Abstract: Commonplace book, letters, and other documents and items collected by these Mobile and Claiborne, Alabama, families.Scope and Content Note: This collection contains a commonplace book, letters, and other items compiled by the extended Gaillard and Hurtel families of Claiborne and Mobile, Alabama.The commonplace book, written by Alphonse Hurtel, contains images and approximately thirty-five pages of handwritten quotations. Two obituaries are handwritten on pages 220 to 226: a biography of John Hurtel written by members of Mobile's Get-Away Club and an obituary for Thomas Noel.The collection contains approximately twenty letters, all written or received by members of the extended Gaillard and Hurtel families and dated between 1838 and 1885. Frequent correspondents include Thomas Gaillard and his wife Marianne Gendron Palmer and their children Edmund Gaillard and Martha Rebecca Gaillard (referred to as Bec or Becca in the letters). The letters report family news, describe outbreaks of disease, the purchase or rent of new homes, and the birth and death of family members. In one interesting letter addressed to Bec Gaillard, a friend named Mollie outlined her reasons for breaking off her engagement with her fiance and asked for Gaillard's advice.The collection also contains miscellaneous documents and items compiled by family members, including genealogical materials, a typescript biography of Thomas Gaillard, a lock of Catherine Gaillard's hair, and an 1879 abstinence pledge written by Gordon Hurtel.Biographical/Historical Note: Author and historian, Thomas Gaillard was born on April 25, 1793, in St. Stephens Parish, South Carolina. On May 12, 1812, Gaillard married Marianne Gendron Palmer in Pineville, South Carolina. The couple had thirteen children: Thomas Palmer, John, Catherine, Edmund, Charles, Richebourg, Samuel Septimus, Elizabeth Octavia, Harriett Porcher, Franklin, Lydia Henrietta, Marianne Gendron, and Peter James.Their son John married Caroline Rachel Gordon. The couple had eight children: Catherine Marianne, Henrietta Porcher, Thomas, Sara Blakely, William McConnell, Elizabeth Richebourg, John, and Lydia Hamilton.Thomas and Marianne's daughter Catherine married Alphonse Hurtel in 1855. The couple had five children: Octavia Richebourg, Gordon Noel, Odalie Leclaire, Feliz Gage, and Katherine Marianne
Book presentation followed by discussion: "HEP - still an unfeminine profession?" with Mary K Gaillard
In 1981 Mary K Gaillard became the first woman on the physics faculty at the University of California at Berkeley. Her career as a theoretical physicist spanned the period from the inception — in the late 1960s and early 1970s — of what is now known as the Standard Model of particle physics and its experimental confirmation, culminating with the discovery of the Higgs particle in 2012. Her book A Singularly Unfeminine Profession recounts Gaillard's experiences as a woman in a very male-dominated field, while tracing the development of the Standard Model as she witnessed it and participated in it.
Following the book presentation, Prof. Valerie Gibson from the University of Cambridge will comment on her own journey and how it is to be a woman in the world of physics today during a discussion round with P.E.Mary K Gaillard and the audience. The discussion round will be moderated by Geneviève Guinot, the CERN Diversity Programme Leader.

Beauvoisina carinata Kiel & Campbell & Gaillard 2010, sp. nov.
Beauvoisina carinata sp. nov. (Fig 10) 1985 large bivalves, Gaillard et al., pl. 1, fig. 7. 1990 Lucinacea, Rolin et al., figs. 5, 6. 1992 Lucinid bivalve, Gaillard et al., fig. 7a. Diagnosis: As for the genus. Holotype: FSL 286 459, L = 42 mm, H = 34 mm, W = 22 mm; illustrated on Figs. 10A, J. Paratypes: The figured specimens FSL 286 460 – 286 463. Type locality: Seep deposits at Beauvoisin, Drôme, France, 44°18’N, 5°12’E; Late Jurassic, Oxfordian. Material: The type material and numerous additional specimens from the late Jurassic seep carbonates at Beauvoisin, southeastern France, deposited in the FSL. Etymology: For its carinate lunule. Remarks: Beauvoisina carinata is the earliest record of a lucinid from a methane seep. Shells larger than ca. 50 mm are usually crushed. The adductor muscle scars are extremely weak: although several wellpreserved internal molds were available, neither the scars nor the pallial line could be detected (see figs. 10H, I, K, L). In this respect this species resembles a similarly shaped lucinid from the Early Cretaceous (Hauterivian) Crimean methane seep site, which also has very weak muscle attachment scars (Kiel and Peckmann 2008). The Crimean species differs by lacking the elongate nymph of the Beauvoisin species. The hinge of Beauvoisina carinata differs from that of the Late Cretaceous North American Nymphalucina occidentalis Morton, 1842 by its much narrower nymph; further, N. occidentalis has a small cardinal tooth pointing posteriorly, that is lacking in Beauvoisina carinata (Speden 1970). The large, mid-Cretaceous lucinid Ezolucina inflata (Kanie and Nishida, 2000) has a much higher umbo than B. carinata and a more angular shape, resembling that of vesicomyids rather than oval shape of B. carinata (see Amano et al. 2008). Another large, seep-related lucinid with late Mesozoic members is Nipponothracia, which differs from B. carinata by its edentulous hinge (Kanie and Sakai 1997; Kiel et al. 2008). Along with the tall gastropod that we describe as Humptulipsia macsotayi herein, Thieuloy (1972) reported a large bivalve from the early Cretaceous seeps at Rottier, southeastern France. This bivalve was identified (but not figured) by Macsotay (1980) as the lucinid Pseudomiltha aff. germani. The published figures of this species are insufficient for identification and our own sampling at this site revealed only fragmentary material.
