Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

In today's social context, the term bullying, compared to years ago, has become a frequently used term. has become a frequently used term, which may have led to a certain superficiality and insensitivity when assessing the facts. insensitivity when assessing the facts. There are also students who are willing to show solidarity and understanding towards their peers in difficulty. Therefore, the study presented here aims to approach it from this more positive point of view and to offer a concrete, albeit modest, contribution to the knowledge of the quality of school relationships and the phenomena of bullying, based on a strategy that we consider innovative, which involves the active collaboration of the so-called "Transgression Group", which participates in Milan and which is made up of specialised professionals, students and people who are in prison. In the second section, we find the fifth, sixth and seventh chapters, where the research plan designed and the results obtained from the intervention are presented and described in detail. Finally, the conclusions and discussion of the thesis are presented. Specifically, the objective of each of the chapters is given below: CHAPTER I. The aim is to examine school coexistence as an educational challenge, making reference to the school as the ideal place to improve it and describing some of the most frequent problems we encounter. CHAPTER II. The aim is to go deeper into bullying, offering a conceptual approach, types, influential effects and the legal profile in the Italian context. CHAPTER III. We focus on some of the main researches developed at international level on bullying, as well as on specific researches carried out in the Italian context. CHAPTER IV. We dwell on intervention initiatives, as well as on some more concrete strategies. CHAPTER V. This chapter deals with the field study. It defines the objectives of the doctoral thesis, as well as the research methodology. It describes the characteristics, objectives and main activities of the Gruppo della Trasgressione. It also describes the specific context of the intervention, the sample that participated in the field study and the data collection instruments. The Trasgressione Project is detailed and the procedure and analysis of the results are explained. CHAPTER VI. This chapter deals with the results of the field study carried out. Firstly, the information collected and analysed from the discussion forums with the adolescents is detailed, explaining each of the categories worked on (freedom, anger, parent-child relationship, dependencies, choices and micro-choices). Subsequently, an analysis of the interviews conducted with inmates and former inmates is carried out through interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) (Smith, 1996). CHAPTER VII. The final conclusions of the Doctoral Thesis are presented, where a review of the most important contributions that have been found through the field study carried out, as well as the limitations and future lines of research are addressed. Reflection on the results will allow us to see how the proposal presented can have an effective and positive influence on the promotion of values and social competences which, in short, can improve interpersonal relationships and prevent bullying. At the same time, active confrontation, reflection, the testimony of one's own experience, the awareness of one's own actions and the consequent assumption of responsibility allow the reconstruction of a citizen who, once out of prison, can really contribute to avoid any maladjusted behaviour and actions in society. While it is true that our intervention only studies a specific context, we are convinced that this research can open up new perspectives of study that can be developed in the future with a view to the implementation of similar projects in different educational contexts. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

    No full text
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

The educational response to high-ability students continues to be an issue for the education system. One of the main barriers of working with these students is the lack of teacher training. The objective of the research is to analyze the initial and continuing teacher training (basic training and professional development courses for teachers) to know if they consider themselves prepared when it comes to offering a quality education to these students. The general hypothesis is that teachers in the Valencian Community do not currently receive sufficient training to provide an adequate education to highability students. Specifically, the objectives set are to analyze the initial and ongoing teacher training in the Valencian Community according to their perceptions, and to determine the relationship between these perceptions and certain sociodemographic variables (age, education level, type of center and time worked). The study was carried out based on a questionnaire prepared "ad hoc," following the usual steps of research based on the survey method. The participating sample in this study is made up of information provided by 1,176 teachers from all education levels. The results of the research not only point to a lack of specific training for teachers in this area, but even teachers who have received training in this area as they report they still feel under-prepared to work with these high-ability students. Variables such as age or time worked seem to have a greater impact than the training received when working with high-ability students. This situation undoubtedly makes it difficult for there to be quality educational interventions for these students
