    Offload decision models and the price of anarchy in mobile cloud application ecosystems

    With the maturity of technologies, such as HTML5 and JavaScript, and with the increasing popularity of cross-platform frameworks, such as Apache Cordova, mobile cloud computing as a new design paradigm of mobile application developments is becoming increasingly more accessible to developers. Following this trend, future on-device mobile application ecosystems will not only comprise a mixture of native and remote applications, but also include multiple hybrid mobile cloud applications. The resource competition in such ecosystems and its impact over the performance of mobile cloud applications has not yet been studied. In this paper, we study this competition from a game theoretical perspective and examine how it affects the behavior of mobile cloud applications. Three offload decision models of cooperative and non-cooperative nature are constructed and their efficiency compared. We present an extension to the classic load balancing game to model the offload behaviors within a non-cooperative environment. Mixed-strategy Nash equilibria are derived for the non-cooperative offload game with complete information, which further quantifies the price of anarchy in such ecosystems. We present simulation results that demonstrate the differences between each decision model’s efficiency. Our modeling approach facilitates further research in the design of the offload decision engines of mobile cloud applications. Our extension to the classic load balancing game broadens its applicability to real-life applications

    Developing an open-source platform for the evaluation of intelligent traffic control algorithms

    Intersection management is a key component of road transport systems. Envisaging a new age of road transport systems accommodating intelligent, connected, and autonomous vehicles, many novel intersection control algorithms have been proposed in the literature. These algorithms are often implemented using bespoke software and tested over custom built network models because of their complexity and the lack of freely accessible software tools. This in turn makes them difficult to evaluate and benchmark.To solve this issue, in this paper, we present the Traffic Control Test Bed project, the objective of which is to develop an open source microsimulation platform for the evaluation of intersection control algorithms. The platform provides a library of road network models together with an intuitive synthetic road network generator for user-defined layouts. It facilitates and streamlines the parallel execution of simulations. Outputs and performance indicators are monitored and visualised by the platform both during runtime and at post processing stage. We demonstrate the usage of the platform with a case study evaluating two simple signal optimisation methods. As well as being an arena for traffic control algorithms, the open source property of the platform also invites contributions from the wider research community to improve execution validity and efficiency of traffic control systems

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Modelling the bandwidth allocation problem in mobile service-oriented networks

    When the services requested by mobile application workflows are distributed over a network of mobile smart devices, the question arises as to which service should be allocated with how much bandwidth and when in order to satisfy service demands? Furthermore, the mobility of smart mobile devices brings forward the challenge to determine how changes in mobile network conditions affect the bandwidth requirements of interacting services. In this paper, we construct a Network I-O model to describe the bandwidth dependencies in mobile service-oriented networks incorporating and extend on the principles of the Leontief Input-Output model in economics. Various factors such as bandwidth and service demand are accounted for in the model. The network I-O model lays the foundation for future objective developments in ubiquitous mobile computing scenarios. Results from simulation studies are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
