominado Recinto H del sitio Piedras Blancas -Valle de Ambato, Provincia de Catamarca, República Argentina-donde no sólo los métodos aplicados fueron cambiando durante los años que duraron las excavaciones -método de decapage y una variante ad hoc del mismo-, sino que los interrogantes que nos realizamos hoy acerca de los significados que los objetos hallados tuvieron en relación a las prácticas sociales en las que intervinieron, requieren una nueva disgregación y reagrupación en otras dimensiones, que contemple la historia de formación de los depósitos excavados, lo que implica reconstruir las unidades estratigráficas y sus mutuas vinculaciones. The place of objects in the stratigraphic theory of Edward C. Harris : reflections from a habitation in the Ambato Valley, Argentina.
En este trabajo evaluamos las potencialidades y límites de la teoría estratigráfica de Edward C. Harris, para desarrollar estudios sobre los objetos arqueológicos en los que se pretenda comprender las prácticas sociales concretas en las que estos habrían estado involucrados en los lugares donde fueron utilizados. Tomamos un caso específico de análisis: la excavación de una habitación del sitio Piedras Blancas, Valle de Ambato, Catamarca, Argentina. Teniendo en cuenta los principios de estratigrafía arqueológica, realizamos un análisis reflexivo de las tomas de decisión en el campo con respecto a la definición de las unidades estratigráficas y su vinculación con objetos específicos hallados en el lugar. Esto nos permite: a) replantear el lugar marginal ocupado por los objetos en la teoría de Harris; b) evaluar la importancia de las unidades interfaciales e interfacies de período propuestas por el autor para aprehender otros tipos de relaciones –además de las estratigráficas– que permiten integrar a los objetos en áreas de actividades prácticas específicas y; c) realizar una reflexión crítica sobre las relaciones que se producen entre teoría y práctica en todo trabajo de excavación arqueológica.Fil: Gastaldi, Marcos R. Harris’ stratigraphic theory are evaluated in relation to the development of studies of archaeological objects that approach the understanding of specific social practices in which such objects were involved at the places they were used. The analysis is applied to a specific case, the excavation of a habitation at Piedras Blancas site, Ambato valley, Catamarca, Argentina. Bearing in mind the principles of archaeological stratigraphy, a reflexive analysis of decision making in the field about the definition of the different stratigraphic units and their relation to specific objects found at the site was carried out. Consequently, this paper: a) rethinks the marginal place occupied by objects in Harris’ theory; b) assesses the importance of the interfaces and period interfaces suggested by the author in observing other types of relationships –not only the stratigraphic– thus enabling the integration of objects in specific areas; and c) reflects critically on the relations between theory and practice in all excavation work

Departament of Petroleum Engineering; Norway.Although the studies of pre-hispanic architecture in northern Argentina are widespread, very little is known of the adobes used in architectural elements (walls, seats, etc.). During the first millenium of the Cristian era at the Ambato Valley (Catamarca, Argentina), the residential buildings were made combining adobe walls and stone colums. The walls were covered with either rock, clay plaster or red paint. Adobes from Piedras Blancas (PB) and Cerco de Palo 065 (CP65) residential sites of the Aguada Culture (4th to 12th c. AC) have been examined as well as local possible raw materials within the Ambato valley. Based on the size, building complexity and other features that reflect the social status of the inhabitants, PB is the site with higher hierarchy and complexity. CP65 on the other hand, locates 800 m north of PB and represents one of low hierarchy. This investigation will help to characterize these materials, to identify the clay source and to evaluate the availability, consumption and procurement of raw materials in the ordinary life of the Aguada people. Mineralogical and geochemical studies were conducted by XRD, FE-SEM-EDS, XRF and lithium metaborate/tetraborate fusion ICP combined with ICP/MS method on both the adobes and the possible source materials. The latter were also preliminary evaluated on basic physical and technological properties; their mineralogy, geochemistry and properties have been previously reported. There are no commercial clay deposits in the area. Local clay sources were selected as possible candidates from: clays of fault gouges derived from crystalline Precambrian to Low Paleozoic basement rocks (Humaya y Los Escobales), altered epiclastic rocks (Los Escobales) and Quaternary loessic sediments (Cerco de Palos 65a-b, El Rodeo, Los Varela, La Aguada, Los Escobales) that filled the valley and crop out close to the archaeological sites. At PB the adobes are fairly homogeneous in mineralogy and composed of quartz, micas (phlogopite, muscovite and biotite) and plagioclase along with hornblende, hypersthene, scarce chlorite and a clay suite of dominant illite, irregular I/S, and traces of kaolinite associated with minor calcite. Only the adobe from the perimeter wall (PB802) do not contain amphyboles and hypersthene but higher proportions of expandable clays (I/S). The adobe from CP65 is similar but with lower proportions of hornblende. This mineralogy matches that of the Quaternary loessic sediments one of which is nowadays used to make adobe. Particularly minerals like hornblende, hyperthene, phlogopite and kaolinite are present in both the adobes and the sediments. Comparing the chemical composition of the adobe material with the sampled clays then all but the samples from the fault gouge are possible candidates for the origin of the adobe. These clay samples are strongly enriched in Bi, Sb, Pb and Cs. The adobe samples do match nearly perfectly the Quaternary sediments and source material samples, besides one fractionated sample (a gravel) from El Rodeo. Slight differences can be observed only in a minute depletion in the adobe samples for Fe2O3 and TiO2 and enrichment in K2O (which is variable in the sources), Th and Cs - besides the significant enrichment in Nb and Ta. Hence, these source samples have been most probably used for the manufacturing of the adobe material. However, the mentioned source samples are not covering the entire composition of the adobe material as those are enriched in Cs, Nb and Ta; a certain additional input of Cs, Nb and Ta enriched material is necessary as all indicated source samples here show lower concentration of those three elements than the adobe, yet a mixing with the highly enriched samples from the fault gouge is not possible as then other trace elements should be enriched in the adobe, like Sb, Bi, Pb and Zr. The trend of using local Quaternary sediments for the adobe is strongly suggested by the mineralogy and the geochemistry. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
