Experimental study on wake flows of a live fish with time-resolved tomographic PIV and pressure reconstruction

    No full text
Volumetric measurement for the wake structures generated by a freely swimming zebra fish has been conducted by tomographic particle image velocimetry. The 3D flow visualization is recorded by four high speed cameras. The time-resolved three-dimensional flow structures are obtained and studied. lambda(ci)-criterion is applied to identify vortices induced by zebra fish locomotion, which clearly exhibits the instantaneous structures of three- dimensional vortex rings. Vortex rings are linked at angles and gradually lose coherence as they convect downstream. By investigating the distribution of momentum components and acceleration terms of the Navier-Stokes equations, it is found that vortex rings in the wake have an accelerating effect on the flow. And alternating orientations of vortex rings can result in a change of thrust direction between successive tailbeats. A pressure reconstruction technique is applied, revealing low pressure regions around vortex rings and relatively large pressure gradient at the connecting part of the linked vortex rings. Combined with the kinematic information of the flow field, the dynamic analysis introduced by the acceleration and pressure fields further strengthens the understanding of fish's propulsion mechanism

Integrating High-Resolution Imaging and Water-Sensitive Paper for Enhanced Agricultural Spray Droplet Characterization

    No full text
Water-sensitive papers (WSP) have emerged as a low-cost, field-deployable spray characterization method, posing significant challenges for field deployment. To address the limitations of existing WSP analysis approaches, this work presents a comprehensive methodology for the characterization of agricultural spray droplets using WSP and image processing techniques. This methodology is validated through testing that encompasses a range of scenarios, including varying droplet densities, simulating overlap, and utilizing different resolution cameras for image capture. The results indicate that camera resolution consistently plays a critical role in minimizing measurement errors across different droplet stain types, particularly for single and double stains. Higher resolution cameras (2560x1440) significantly improve the accuracy of coverage and diameter measurements, reducing both MAE and RMSE and yielding higher R2 values, suggesting a better fit. This analysis provides valuable insights for optimizing the setup in environmental and agricultural assessments involving WSP

2-Methoxyestradiol prevents monocyte adhesion to vascular endothelial cells via downregulation of VCAM-1 expression

    No full text
2-Methoxyestradiol (2-ME) reduces atherosclerotic lesion formation. However, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this work, we investigated the effect of 2-ME on monocyte adhesion to vascular endothelial cells. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) greatly increased the attachment of monocyte onto cultured human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs), which was inhibited by 2-ME in a dose- and time-dependent manner, or by the vascular cell adhesion protein-1 (VCAM-1) neutralizing antibody, suggesting that a functional releationship between 2-ME and VCAM-1 may exist. In accordance with this, treatment with 2-ME (10â7â10â5M) for 6â48 h downregulated VCAM-1 protein expression. Meanwhile, the nuclear factor ÎoB (NF-ÎoB) p65 subunit activity and its nuclear translocation was inhibited by 2-ME in HUVECs. The PI3K inhibitor wortmannin or the specific Akt siRNA both inhibited the effects of 2-ME, suggesting that 2-ME inhibited p65 activity via PI3K/Akt signaling. In conclusion, 2-ME inhibits VCAM-1 expression and thus prevents monocyte adhesion to vascular endothelial cells via regulation of PI3K/Akt and NF-ÎoB signaling. These findings will be helpful for better understanding the mechanisms through which 2-ME improves endothelial function

A DF-LCA Modeling and Evaluation Case Study on an Agricultural Pests and Diseases Knowledge Graph Based Q&A System

    No full text
Digitilization footprint (DF) quantifies the cost, time, and data volume of information storage, transmission, and processing in a virtual environment, and is a key indicator for evaluating virtual sustainability. Based on the modeling process and indicator system of DF-LCA, this paper models the automated construction of a knowledge graph question-answering system for agricultural pests and diseases, defines a data processing unit (DPU), and analyzes data flow to evaluate resource consumption during system construction. By monitoring DPU through Grafana, this paper obtains key indicators of the virtual environment, providing a basis for evaluating the virtual sustainability of different construction processes. Compared with the evaluation of individual modules by previous researchers, this paper models the life cycle of the entire data for this process, which not only reveals the contribution of each module of the knowledge graph question-answering system in the virtual environment, but also provides a basis for the study of knowledge graph sustainability. At the same time, it provides a case reference for the application of DF -LCA in the agricultural field. Its modeling and monitoring methods also provide a reference for DF research in other systems

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
