Abstract. We study the chemical enrichment of elliptical galaxies using a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation combined with a cosmological Nbody simulation of dark matter particles. In particular, we study the α-element abundances with respect to the iron content of galaxies. The main modification to the previous models (Cora 2006; Lagos et al. 2008; Tecce et al. 2010) was the implementation of a top heavy variable initial mass function with a theoretical basis (Weidner & Kroupa 2004, 2005, 2006; Weidner et al. 2011). We find that with a single initial mass function at all epochs the observed trend of [Alpha/Fe] with the stellar mass of elliptical galaxies can be hardly reproduced. We propound that a top heavy integrated galactic mass function can be a plausible solution for this problem.Fil: Gargiulo, Ignacio Daniel.

Tracking the orbit of unresolved subhalos for semi-analytic models

    Get PDF
We present an updated model for the evolution of the orbits of "orphangalaxies" to be used in the SAG semi-analytical model of galaxy formation andevolution. In cosmological simulations, orphan galaxies are those satellitegalaxies for which, due to limited mass resolution, halo finders lose track oftheir dark matter subhalos and can no longer be distinguished as self-boundoverdensities within the larger host system. Since the evolution of orphansdepends strongly on the orbit they describe within their host halo, a propertreatment of their evolution is crucial in predicting the distribution ofsubhalos and satellite galaxies. The model proposed takes into account thedynamical friction drag, mass loss by tidal stripping and a proximity mergercriterion, also it is simple enough to be inexpensive from a computationalpoint of view. To calibrate this model, we apply it onto a dark matter onlysimulation and compare the results with a high resolution simulation, considering the halo mass function and the two-point correlation function asconstraints. We show that while the halo mass function fails to put tightconstraints on the dynamical friction, the addition of clustering informationhelps to better define the parameters of the model related to the spatialdistribution of subhalos. Using the model with the best fit parameters allowsus to reproduce the halo mass function to a precision better than 5 per cent, and the two point correlation function at a precision better than 10 per cent.Fil: Delfino, Facundo Manuel. Unveiling the origins of galactic bars: insights from barred and unbarred galaxies

    Get PDF
A significant fraction of local galaxies exhibit stellar bars, non-axisymmetric structures composed of stars, gas, and dust. Identifying key differences between the properties of barred and unbarred galaxies can uncover clues about the conditions for triggering bar formation. We explore the early stages of bar formation in a small sample of disc barred galaxies extracted from the TNG50 cosmological simulation, and compare their properties to those of unbarred galaxies. According to our results, the most important difference between barred and unbarred galaxies is that the former have systematically higher fractions of stellar to dark matter mass in their inner regions, from very early stages and prior to the formation of the bars. They harbour high initial gas content, fostering increased star formation rates and leading to a central mass concentration that grows faster over time compared to unbarred galaxies. Examining the evolution of the halo spin within 10 ckpc reveals that barred galaxies have higher angular momentum transfer from the disc to the halo. Curiously, both barred and unbarred galaxies share similar initial low values of the halo spin, consistent with those proposed in the literature for bar formation. Furthermore, we evaluate existing stability criteria to capture the complexity of the process, and investigate the effects of mergers, flybys, and environment as possible drivers of bar formation. We find no clear link between mergers and disc instabilities resulting in the formation of bars, even though some of the simulated barred galaxies might have been influenced by these events.Fil: López, Paula Denise. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
