This thesis focuses on the work of Ramon Domènec Perés, literary critic and poet, and one of the main promoters of Catalan modernism. It encompasses thirty years, from 1883 to 1913, which span the height of his work. This thesis analyses all the journals in which Perés wrote during this time period, both Catalonia and Spain-wide, and focuses on analysing his opinions on Catalan literature. The analysis is divided into two big sections: “Critic Ramon D. Perés” and “Ramon D. Perés and Catalan literature, 1883-1913”. The first one introduces the individual within his context and follows his professional career. It also includes his ideas on literary criticism and a stylistic analysis of his articles. The second section synthesises his idees about Catalan literature: first, a more general perspective and afterwards focused on the genres of poetry, narrative and theatre. The section about poetry, which is the longest, focuses on Perés’s opinion on Marià Aguiló, Teodor Llorente, Jacint Verdaguer, Francesc Matheu, Apel·les Mestres, Alexandre de Riquer, Joan Maragall, Jaume Massó i Torrents and the authors from l’Escola Mallorquina. Within narrative, the thesis focuses on Carles Bosch de la Trinxeria, Emili Vilanova, Josep Pin i Soler, Dolors Monserdà, Narcís Oller, Raimon Casellas, Víctor Català and Josep Pous i Pagès. Finally, within theatre the thesis focuses on Frederic Soler, Àngel Guimerà, Santiago Rusiñol and Ignasi Iglésias. Finally, this thesis includes an unparalleled bibliographic inventory of Perés’s works and works about Perés, as well as an index of author names and works as an appendix, an essential tool for future studies about Perés and the critique of authors from that time period. This all helps to better understand a paramount figure in the modernization of Catalan literature and, at the same time, the debate of an initial modernism still rooted in naturalist ideas, reluctant to move forward with the groundbreaking changes of the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century

In February 2019, the Projecte Entrevistes had a large conversation with Josep Maria Comelles, pioneering anthropologist in Medical Anthropology in Spain and an international reference for his studies on psychiatric institutions. In the interview, Comelles describes their childhood and adolescence, which is fundamental to understand the path that will bring him from medicine to anthropology. He also offers his anthropological view on issues such as homeopathy, treatment of mental health or the situation of Spanish Anthropology in the global context. A whole journey through the life and thought of an author that always express freely his opinion

Investigation into the mobile genetic elements of Clostridium difficile

    No full text
Clostridium difficile is a pathogenic bacterium that can colonise both humans and various animals. Toxin production leads to clinical symptoms ranging from mild to severe diarrhoea and can result in potentially fatal pseudomembranous colitis. These symptoms are caused by the disruption of the cytoskeleton and tight junctions of gut epithelial cells by the toxins. Genomic sequencing of C. difficile has indicated the chromosome carries a number of mobile genetic elements including conjugative transposons, which can encode antibiotic resistance genes. Analysing the sequence of a number of C. difficile strains indicated that each genome carries at least one and often multiple conjugative transposons. For many of the genes on these elements, functions were predicted using various bioinformatic tools. The study of conjugative transposons in C. difficile has been limited by the lack of resistance genes encoded by the elements. Therefore, an antibiotic resistance gene was inserted into six of the elements in strains 630 and R20291 and filter-matings performed. Conjugative transfer was shown for all elements from strain 630 but not for Tn6103 from R20291. The study of transconjugants of these matings showed the pathogenicity locus, encoding the two major toxins of C. difficile, to transfer at a low frequency into a non-toxigenic recipient strain. Whole genome sequencing of transconjugants determined that the transfer is not limited to the pathogenicity locus but includes varying sizes of chromosomal DNA flanking the pathogenicity locus. RNA-seq was used for the comparison of mutants for transcriptional regulators of conjugative transposons CTn2 and CTn4, however no significant differential expression was detected. Furthermore, strain 630Δerm, a commonly used laboratory strain for the generation of knockout mutants, was compared to the wildtype strain 630. A predicted oxidative stress operon was upregulated in 630Δerm which raises the question of the biological impact of these results on the knockout model

Convergence of marine megafauna movement patterns in coastal and open oceans

The definitive version was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America 115 (2018): 3072-3077, doi:10.1073/pnas.1716137115.The extent of increasing anthropogenic impacts on large marine vertebrates partly depends on the animals’ movement patterns. Effective conservation requires identification of the key drivers of movement including intrinsic properties and extrinsic constraints associated with the dynamic nature of the environments the animals inhabit. However, the relative importance of intrinsic versus extrinsic factors remains elusive. We analyse a global dataset of 2.8 million locations from > 2,600 tracked individuals across 50 marine vertebrates evolutionarily separated by millions of years and using different locomotion modes (fly, swim, walk/paddle). Strikingly, movement patterns show a remarkable convergence, being strongly conserved across species and independent of body length and mass, despite these traits ranging over 10 orders of magnitude among the species studied. This represents a fundamental difference between marine and terrestrial vertebrates not previously identified, likely linked to the reduced costs of locomotion in water. Movement patterns were primarily explained by the interaction between species-specific traits and the habitat(s) they move through, resulting in complex movement patterns when moving close to coasts compared to more predictable patterns when moving in open oceans. This distinct difference may be associated with greater complexity within coastal micro-habitats, highlighting a critical role of preferred habitat in shaping marine vertebrate global movements. Efforts to develop understanding of the characteristics of vertebrate movement should consider the habitat(s) through which they move to identify how movement patterns will alter with forecasted severe ocean changes, such as reduced Arctic sea ice cover, sea level rise and declining oxygen content.Workshops funding granted by the UWA Oceans Institute, AIMS, and KAUST.
