    Vortex induced vibration analysis of a cylinder mounted on a flexible rod

    In this study, vortex induced vibrations of a cylinder mounted on a flexible rod are analyzed. This simple configuration represents the key element of new conception bladeless wind turbine (Whitlock 2015). In this study the structure oscillations equation coupled to the wake oscillation equation for this configuration are solved using analytical perturbation method, for the first time. An analytical expression that predicts the lock-in phenomena range of wind speed is derived. The discretized equations of motion are also solved using RKF45 numerical method. The equations of motion are discretized by Galerkin method. Free vibration mode shape of the structure taking into account the discontinuity of the cross section are used as comparison function. Numerical results are compared to the analytical results, and they show a satisfying agreement. The effect of system parameters on the oscillations of structure and wake as well as on the lock-in domain are presented. Moreover, it is shown that the values of wind speed triggering the start and the stop of the lock-in phenomenon, for increasing wind speed are different from those values obtained during the reverse process, i.e., when the wind speed decreases

    Analysis of autogram performance for rolling element bearing diagnosis by using different data sets

    Rolling element bearings are one of the most important component in every rotating machinery. As a result, their diagnosis before occurrence of any catastrophic failure is of vital importance and vibration based diagnosis is very popular approach. In this paper, the performance of a recently proposed method, Autogram, will be investigated on different data sets provided by Politecnico di Torino and University of Cincinnati. The results will be compared with other well-established methods such as Fast Kurtogram and Spectral Correlation

    Machine vibration monitoring for diagnostics through hypothesis testing

    Nowadays, the subject of machine diagnostics is gathering growing interest in the research field as switching from a programmed to a preventive maintenance regime based on the real health conditions (i.e., condition-based maintenance) can lead to great advantages both in terms of safety and costs. Nondestructive tests monitoring the state of health are fundamental for this purpose. An effective form of condition monitoring is that based on vibration (vibration monitoring), which exploits inexpensive accelerometers to perform machine diagnostics. In this work, statistics and hypothesis testing will be used to build a solid foundation for damage detection by recognition of patterns in a multivariate dataset which collects simple time features extracted from accelerometric measurements. In this regard, data from high-speed aeronautical bearings were analyzed. These were acquired on a test rig built by the Dynamic and Identification Research Group (DIRG) of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Politecnico di Torino. The proposed strategy was to reduce the multivariate dataset to a single index which the health conditions can be determined. This dimensionality reduction was initially performed using Principal Component Analysis, which proved to be a lossy compression. Improvement was obtained via Fisher’s Linear Discriminant Analysis, which finds the direction with maximum distance between the damaged and healthy indices. This method is still ineffective in highlighting phenomena that develop in directions orthogonal to the discriminant. Finally, a lossless compression was achieved using the Mahalanobis distance-based Novelty Indices, which was also able to compensate for possible latent confounding factors. Further, considerations about the confidence, the sensitivity, the curse of dimensionality, and the minimum number of samples were also tackled for ensuring statistical significance. The results obtained here were very good not only in terms of reduced amounts of missed and false alarms, but also considering the speed of the algorithms, their simplicity, and the full independence from human interaction, which make them suitable for real time implementation and integration in condition-based maintenance (CBM) regimes

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Analytical investigation of railway overhead contact wire dynamics and comparison with experimental results

    In this paper an analytical method for studying the free response of continuous vibrating systems with distributed and possibly non-proportional viscous damping is proposed. The most general case the method refers to is a piece-wise homogeneous Euler-Bernoulli beam, with lumped elastic and inertial elements and subjected to tensile load. The practical application of the method to a contact wire is also presented, aiming at analysing its dynamic response. Contact wires are typically used in the overhead contact line of the railway electrification system but, despite their wide diffusion, their damping properties have not been exhaustively studied. This study aims at experimentally validate the analytical method to define a reliable dynamic model of overhead contact lines. The wire is modelled as an axially loaded homogeneous beam, with lumped elastic and inertial elements (i.e. droppers and clamps). A state-form expansion applied in conjunction with a transfer matrix technique is adopted to extract the eigenvalues and to express the eigenfunctions in analytical form. Experimental measurements have been carried out in the Dynamics & Identification Research Group (DIRG) laboratory of Politecnico di Torino considering two different damping scenarios, and the modal properties of the test bench have been extracted by using a linear subspace identification technique. The damping distribution is finally investigated starting from the experimental data, in order to seek for the most appropriate damping model
