The English translation of seventeenth-century French lyric poetry and epigrams during the Caroline period
This doctoral thesis is the first comprehensive study of contemporary English translations of French lyric poetry during the Caroline period. While there has been extensive study of translations from French literature of other genres, notably drama, translations of lyric poetry have been largely ignored. The thesis examines the translations within the context of literary and cultural trends in France and England during the seventeenth century. Differing cultural tendencies and reader expectations are evident both in the selection of particular poems for translation, and in the changes translators made to their source texts. Chapter one contains background information on the social and literary relations between France and England during the seventeenth century, and an overview of the social and political conditions in which poetry was written in each country. Chapter two investigates where and how translators obtained the texts of the poems they translated, and in particular the use of the recueils collectifs as sources for translations. Chapters three, four and five provide a thematic overview of the most significant and interesting translations. The themes chosen - eroticism, love and nature - constitute those most popular with translators, and the representation of these themes in both the original poems and the translations is closely connected to wider literary and cultural tendencies in both France and England. Having provided a thematic overview of the translations, chapters 6 and 7 examine some of the more technical and linguistic aspects of the practice of translating from contemporary French poetry in Caroline England. Chapter seven studies the translation of the French lyric voice, and the effects of this on the representation of themes, particularly love and nature. Chapter eight examines the English treatment of some aspects of seventeenth-century French prosody, placing these and the changes made by translators in the context of prosodic developments in both France and England. The conclusion highlights patterns identified in translators' handling of the source texts; these draw attention to the literary and cultural differences between France and England in the seventeenth century, and demonstrate that French poetry is altered in English translation to suit the tastes of translators and their intended English readership
Distinct impact of CURLY LEAF and SWINGER on the Arabidopsis Histone H3 Lysine 27 trimethylation pattern is linked to the underlying genetic code
Polycomb Group Proteins (PcG) are a conserved class of transcriptional repressors
in animals and plants, controlling the expression of hundreds of genes. Specifically,
they repress gene expression by histone H3 trimethylation at lysine 27 (H3K27me3)
via the Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2). In Arabidopsis thaliana CURLY LEAF
(CLF), a PRC2 methyltransferase, is partially redundant with the closely related protein
SWINGER (SWN). The phenotype of clf null mutant plants is less severe than the
phenotype of clf/swn double mutants. Plants that are mutated in swn exhibit no obvious
phenotype. The large degree of sequence conservation of both CLF and SWN
throughout the plant kingdom, suggests that they have distinct and conserved functions
in plant development.
I set out to identify the individual target genes of CLF and SWN and to uncover their
functions. To this end, I used chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by deep sequencing
to create genome-wide H3K27me3 profiles of wild type, clf and swn seedlings.
The three genotypes share many H3K27me3 target regions but they exhibit partially
distinct methylation profiles. In clf null mutants, H3K27me3 is significantly reduced at
643 genes, indicating that at these genes CLF is the major catalytic component of PRC2.
A part of the CLF dependent genes is significantly physically clustered along chromosomes
and surprisingly, 60% of CLF dependent genes contain a conserved AAACCCTA
or telo box which has been previously reported to enhance transcription. Unexpectedly,
reduction of H3K27me3 in clf mutant plants does not correlate frequently
with an increase of gene expression. The swn mutation can either have the same effect,
oppose or contribute to the effect of clf on the expression of these genes. Moreover, in
swn null mutants, H3K27me3 seems to be slightly increased in 294 genes compared to
wild-type. These results suggest that the interplay between CLF and SWN might be
important to establish wild-type-like H3K27me3 and expression levels. Finally, in swn,
expression of some CLF dependent genes changes dramatically, although H3K27me3
is unaffected. This indicates that SWN might have an H3K27me3 independent function.
In short, these results demonstrate that CLF and SWN have partially distinct effects
on the Arabidopsis thaliana H3K27me3 pattern and that their function is linked to the
underlying genetic code. SWN might control expression in a H3K27me3 independent
pathway and the interplay between CLF and SWN is presumably important to maintain
establish wild-type-like H3K27me3 and expression levels

A minor accident at (well, actually in) the Magrath Fish Pond on Monday, Oct. 28th proved, once again the boys (and girls) in Magrath are always there for you if you need them! Trevor Panczak, Grandpa R., Cameron Anderson, Clayton Anderson, Chad Harris, B.J. Farries, Kurlis Robinson, Tom Fox, Gavin Beck, John Panczak, Aleesa Nelson, Robyn Frenzel, Amy Watson, & Dee Dee Robinson, all helped me, a poor defenceless teenager driver fish my truck out of the pond. They are my heros. I don't think anywhere but in Magrath could there be so many wonderful kids (and grown-ups!).
I think you re all wonderful and I to
thank you guys!!

Lions International Youth Exchange Recipient is Enthusiastic Johanna Fox is a young woman with a wider perspective on the world, thanks to her attendance this summer at an unusual camp held in Waterton Lakes. She was the recipient of a Magrath Lion's Club grant which sponsored her & paid half her registration at the Lions Club International Youth Exchange. She recently reported her experiences.Held at the Canyon Church camp for one week, the event was attended by 15 Canadian teenagers & 14 youth from Germany, Italy, Peru, Japan, Belgium, Netherlands, Turkey, France, Israel. Learning to appreciate the variety of cultures & richness of background of her new friends was the greatest part of the camp.
Besides a wide variety of activities in Waterton itself, workshops were conducted. The Canadian students were instructed daily in leadership to be used later on student councils in their schools. The International group was also taught leadership & perhaps a way to start student councils in their schools. She felt the. goal to train future leaders was well met, she has a large binder bulging with ideas to use in student council & other leadership capacities. A member of this year's student council, she is using many of the ideas she picked up "Kiss The Pig" is soon to be implemented as a fundraiser & some lucky teacher will have the opportunity in the near future as students & teachers scramble to make sure their favorite receives this opportunity.
Johanna is very appreciative of the opportunity she received from the Lions & is encouraging them to sponsor another student council member to attend next year's camp in Kourtney Lake BC. "It s great I have friends m many countries, it's like having part of your family all over the world. I could visit them and feel right at home".

Dear Susan Zobell
You and your helpers are to be complemented
on the great improvement you have contributed
to main Street Magrath, in displaying your
clever ideas with the poster windows, and also
the good looking "Park" sign, the attractive
trim around the windows & the new clean
painting in general of the old Theatre front.
For many years the Theatre building has gone
without the slightest bit of improvement and it
has indeed looked ugly.
How fortunate Magrath is to have citizens
like you, who will step forward and with both
brain & brawn will turn an eye-sore into an
attraction.
Thank you Susan, you and yours are a credit
to our Community, everyone of us need to have
reason to feel proud of our Town.
Sincerely Avilda Coleman.

Spirit of Alberta
Mr. Chatwin and the Spirit of Alberta Band
wish to express sincere thanks to those of our
friends and neighbours living within hearing
range of the school football field. Each day this
September you were the unasked for recipients

serenade as we prepared for our Tour south.
We very much appreciate your graciousness
and patience and apologize for your probable
rude catapult out of dreamland; we hope it
wasn't too inconvenient.
The Spirit of Alberta Band is again doing
their "Band Calendar" fundraiser which is: a
1997 calendar that has on it your birthday, the
birthdays of your children as well as the
birthdays of everyone else in town who orders
one. It also has a coloured picture of the band
on the front. It sells for 5.00 and makes a
great Christmas gift for grandparents, children
and former residents. Band students will be
contacting you.
Also any local businesses who wish to have
and ad on this calendar (who weren't on last
year's) please contact Joanne or Jerry at
Magrath School 758-3366 or Cathy West after
4 pm @ 758-6473. Calendars will be ready in
time for Christmas giving with a new & vastly
improved delivery system.

presented last week by a group of over 1500 scientist
meeting in Washington, states: "Human beings and the
Natural World are on a collison course". The greatest
dangers sited were: ozone depletion, air pollution, waste
of water, poisioning of the ocean, damage to farmland,
deforestation, loss of plant and animal species and
population growth. Industrial countries are the worst
polluters. They informed us that the trend can be
reversed, but must come within the next decade or so. Six
areas for action were suggested.
One area; 11 the more efficient use of energy, water
and other materials", our grade six students at Magrath
School are addressing. The Magrath School has set a goal
to become a "Green School". In an effort to increase
environmental awareness, citizens are invited to recycle
their newspapers through the school.
The PROCEDURE is simple:
1- Use string to bundle your own newspapers.
2- Deliver them personally or send them with any student
willing to help.
3- Stack the bundles outside Mr. Alston's room. Use the
East door of the elementary wing.
The School and the Magrath 3rd Ward Scouts will transport
papers to Lethbridge for recycling. PLEASE help us achieve
this worthwhile goal!!!

TADPOLE HOCHEY (Ages 5-6-7)
Last weekend the Tadpoles travelled to RavEond where they played a very exciting game. It was very close, but they lost 8-5. Magrath Goal Scorers : Doug Mehew-3, Chris Rasmussen-1, Lane Gill-1. ALL the Tadpoles played very well and they are getting better with every game.We will be playing in our Annual Tournament Nov.27th at 5pm and Saturday Nov.28th at8 am. Cone out and see sone really entertaining hockey.
NOVICE HAWKS (Ages 8 4 9) We had a busy Saturday as we travelled to Kainai for a 9:00am league game, and then to Raymond for an exhibition game at 3:15pm. We knew Kainai was going to be a tough game as they have three players who hold their team together. Danny put his forces out and gave it his best shot. Peter Lee faced 45 shots in the net, of which 9 made it past him. Jim Balderson & Chris Chatwin did their best at shadowing, but Kainai kept them contained very well. We did manage to slip two of our eleven shots past the Kainai goalie. The successful shooters were Dustin Handel assisted by Ryan Nishikawa and Del Thompson unassisted.
Our exhibition game was a very close and exciting game. We lead the entire game, but ended up on the short end of a 5-4 score, as Raymond snuck a goal at the 18:46 mark of the third period. Goal Getters for the Hawks: Jim Balderson 2-2; Del Thompson-1; and Janay Chipman-1.
PEE WEE W (Age 12 & 13 ) Better late than never' Season Opener: Oct.31/92 in Fort MacLeod. We came away an 11-3 victory with shots in our favor of 66-23. Goal Getters: Tom Lee-3, Ryan Blpley-2; Gavin Beck-2; Joey SlSSESon-2Matthew Stanford-1;Kurtis Rcbinson-1. Sorry not available. Nov.7/92: We travelled to Coaldale
and again we were victorious. The final score was 11-1. The scales were not very balanced, so running time was played for the entire game. Goal Getters: Hat Trick Henry 3-1; Tommy Lee-2; Ryan Ripley2-1; Joey fsomber-1; Matt Stanford-1; Jason Wood 1-1; Greg Henry 1-1; Gavin BeckO-1.
At 8:00pm we travelled to Lethbridge to play an exhibition game against the Blackhawks. After sixty minutes of play the goal clock said 7-3 in our favor. Goal tending duties were split between Greg Bourne and Ryan Ripleyfan okay debut) Goal Getters: Gavin Beck 3-1; Greg Henry 2-1; Joey Thompson-1; Michael Hegqie-1; Matt Stanford 0-2.

was much closer than the score indicated.
Cardston won the game 20-0. In the first
quarter, a blocked punt was turned into 6pts.
The second Cardston score came late in the half
on a 25yd pass play and the 13-0 score stood up
until 6min left in the contest when Cardston used
the same pass play again to score another
touchdown. It was a highly spirited contest, with
many great defensive plays displayed by the
much improved Magrath team. Cardston

The Habitable Exoplanet Observatory (HabEx) Mission Concept Study Final Report
The Habitable Exoplanet Observatory, or HabEx, has been designed to be the Great Observatory of the 2030s. For the first time in human history, technologies have matured sufficiently to enable an affordable space-based telescope mission capable of discovering and characterizing Earthlike planets orbiting nearby bright sunlike stars in order to search for signs of habitability and biosignatures. Such a mission can also be equipped with instrumentation that will enable broad and exciting general astrophysics and planetary science not possible from current or planned facilities. HabEx is a space telescope with unique imaging and multi-object spectroscopic capabilities at wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to near-IR. These capabilities allow for a broad suite of compelling science that cuts across the entire NASA astrophysics portfolio. HabEx has three primary science goals: (1) Seek out nearby worlds and explore their habitability; (2) Map out nearby planetary systems and understand the diversity of the worlds they contain; (3) Enable new explorations of astrophysical systems from our own solar system to external galaxies by extending our reach in the UV through near-IR. This Great Observatory science will be selected through a competed GO program, and will account for about 50% of the HabEx primary mission. The preferred HabEx architecture is a 4m, monolithic, off-axis telescope that is diffraction-limited at 0.4 microns and is in an L2 orbit. HabEx employs two starlight suppression systems: a coronagraph and a starshade, each with their own dedicated instrument
Executive functions as predictors of ADHD symptomsand behavioral problems in Colombian schoolchildren
Se recomienda la implementación de estrategias de apoyo educativo personalizadas que optimicen el rendimiento académico y la adaptación conductual en estudiantes con TDAH.The present study examined the relationship between executivefunctions (EF) andthe symptomatology of AttentionDeficitHyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as their impacton behavioral problems, in a sample of in a sample of elementary and secondary schoolstudents with ADHD Cartagena, Colombia. A total of 41 children diagnosed with combined-typeADHD participated in the study. They were assessed using the AttentionDeficitHyperactivityDisorder Rating Scale (EDAH), cognitive tests measuring working memory, cognitiveflexibility, andinhibition, and a behavioral evaluation of EF through the Behavior Rating Inventory of ExecutiveFunction – Second Edition (BRIEF-2), completed by their teachers. Multiple linear regressionanalyses were conducted to identify the contribution of EF to ADHD symptoms and behavioralproblems. The results indicated that cognitiveflexibility was a significant predictor of inattention, whereas inhibition and task monitoring were associated with hyperactivity. Furthermore, combinedsymptomatology was explained by cognitiveflexibility and interference control, while behavioralproblems were predicted by emotional control. These findings highlight the role of EF in themanifestation of ADHD and underscore the need for tailored educationalinterventions aimedat enhancing executive skills. The implementation of personalized educational support strategiesis recommended to optimize academic performance and behavioral adaptation in students withADHD.Desarrollo y educació
