    Comparison of usage of indocyanine green, 5-aminolevulinic acid, methylene blue and fluorescein sodium in oncology in human and veterinary medicine

    Diplomarbeit - Veterinärmedizinische Universität Wien - 2024Diese Diplomarbeit untersucht die Anwendung von fluoreszierenden Farbstoffen – Indocyaningrün, 5-Aminolevulinsäure, Methylenblau und Fluoreszein-Natrium – in der Onkologie der Veterinärmedizin der letzten zehn Jahre und vergleicht die Ergebnisse mit dem aktuellen Stand der Humanmedizin. Die Farbstoffe ermöglichen eine verbesserte Darstellung von Tumorgewebe, was die Erkennung von Tumoren, Tumorrändern, Metastasen und Lymphknoten während chirurgischer Eingriffe erleichtert. Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt auf der Nutzung dieser Farbstoffe bei Hunden und Katzen und vergleicht die erlangten Ergebnisse mit aktuellen Studien der Humanmedizin. Eine systematische Literaturrecherche von 2014 bis 2024 zeigt, dass diese Farbstoffe in der Humanmedizin bereits umfassend verwendet werden, während ihr Einsatz in der Veterinärmedizin bisher nur begrenzt untersucht wurde. Indocyaningrün und Methylenblau zeigen in der Veterinärmedizin großes Potential, etwa bei der Färbung von Lymphknoten und der Abgrenzung von Tumorrändern, jedoch kommt es besonders bei der Verwendung von Indocyaningrün häufig zu falsch positiven Ergebnissen. 5-Aminolevulinsäure ist durch seine höhere Tumorspezifität vielversprechend, die bisherigen Studien umfassen jedoch nur sehr kleine Stichproben. Die aktuelle Forschungslage zu Fluoreszin-Natrium in der veterinärmedizinischen Onkologie ist stark begrenzt. Die Anzahl an Berichten von unerwünschten Nebenwirkungen im Zusammenhang mit der Verwendung der Farbstoffe bei Hund und Katze ist gering. Die Arbeit identifiziert Herausforderungen wie falsch-positive Ergebnisse aufgrund von Entzündungen und sehr kleine Versuchsgruppen, und zeigt den dringenden Bedarf an weiteren Studien, um die Techniken für den Einsatz in der Veterinärmedizin zu optimieren. Insgesamt zeigen die Ergebnisse, dass der Einsatz von Fluorophoren die chirurgischen Ergebnisse in der Onkologie der Tiermedizin verbessern und die Rezidivraten von Tumoren verringern kann. Fluorescent dyes play a crucial role in enhancing the visualization of neoplastic tissues, aiding in the precise detection of tumors, tumor margins, metastases and lymph nodes during surgical procedures. This thesis focuses on the application of the fluorophores in dogs and cats, comparing the findings with recent studies from human medicine. A systematic review of literature from 2014 to 2024 revealed that while all four dyes are already utilized in human oncology, their application in veterinary medicine remains underexplored. Indocyanine green and methylene blue show the most promise for sentinel lymph node mapping and tumor margin delineation, nevertheless, false positive results are commonly observed with the use of indocyanine green. 5-aminolevulinic acid is notable for its greater tumor specificity, however, the existing studies are limited by small sample sizes. The current research situation on fluorescein sodium in veterinary oncology is very limited as well. The number of reported adverse effects associated with the fluorophores in dogs and cats was low. The study identifies challenges such as false-positive results due to inflammation and very small sample sizes, highlighting the urgent need for further research to optimize these techniques for the clinical use in veterinary medicine. Overall, the findings suggest that the use of fluorophores can improve surgical outcomes in veterinary oncology and reduce tumor recurrence rates. However, additional research is needed to further validate the clinical applicability and safety of these methods in dogs and cats

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Diplomarbeit - Veterinärmedizinische Universität Wien - 2024Die in der Literatur beschriebene Anatomie des Pankreas und der Milz bezüglich Blutgefäßversorgung bei Hund und Katze wird in dieser Arbeit erneut aufgegriffen und mit der vorherrschenden Anatomie bei Sektionen von sechs Hunden und sechs Katzen verglichen. Ziel ist es dabei, individuelle Abweichungen aufzuzeigen beziehungsweise die vorliegende Literatur inklusive Illustrationen zu ergänzen. Dies soll dazu dienen, zukünftige chirurgische Eingriffe im cranialen Quadranten des kaninen und felinen Abdomens, wie eine partielle Pankreatektomie oder eine Splenektomie, besser planen zu können und auf etwaige Individualitäten gefasst zu sein. Um dies zu erreichen, wurden im Vorfeld sechs Hunde und sechs Katzen unabhängig von Größe, Geschlecht, Alter und Todesursache mittels einer Laparotomie in der Region des Pankreas und der Milz genau untersucht. Es wurden die zwei Organe sorgfältig freipräpariert und deren Blutgefäße identifiziert und freigelegt. In der Folge wurden die Gefäße genau verfolgt und mit der Literatur verglichen. Nach vollständiger Präparation wurden die Ergebnisse in Form einer Checkliste dokumentiert und die anatomischen Strukturen fotographisch festgehalten. Besonderer Wert wurde auf die Form des Pankreas bei Katzen, auf die Aufzweigung der A.lienalis in einen dorsalen und ventralen Ast, sowie auf die Anzahl der Aa.gastroepiploicae sinistrae sowohl bei felinen als auch kaninen Kadavern gelegt. Während der Sektionen wurden Abweichungen von der Literatur vorgefunden. Dies ist vor allem auf individuelle Unterschiede zurückzuführen, da es auch innerhalb der Stichprobe Varietäten gab. Es zeigte sich der Lobus pancreatis dexter der Katzen zum Teil zirkulär anstatt hakenförmig laut Angelou et al. (2023). Die Aufzweigung der A.lienalis in einen dorsalen und ventralen Ast erfolgte durchaus mehr als 1 cm von der Milz entfernt (Langley-Hobbs et al. 2014). Zudem wurden im Gegensatz zu der Beschreibung von Nickel et al. (2004) im Durchschnitt zwei Aa.gastroepiploicae sinistrae sowohl bei Hunden als auch Katzen anstelle von nur einer vorgefunden. Diese Ergebnisse werden mit Hilfe von Fotographien in dieser Arbeit genau aufgezeigtDiploma thesis - University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna - 2024The anatomy of the pancreas and spleen concerning blood supply in dogs and cats, as described in the literature, is revisited in this study and compared with the prevailing anatomy observed in dissections of six dogs and six cats. The aim of this thesis is to highlight individual variations and complement the existing literature, including illustrations. This is intended to better plan future surgical procedures in the cranial quadrant of the canine and feline abdomen, such as partial pancreatectomy or splenectomy, and to be prepared for possible individual variations. To achieve this, six dogs and six cats were thoroughly examined through a laparotomy in the region of the pancreas and spleen, regardless of their size, gender, age and cause of death. The two organs were carefully dissected, and their blood vessels were identified and isolated. Subsequently, the vessels were meticulously traced and compared with the literature. After complete dissection, the results were documented in the form of a checklist, and the anatomical structures were photographed. Special emphasis was placed on the shape of the pancreas in cats, the branching of the A.lienalis into dorsal and ventral parts, and the number of Aa.gastroepiploicae sinistrae in both feline and canine cadavers. During the dissections, deviations from the literature were found. This is primarily due to individual differences, as there were also variations within the sample. The right pancreatic lobe of the cats was partially circular instead of hook-shaped according to Angelou et al. (2023). The branching of the A.lienalis into dorsal and ventral parts occurred more than 1 cm away from the spleen (Langley-Hobbs et al. 2014). Additionally, contrary to the description by Nickel et al. (2004), an average of two Aa.gastroepiploicae sinistrae were found in both dogs and cats instead of just one. These results are precisely illustrated with photographs in this study

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Reading man flap in four dogs: a case series

    Abstract Background The reading man flap is a novel technique in human medicine for the closure of cutaneous circular defects. To the best of our knowledge, no recent clinical studies have described this procedure in small animals. Case presentation In this case series, we present four dogs in which neoplasms were reconstructed using the reading man procedure, which is a double-advancement transposition subdermal flap. The reading man flap was applied in wound revision after surgical removal of a neoplasm in two dogs and in the closure following the excision of a neoplasm in another two dogs. Successful tension-free closure of the lesion site was achieved in all four patients. The postoperative period was uneventful in all patients, and there was no flap necrosis or surgical site infection, although surgical site infection preceded in two cases. Minor complications included partial suture dehiscence in one dog and seroma formation in two dogs. Only one dog required a second anesthesia to insert an active drainage system. The follow-up examination of all four dogs revealed no further complications with the reading man flap at time of the latest wound reevaluation conducted by the surgeon. Conclusion The reading man flap is a well-vascularized fasciocutaneous flap that provides tension-free closure owing to its asymmetrical Z-plasty. It is a simple-to-use option for the closure of circular skin lesions in dogs

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
