What Do Ads Buy? Daily Coverage of Listed Companies on the Italian Press.
No full textWe match data on the daily newspaper coverage of a sample of Italian listed companies with Nielsen data on the monthly amount of advertising that a given company has purchased on a given newspaper. Controlling for newspaper and company fixed effects, we show that newspaper coverage of a given company is positively related with the amount of ads purchased on that newspaper by that company. We also find that coverage of a company is higher the day after a press release, but especially so on newspapers where more ads are purchased. This result on press releases is robust to controlling for ownership links between newspapers and companies, and -more generally- controlling for time invariant features of each company-newspaper pair, i.e. for (company × newspaper) fixed effects.. Moreover, coverage is correlated with past day absolute return and trading volume, and this relationship appears to be steeper for those newspapers where more ads are purchased. .Media Bias, Advertising, Press Releases, Stock Returns, Italian Press
The role of glycosaminoglycans and sulodexide in the treatment of diabetic nephropathy
No full textDiabetic nephropathy occurs in 20-40% of diabetic patients, making it one of the most important causes of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It has a large impact in terms of associated morbidity and mortality for the individual patient and in terms of costs for healthcare. Several studies have demonstrated that micro- and macroalbuminuria predict cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus.Current nephroprotective therapies for diabetic nephropathy include the pursuit of normoglycemia and normotension, and a consensus is emerging that there is a necessity to also achieve as low a level of albuminuria as possible. However, the search for innovative and ancillary approaches to the prevention and treatment of this diabetic complication is warranted since strict metabolic control can be difficult, and sometimes dangerous, to achieve and even diabetic patients responding to ACE inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin II receptor antagonists (angiotensin receptor blockers; ARBs) and metabolic control show progressive renal damage and eventually ESRD. A number of drugs are currently being investigated; glycosaminoglycans are particularly interesting since, in theory, they target the generalized endothelial dysfunction and metabolic defect in matrix and basement membrane synthesis which, according to the Steno hypothesis, are responsible for diabetic nephropathy and macroangiopathy.Treatment with glycosaminoglycans, and with sulodexide in particular, significantly improves albuminuria in type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients with micro- or macroalbuminuria. The albuminuria-lowering effect of sulodexide enhances the effect of ACEI/ARB therapy. Most studies have shown that the effect of sulodexide on albuminuria is sustained, strongly suggesting that favorable chemical and anatomic remodeling is induced by exogenous glycosaminoglycans in renal tisues, as observed in the experimental model
Hydrocracking of long chain linear paraffins
No full textThe hydrocracking reactivity of two model compounds, namely n-C(16)H(34) (n-C16) and n-C(28)H(58) (n-C28), was investigated on a Pt/SiO(2)-Al(2)O(3) catalyst. Conversion and products distribution have been determined under a wide range of operating conditions (i.e. pressure: 20-80 bar; temperature: 270-330 degrees C; weight hourly space velocity: 0.33-1.0 h(-1): H(2)/n-paraffin feeding ratio 0.05-0.15 wt/wt). The latter were changed according to a central composite design. The present paper summarises the results obtained on both the model paraffins, depending on the reaction conditions. A first, simple kinetic elaboration is also presented, based on an ideal PFR model and a first order kinetics. The reaction confirmed to be first order with respect to the n-paraffin. Experimental data showed that for both n-C16 and n-C28 conversion was affected by H(2)/n-paraffin ratio. The change of conversion was explained in terms of vapour liquid equilibrium (VLE), which in turn is affected by the H(2)/n-paraffin ratio, so leading to a different vaporisation degree of reactant. In agreement with the VLE data, the effect of H(2)/n-paraffin on conversion was lower for n-C28. VLE calculations have been carried out to estimate the H(2) partial pressure and degree of vaporisation of the normal paraffin. The reaction order for hydrogen was -1 and -0.5 for n-C16 an n-C28, respectively. However, in the case of n-C16 the data obtained at the lower bound of the pressure range examined displayed an increase of the reaction order. The apparent activation energy was calculated after correction of the contact time taking into account the liquid-vapour equilibrium: similar values have been estimated for n-C16 and n-C28, ca. 32 and 31 kcal/mol, respectively

The results of various synthetic experiments indicate that complexation at the convex side of a free benzene ring is favoured, probably for steric reasons. As compared with the isomer complexed at the convex face (anti), that complexed at the concave one (syn) is less stable. The 1H and 13C NMR spectral data together with the X-ray structures of the two bis- and one tris-complexes account for the lower stability of the syn isomers
