Boxer - a Fortran program to compute source parameters of earthquakes from macroseismic data

    No full text
Boxer program is a revised and simplified version of several computer codes which have been written in the last 10 years to compute focal parameters of earthquakes from macroseismic data and have also been actually used to compute synthetic earthquake parameters for the “Catalogo dei Forti Terremoti in Italia dal 461 a.C. al 1990” [Boschi et al. 1995, 1997], the Catalogo Parametrico dei terremoti Italiani (CPTI) [CPTI Working Group, 1999] and to make the computation of the paper by Gasperini et al. [1999]. Release 3.3 implements an improved method to compute magnitude using a weighting scheme also including the reliability of empirical regressions for each intensity class as well as a procedure to compute coefficients of magnitude intensity relations. This new method has been actually adopted for revaluing the magnitudes of the historical seismic catalog [CPTI Working Group, 2004] used by the recent INGV initiative for the computation of the new seismic hazard map of Italy [Seismic-Hazard Map Working Group, 2004]. In this version are also included a previously undocumented option allowing to write import files for the MapInfo Graphic Information System (GIS) and a new option generating input files to plot epicenters and boxes by the General Mapping Tool [Wessel and Smith, 1991]. Other minor changes concerned the formats of input-output files. A description of the procedure to compute the azimuth and to draw the “boxes” representing the seismogenic structures can be found in Gasperini et al. [1999]. More details on the computation of epicenter and magnitude are reported by Gasperini and Ferrari [1995, 1997, 2000]. Acknowledgements The program took advantage of the contribution of Filippo Bernardini, Graziano Ferrari and Gianluca Valensise (who also suggested the name) and by important improvements made by Gianfranco Vannucci (particularly regarding the code to generate MapInfo and GMT files). We suspect that most criticisms by Pujol (2017, hereafter, P17) were originated by a misunderstanding of our article (Gasperini et al., 2015) that the author himself frankly admits (“Some of the arguments made in the paper were not completely clear to the present author” p. 11) and maybe even by a misunderstanding of the textbook of Fuller (1987). In the following, we will discuss in general the main P17 criticisms, whereas detailed answers to all of them are reported in the Appendix.Published548–5514IT. Banche datiJCR Journa

Comment on "General Orthogonal Regression Relations between Body-Wave and Moment Magnitudes" by Ranjit Das, H. R. Wason, and M. L. Sharma

    No full text
Das et al. (2013) describe a modification of the general orthogonal regression (GOR) method (Fuller, 1987) applied to the magnitude conversion problem that the same authors have already published at least twice in other journals (Das et al., 2012; Wason et al., 2012). Unfortunately, as more exhaustively discussed in our comment to Wason et al. (2012), published by the Geophysical Journal International (Gasperini and Lolli, 2014), some assumptions made by the authors are wrong and therefore their method has to be rejected

Bathymetric and seismic reflection survey of a landslide lake

    No full text
Recurring large scale landslides have regularly damned the natural flow of water in the high basin of the Savena river, causing large flooded areas; the most recent of these flooded areas is the Castel dell'Alpi lake ( Bologna) which formed in 1952. Bathymetric and seismic reflection profiles wre made in order to evaluate the filling rate of the lake. This note describes the measurements techniques and the results obtained. The study showed that the lake will be filled i about 40 years

Comparison of proton and electron radiation effects on dark count rate in a CMOS SPAD sensor

    No full text
The aim of this work is to investigate the degradation induced by radiation on the Dark Count Rate in a monolithic SPADs detector manufactured in a 150-nm CMOS process. Two irradiation campaigns have been carried out with 16 MeV protons and 2 MeV electrons. Samples have been exposed to different displacement damage dose. Differences between the effects induced by the two irradiation particle types have been observed. The Dark Count Rate characterization as a function of the delivered fluence has been reported, providing the limits of operability of such devices in a radiation environment. Finally, possible Dark Count Rate mitigation techniques have been investigated
