Get PDFThis volume includes an unpublished manuscript and selected portions of five seminars by Harold Garfinkel – the founder of ethnomethodology – on the topic of practices in the natural sciences and mathematics. The volume provides a coherent and sustained account of his program for the study of ordinary and specialized social actions. Presenting broader theoretical and methodological initiatives, as well as discussions and summaries of exemplary studies of social phenomena within and beyond the sciences, this work dates to the period in the 1980s during which the field of Science and Technology Studies was taking shape, with ethnomethodological studies of scientific practice forming a major part of its development at the time. Aside from their historical importance, the manuscript and seminars present a distinctive perspective on the natural and social sciences that remains highly original and pertinent to research on science, social science, and everyday life today. No full textAfter two years of fieldwork, Khirbet Qeiyafa is already becoming the center of the controversy over the existence of a complex state society in early Judah. The findings from this site have been spectacular and revealed much to archaeologists about the development of the Kingdom of Judah. In this presentation, Yosef Garfinkel presents an up-to-date description of the discoveries and possible identification of the site of Khirbet Qeiyafa.

No full textNew findings at Khirbet Qeiyafa provide evidence that a cult existed at the site. Standing stones, altars, shrines, and libation vessels all point to the inhabitants’ religious practices. However, there is something unique about these cultic items. What does the lack of images tell archaeologists about the nature of this cult? Do these imageless cultic items tie in with the peculiar local diet? How do these findings relate with the biblical mandates on food and worship? Yosef Garfinkel, PhD, flies in from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to provide his highly respected view on both the definitive existence of sanctuaries and the role of the cult in this ancient city.

Herbert Garfinkel
No full textHerbert Garfinkel was the founding dean of James Madison College at Michigan State University. He received his bachelor\u2019s, master\u2019s, and PhD each from the University of Chicago. He held a number of instructor and research assistant roles at various institutions, including at Michigan State from 1951 to 1953, before returning to Michigan State full-time as an associate professor of political science in 1959. Garfinkel obtained full professor status in 1964 and became the founding dean of James Madison residential college in 1966, serving until 1972. During this time, Garfinkel played an instrumental role in the planning, implementation, and development of this MSU College that continues to thrive today. He spent another couple years as director of the Public Administration program at Michigan State before moving onto administrative roles at several other universities. These roles included serving as provost and interim chancellor at the University of Nebraska Omaha and vice president of academic affairs at the University of Louisville. Garfinkel\u2019s scholarship as a political scientist often focused on providing information to common citizens including producing citizen guides to elections and on the topic of legislative apportionment. Garfinkel enjoyed teaching but equally enjoyed the administrative ranks and the opportunity to shape the collective goals of an institution

No full textHarold Garfinkel made fundamental contributions to twentieth-century sociology and beyond. He created a new and unique field of inquiry, ‘ethnomethodology,’ to study the everyday methods of practical action and practical reasoning used by members of society to make sense and produce order in their daily lives. Garfinkel and his students dissolved the supposed chasm between common sense and scientific/professional reasoning, unpacked the taken-for-granted existence of society, developed detailed descriptions of commonplace and specialized organizations of practice, and specified how society members assemble and sustain the sense that they live, act, and mean in a shared orderly world.
