    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Defesa : Curitiba, 13/04/2018Inclui referências: p. 146-153Resumo: O constante crescimento da população, somado ao incremento do padrão de vida, tem como consequência um aumento significativo da produção de resíduos. No caso da construção de estradas, grandes quantidades de recursos naturais são utilizadas ao mesmo tempo em que grandes quantidades de resíduos também são geradas. Esse contrassenso reflete, de maneira evidente, a necessidade da busca constante por metodologias e processos de reciclagem dos materiais utilizados na construção civil, sobretudo aqueles consumidos pela indústria da pavimentação asfáltica. Neste sentido, a presente pesquisa tem o objetivo de avaliar o desempenho das misturas asfálticas mornas confeccionadas com o emprego dos dois resíduos, revestimento asfáltico fresado e agregado de resíduo de concreto, além da verificação da influência da incorporação dos mesmos, nas frações graúda e miúda da granulometria, nos parâmetros de módulo de resiliência, vida de fadiga, deformação permanente e dano por umidade induzida das misturas asfálticas. Foram produzidas cinco misturas com incorporação dos resíduos, em diferentes frações granulométricas (graúda e/ou miúda). O tipo de ligante asfáltico, a faixa granulométrica escolhida e o aditivo surfactante para produção de misturas mornas, foram mantidos constantes. A variável de controle do estudo é a fração em que cada resíduo foi incorporado, ora graúda, ora miúda ou ambas. Os resultados obtidos indicam que há influência tanto do tipo de resíduo incorporado quanto da fração em que o mesmo é disposto, no desempenho das misturas. O aumento do teor ótimo de ligante asfáltico das misturas é diretamente proporcional à quantidade e ao tamanho do agregado de resíduo de concreto incorporado. Ainda, o ligante asfáltico é o componente que exerce maior influência no módulo de resiliência das misturas. O dano por umidade induzida das misturas estudadas foi satisfatório, ficando dentro dos limites aceitáveis. Quanto à deformação permanente, as misturas com menor teor de ligante foram as que obtiveram melhor desempenho, com destaque para a mistura com incorporação de agregado de resíduo de concreto na fração graúda e revestimento asfáltico fresado na fração miúda, que alcançou resultados próximos aos da mistura de referência, atendendo ao limite aceitável de afundamento para rodovias de baixo volume de tráfego. A vida de fadiga das misturas com incorporação de resíduos, independente do tipo e da fração, apresentaram desempenho superior se comparadas com a mistura de referência. A mistura com incorporação de agregado de resíduo de concreto na fração graúda e revestimento asfáltico fresado na fração miúda foi a que, a partir do dimensionamento de uma estrutura hipotética, resistiria a um número de ciclos de carregamento maior. De forma geral, os resultados obtidos pela presente pesquisa corroboram a hipótese de que é possível produzir misturas recicladas mornas com desempenho satisfatório, sendo que a composição conjunta dos dois resíduos, tanto na fração graúda quanto na miúda, apresenta desempenho superior em comparação as misturas compostas por 100% de cada um dos resíduos isoladamente. Essas misturas se apresentam como uma alternativa econômica, ambiental e tecnicamente viável para pavimentação, principalmente para vias de baixo volume de tráfego. Palavras-chave: Misturas asfálticas recicladas, revestimento asfáltico fresado, agregado de resíduo de concreto, fadiga, deformação permanente.Abstract: The population and its standard of living has been growing exponentially, with the consequence of a significant increase in the production of waste. The pavement industry consumes many natural resources and generates large amounts of waste. This contradiction reflects, of eleven evident, the demand of the specific method and manufacturing processes to recycle as many as possible all the materials used by the civil construction industry; specially those consumed by asphalt paving. In this sense, the present research has the objective of evaluating the asphalt mixtures made with the use of the two types of waste, reclaimed asphalt pavement and recycled concrete aggregate. Moreover, it aims to verify the influence of the same residues, in the course or fine fractions of the gradation, in the resilient modulus, fatigue, rutting and water susceptibility of the asphalt mixtures. Five mixtures were produced with said wastes in different fractions of gradation (fine and/or course). The type of asphalt binder, the gradation and the surfactant additive for the production of warm mixtures, were keep constant. The control variable is the fraction in which it has been increasingly incorporated, sometimes course, sometimes fine, or both. The results obtained indicate that there is influence of both the type of incorporated waste and the fraction in which it is disposed. The increase of the optimum binder content is directly relatedto the amount and size of the incorporated recycled concrete aggregate. In addition, the asphalt binder is the component that exerts greater influence on the resilient modulus of the mixtures. The water susceptibility of the mixtures studied was satisfactory, within acceptable limits. As for the rutting, the mixtures with the low binder content were the ones that obtained better performance, especially the mixture with incorporation of recycled concrete aggregate in course and reclaimed asphalt pavement in fine, which obtained results close to the reference mixture, within acceptable limits of rutting for low traffic highways.The fatigue life of mixtures incorporating wastes, regardless of type and gradation, presented superior performance when compared to the reference mixture. The mixture with incorporation of recycled concrete aggregate in course and reclaimed asphalt pavement in fine was the one that, from the design of a hypothetical structure, would withstand a greater number of loading cycles.In general, the results obtained by the present research corroborate the hypothesis that it is possible to produce warm recycled mixtures with satisfactory performance, and the combined composition of the two residues, in both the course and fine gradation, presents a superior performance in compared to mixtures composed of 100% of each of the residues alone.These mixtures are presented as an economical, environmentally and technically feasible alternative for paving, especially for low traffic roads.
