In the circle of the 20th century dystopia. About reading the novel “Otok snova” by Damir Miloš

    No full text
The article is an attempt to show the novel Otok snova (Island of Dreams,1996) by Damir Miloš as an example of a dystopian text. The author portrays the presented world of the book, first, as a postmodern consumer space where the pursuit of attractions is a dominant human activity, second, she presents the same picture through the prism of hyperbolic deformation. In the novel the original idyll takes the contours of hell, as she suggests. However, the reflection does not finish in a defeatist way. The author indicates a possibility of transition from dystopia to micro-utopia, but only in the case of reading the novel in the context of other works written by Damir Miloš

The new book on Diocletian’s Palace brings interesting new readings and interpretations of the Palace and broadens this interpretative substratum with a projective dimension, by posing questions about the possible new interventions and sensible design procedures to be performed in such delicate urban field without compromising its layered integrity. The book consists of four essays by four authors – Sasa Zivkovic, Leslie Lok, Ana Šverko and Damir Gamulin

A Damastion Tetrobol – Fake or Original?

    Get PDF
Autor Damir Kovač godinama skuplja novac Damastija i piše o njemu. The author Damir Kovač has for years collected Damastion coins and written about them. In most cases he acquired numismatic material from various auction houses and at numismatic meetings in Munich, Vienna and elsewhere. More recently, Damastion coins have usually been offered by the well-known American auction house CNG – Classical Numismatic Group, Lancaster, PA (hereinafter: CNG). At one of its renowned auctions the author purchased a tetrobol of the city of Damastion, happy to have enriched his collection with a new coin from that still enigmatic city. However, analysis of that coin by well-known experts raised doubts about the originality of the recently purchased tetrobol. The authors show why they had the tetrobol analysed and cite the analyses results. Based on their own experience, the authors want to caution numismatists to be careful when purchasing numismatic material

Temu "dizajniranja" (muzejskih izložaba) gledamo vrlo široko i otvoreno

M8: The Adriatic Highway: Infrastructure as a Generator of Territory

Infrastructure as a Generator of Territory is an art project that uses visual analysis in order to develop qualitative cartographic methods beyond the exact boundaries of geoinformatic technologies. The role of the Adriatic Highway in the transformations of the previously disconnected and underdeveloped agricultural litoral took place primarily owing to tourism. This has been analyzed by using, for the first time systematically, aerophotogrametric surveys from the period preceding its completiton (1965). The highway has been the organizational and conceptual basis for evaluating this extensive undertaking. The sequence of passage along the Magistral road has structured this space experientially by recombining its components in an entirely different way as compared to the previous itineraries, represented in the schematized late antique Peutingeriana or the idealized continuous panorama of Giuseppe Rieger from 1853. By transforming the original route and displacing the trafic to the future Adriatic-Ionian, motorway the visual reorganization of the literal was continued. By using a procedure similar to the classical methods of contracting video sequences, the Adriatic Highway has likewise been divided into sequences and then further to an arbitrary number of points rendered by the photographic scenes shot from the opposing angles. Rather than showing the continuities, they primarily analyze disruptions and transformations as a sort of comprimated recording that excludes identical data. A series of simple defining features makes it possible to observe the transformation processes, the prevalent uses of land, and the elements of natural or human-made environment. This creates a matrix of data that allows for a recombination of elements, depending on the selected method of classification. Statistical frequency helps overcome the initial arbitrariness and construct cartographic sequences that make it possible to detect intriguing patterns and to view space in a fresh way

Qalandar-name. Chapter 2. “Praise and blessing upon Muhammad Mustafa”

    No full text
The present fragment contains the translated continuation of a medieval poetic text “Qalandar-name” written by the Crimean Sufi author Abu Bakr Qalandar. This fragment contains the second chapter devoted to praising (Salawat) the Prophet Muhammad, after which the poet will glorify his righteous caliphs (al-Khulafa al-rashidun). As it appears from the author’s praises, he was a follower of Sunni Islam and, at the same time, a representative of the Sufi order (tariqa). Titles and names that Abu Bakr Kalandar uses in his chanting of Muhammad, are very familiar both to researchers of the Islamic religion and ordinary Muslims. He calls the Prophet the Lord (Sayyid) of both worlds, Elect, Light, Leader of all the prophets and saints. The author mentions some famous miracles of the Messenger of Allah, such as the night journey (Isra) and ascension to the seventh heaven (Mi’raj), the moon’s splitting and inanimate objects’ speaking. He also makes an allusion to the mystical interpretation of the Qur’an in relation to the hair of the Prophet. The Persian text is translated by Milyausha Ismagilova, a postgraduate student. Translation edition and comments are supplied by Damir Shagaviyev, Head of the Department of History of Public Thought and Islamic Studies of the Sh.Marjani Institute of History, Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan). * Continuation of the article. The smell and colour of words. Attempts at intersemiotic translation and synaesthesia in Damir Miloš’s works "Smetlar" and "Bijeli klaun"

    Get PDF
The aim of the intersemiotic and conceptual prose of Damir Miloš is to overcome the limitations of language and literary description, especially when presenting reality through the prism of sensual experience, both visual and olfactory. In Miloš’s prose the interconnectedness of art forms, often perceived today as a symptom of a literary crisis or a trend towards intermediality, becomes a special and convenient pretext to use intersemiotic translation, visuality and synaesthesia as a means of presenting sensuality in literature. The Croatian author creates a world in which his protagonists, marked with certain incapacities or hypersensitivity of senses (an absolute sense of smell, colour-blindness or blindness), conjure up their own individual and subjective reality. Thus, Miloš stresses the postmodern aspect of the multiplicity of truths and perspectives

Urban Planning Research : Pedagogical Notebook Vol. 2

    No full text
The Second Pedagogical Notebook is a continuation of the first ‘notebook’, dedicated to the Urban Planning Research course. The course and the notebook were created by Prof. Ivana Šverko, with the aim of offering students of architecture in Split the basics of urban planning research in a Mediterranean context. The idea behind the pedagogical notebook is to contribute to the recognition of the research phase as an essential starting point in the entire, complicated process of urban planning and design, as well as an understanding of research methodologies in specific spatial and social conditions. One of the ideal real-world templates for realising this goal is Zrinsko- Frankopanska Street, which developed along one of the Split peninsula’s Roman centuriation lines. This street connects the historical southern city harbour with the newer, northern one. Zrinsko-Frankopanska is an exceptionally important city street, and along its length there are a range of buildings dating from the ancient period to the 21st century, with almost every historical period represented. It is here that the most diverse range of public facilities can be found. The students mapped, studied, and analysed this city street, using historical and morphological analysis of spatial connections, greenery, the relationship between the public and the private, the accessible and inaccessible spaces, purpose, urban equipment, and so on. In doing so, they also noted relevant everyday human activities such as disposing of rubbish, as well as things such as the position and content of graffiti. They also included morphography – the description of forms without reference to their sources and development process – in their analytical approach. After the research phase, the students were instructed to target the problems they detected by proposing improvements to the existing elements, or by redesigning them. They were also required to open up the possibility of alternate uses for the space, up to the point in the design process when an architect or designer would usually take over. By presenting the study of a specific segment in this book, we wish to help students consider the complexity of the urban tissue, define the basic urban elements, research development processes, the typological and morphological characteristics of constriction and, ultimately, to identify everything that constitutes the “urban space as a whole”. We wish to guide them so that with their unique knowledge and tools, and their inclusion of all the other relevant professions in the processes of urban planning, they can become architects with sound professional and ethical principles, and develop into a new generation of responsible city-builders
