    Matt Harloff, senior brass instructor for Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps, will give a masterclass at Gardner-Webb University as part of the Distinguished Artist Series. The program will be on Thursday, Jan. 13, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in Blanton Auditorium. A former student of GWU Professor Tim Hudson, Harloff has built CrownBRASS into one of the elite programs in the country.     Matt Eicheldinger, B.A. \u2709, M.A. \u2712 is an educator who used stories from his life to motivate his middle school students. When he found that not only were these stories effective, when written down, they inspired even the most reluctant of readers. This put Matt down a path of becoming a published author. In 2021, he launched a Kickstarter campaign to self-publish Matt Sprouts and The Curse of Ten Broken Toes. When the book became a hit, he was able to sign with an agent who quickly sold Matt Sprouts to a publisher. Matt shares how he became interested in being an educator, how he navigated the process of becoming a published author, and his future plans for more books

    Devastating natural disasters like the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan or last year’s earthquake in Haiti raise important and sometimes troubling questions about faith and belief. In an upcoming lecture, Gardner-Webb University School of Divinity’s Dr. Cal Robertson will examine ancient Israel’s beliefs about the spiritual significance of such disasters.
