    Angiodysplastic lesions as a cause of colonic bleeding in patients with chronic renal disease: Is there an association?

    Gastrointestinal bleeding due to angiodysplastic lesions of the large bowel is a common problem among patients receiving hemodialysis and may sometimes be life-threatening. Several hypotheses have been advanced in order to explain the increased incidence of these lesions in this cohort of patients, including degenerative, metabolic, circulatory and other systemic factors. In terms of diagnosis, several advances have been made with sophisticated techniques, but endoscopy seems to be the most effective, having a dual role in diagnosis and treatment. Although most bleeds stop spontaneously, conservative treatment may not be enough. Endoscopic treatment, embolization with infusion of vasopressin, surgical resection of the bleeding intestinal segment and hormone administration may be useful therapeutic tools

    Removal of a tunneled cuffed central venous catheter can be challenging and risky. In some cases, the catheter firmly adheres to the surrounding tissues, becoming an integrated part of the vessel wall. We present the case of an adult female hemodialysis (HD) patient with a dysfunctioning HD tunneled cuffed catheter. The catheter removal procedure proved mazy. After several attempts, the catheter was removed together with the peri-catheter fibrin sheath. However, the post-procedure period was uneventful

    Among the Greek scholars who lived during the 19th century in the north-eastern Balkans, and also in Central Europe, and by their work contributed to the spiritual development of the Balkan Slavs, pride of place must be given to Georgios Zachariadis. Unfortunately, however, no detailed monograph on Zachariadis exists. On this account the problems that arise concerning the life and activities of this Greek scholar are still many and varied. In his study the author tries to fill one part of this lacuna. At the beginning of the work the following are examined, on the basis of new historical evidence: the date and place of Georgios Zachariadis’ birth, his studies and tenure as teacher in the Greek school at Zemun, the Serbian school at Šabac, and the Greek school in Vienna. The author continues his study by analyzing the various works of Zachariadis, which are written on Old Church^Slavonic, and the translations this Greek scholar made from Greek into Old Church Slavonic. Finally, the extent of Georgios Zachariadis’ contribution to Slavonic letters is made clear

    In order to reduce aircraft downtimes Condition-Based-Maintenance (CBM) is a topic gaining increased popularity in recent years. However, to apply such maintenance policies reliable health monitoring techniques should be implemented. Two state of the art monitoring techniques, namely Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) and Acoustic Emission (AE) are used to monitor the fatigue behavior of single stiffened composite panels (SSCPs) subjected to variable amplitude compression-compression (C-C) fatigue. Advanced features, called Health indicators (HIs) are extracted from the raw sensor data to monitor the degradation behavior. It is crucial to have robust and reliable HIs that capture the degradation of the structures.     Damage Diagnostics of a Composite Single-Stiffener Panel Under Fatigue Loading Utilizing SHM Data Fusion

    A case study is presented in which the first steps are made towards the development of a structural health monitoring (SHM) data fusion framework. For this purpose, a composite single-stiffener panel is subjected to compression-compression fatigue loading (R = 10). The carbon-epoxy panel contains an artificial disbond of 30 mm, which was created using a Teflon insert during manufacturing and placed between the skin and the stiffener foot. Under the applied fatigue load, the disbond is expected to grow and its propagation is monitored using two SHM techniques, namely acoustic emission (AE) and Rayleigh-scattering based distributed fiber optic strain sensing. Four AE sensors are placed on the skin, thereby allowing for disbond growth detection and localization. On each stiffener foot, fiber optic sensors are surface-bonded to monitor the growth of the disbond under the applied fatigue loading. The distributed strain measurements are used to localize and monitor the disbond growth. The strength of each technique is utilized by fusing the data from the AE sensors and the fiber optic sensors.
